If the front office thinks Hanley can play first going forward I wonder if the next move is Panda for Kemp.

If the front office thinks Hanley can play first going forward I wonder if the next move is Panda for Kemp. Doubt it. Hanley Ramirez is a DH at this point. Its not about competence in the field so much as it about his health. Having 160 games of Ramirez at DH and someone else at first base makes more sense than 100-120 games of Ramirez at 1B and 160 games of Kemp at DH.

If someone a year ago were to say that Opening Day 2016 would bring us Hanley starting at 1B and Shaw at 3B...

Shaw's defense immediately becomes a big X factor for this team. If he's an average or better defender at 3B, he could be this year's Matt Duffy, an infielder that comes out of nowhere and becomes a very valuable player. I like Shaw's bat, but it's unquestionably more valuable at the hot corner. Good luck Shaw!
Also, I hope Sandoval takes this as motivation and can produce when given the chance. Ideally he plays his way into salary dump range.

Hallelujah.
Now we don't have to wait until June for them to make changes when they're in last place. I'm now taking numbers to argue with anyone about projections or regression or trying to salvage Sandoval's value. This is a year to win, not maximize asset values and maintain depth by keeping better players in the minors.

Lovullo is in waiting making a lot of money, and Farrell could be gone if he doesn't win now. If Sandoval will further jeopardize that, bench him.

That's possible, but I would bet he's getting advice from above.

We're now one step closer to achieving the All-Travis corner infield.

I'll also assume that most of this decision is based on how terrible Pablo looked in the field again while Shaw has looked at least average.

At some point, you just have to try and go ahead and play the better players. Contracts, regression and whatever else be damned. I'm not a Farrell fan, but you really can't say he's not trying to win. Which is really all a fan can ask.

We're now one step closer to achieving the All-Travis corner infield. Shaw being the next Donaldson and Travis being the next Goldschmidt would make for one hell of an infieldI can't recall the last time I saw someone who only plays 3B being a bench player. But I do have to call myself out for this previous comment. Pablo is not losing his job before opening day. Shame on me.

If fielding is the main reason for the decision, I'm not sure how Sandoval is going to regain any range without losing a bunch of weight. So his time on the bench will probably be determined by how Shaw is doing and whether they can trade him.

I would've bet my life this wouldn't happen with Farrell calling the shots. Same here, so I have to conclude that he isn't. As I wrote in the other thread, this is probably the result of a team meeting, and by team I mean one that includes Dombrowski and the rest of the on-field and off-field staff. My impression is that it may be how it works now. So no, I'll bet he's not calling all the shots. A management team likely made that decision.

Congrats Shaw think it was the right move. Now I would love to see Sox send Sandoval to minors to make a statement and have him play everyday to try and get him in playing shape.

He can't be sent to the minors unfortunately because he has too much service time. Well, they could try, but he could refuse.

If fielding is the main reason for the decision, I'm not sure how Sandoval is going to regain any range without losing a bunch of weight. So his time on the bench will probably be determined by how Shaw is doing and whether they can trade him. If the issue is Sandoval coming into camp out of shape and being unable to adequately field his position, there's a chance that this demotion pisses him off enough that he spends the first couple months of the season getting into shape and takes back his starting spot by mid-season. I also think Sandoval will get more playing time than the typical backup 3B. Any time Ramirez or Ortiz need a day off or get hurt (or, in Ramirez's case, if his positive early defensive showings don't carry over), Shaw probably slides over and Sandoval starts at 3B.

Sandoval didn't sound too pissed off judging by his comments.

With how they have been talking about Sam Travis, that may not be true for long (if Hanley or Papi went on DL anyway).

Sandoval didn't sound too pissed off judging by his comments. Eh, this is a little unfair. What else is he supposed to say? If he sounds really pissed off about it, everyone is going to rip him for being selfish, not a team player, etc.
