Has anyone heard any updates on Kopech? Six weeks is next week, I believe. He's tweeting (About the Odor/Bautista) How ironic

I don't like that update one bit. EVERYONE else who has written/recorded anything (blogs, tweets, chat rooms, talk shows, articles) regarding this doesn't feel he was trying to injure Odor. Why is Kopech getting caught up in this mess. That's two character strikes for me. One more and he gets the label hothead (at least).

Good news. If he's able to tweet that's a good sign his hand is healed.

Yeah, not a good look for Kopech. Did he do anything WRONG? Nah. Just have the self-awareness to shut up about it.
Really comes off like he has no idea what he's getting into.

For one thing, Kopech has a point and he's certainly not the only one saying it (audio link), and for another, the entire baseball world was tweeting about this thing. I don't think this is a big deal or really any kind of deal.

But why a guy with a recent problematic history in such a case feels the need to make a statement about it is well beyond me...

It was clearly an illegal slide & Joey knew it was going to be. The fact that he ended up in left field confirmed that. Then took that one step towards Odor & it was over. Although we may not agree with Kopech, he has his right to his opinion.

Fortunately the fair Mr. Schilling has proven quite conclusively there is zero correlation between being good at pitching a baseball and knowing when to shut up.

But why a guy with a recent problematic history in such a case feels the need to make a statement about it is well beyond me... Well said Colongered. From this view, Kopech's trying to say punching is not a big deal (perhaps to make his own situation look better). If he hasn't learned from his mistake, that bothers me. He could have qualified his statement a million ways by noting he wasn't condoning punching, or toning down the language about "losing respect" for two guys who are far better players than he is (and may ever be) and who might easily someday be his teammates. I'm not OKing what Bautista did, though I'm not even sure the whole fight is that big a deal; it escalated quickly from both sides, and a lot of small actions from a couple different people -- bat flip, mouthing off, drilling, mouthing off, illegal slide, mouthing off, step, shove, boxing stance -- led to the punch. They deserved a suspension, and got it (and we can argue about the exact lengths, but I think they're pretty close) but I haven't lost respect for either player. It's just a really bad look for a player out/injured from punching a guy to defend punching a guy. It's bad enough to live in a glass shack and throw rocks at mansions that he hopes to someday be neighbors with, but to live in one that already has a broken pane... he should know better. (How's that for a stretched metaphor?)

Did he take a step towards Odor, maybe, but again that happens a lot (mostly on hit by pitches), doesn't warrant a suspension. Never even got a swing in thanks to Beltre.

Kopech's comment reminds me of something a Muslim gentleman told me years ago in an interview. He had lost his son a few months earlier in a controversial police shooting and in explaining why he hadn't done any previous interviews he said he always believed in this Muslim ideal: Don't speak unless it improves the silence.
That has always stuck with me because it's such great, practical advice for all of us (especially Curt Schilling and certain prolific game-thread posters!)
Kopech gained nothing by mouthing off on this and succeeded in making himself look even more foolish than he did before. He should keep his mouth shut and work on the immaturity that got him into his present embarrassing situation.

Disappointing, I saw there were posts in this thread and thought there was actual baseball news. Oh well.

Not that we're particularly good at listenening to our own advice.

I get what people are saying, I just find it odd that people login to a message board to say athletes shouldn't share their opinion on things.

I think they should try to include Kopech in a deal if they are trying to improve the major league roster. These are the kind of antics that never really seem to go away and always end up just being way too much of a distraction and not really worth keeping around.

....yeah I think it was just a kid tweeting about a play that literally the entire baseball community was buzzing about. Don't know why people want to make it more than that.

Agree with you on the standard that athletes are held to being a little ridiculous sometimes. My post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, sometimes that doesn't come through.

Everyone was talking about the punch, at work even the non sports fans were talking about it. I have zero issue with Kopech here.
I just wish we'd get some on field updates.

I hate when people treat professional athletes like Little kids. "He didnt learn his lesson", give me a break, he can think its "cool" to hit someone in The face all he wants, he just needs to control himself and understand he CANT do it, as he's jeopardizing his career by doing so.

You gonna catch a Drive game this week? I've been going to Hickory this week I wanted to go to the Espinoza vs Peter Lambert game yesterday in Asheville but I couldn't get out of work. Thanks for the update radiohix. Where does everyone think he's going Greenville or Salem? I think he's ready for Salem, he did pretty well in Greenville last yr

Maybe they can feed off each other.
