I guess this is okay so Blake can get consistent ABs and work on blocking.
Congrats to MH.

I hope Blake is back shortly. Sox are really going all in on Vazquez it seems

What's the point in having both Rutledge and Hernandez on the roster?

Huh. Very interesting that Marco got the call instead of Deven Marrero. 1) Marrero has worked at 3B and 2B in games often, and seems like the more "utility" of the two. 2) Hernandez is still 23 and one would not expect him to be MLB ready like Marrero. Why use one of Hernandez's options? 3) Hernandez is a LHH. All else equal, don't we need another RHH?
EDIT: I just don't see why you wouldn't bring up Marrero and give him a shot to earn some playing time. The Sox brain trust must think Hernandez is ready for the big show to some degree I'd think, to justify bringing him up instead of Marrero. Why?

I imagine the logic is that Rutledge can back up 2B and 3B and is a RHH, so having Hernandez's LHH bat is more useful. Because he's on the 40-man already, this is an option year for Hernandez already, so calling him up has no negative implications there (if anything, it might save him an option year if he sticks on the MLB roster for most of the rest of the season).

What's the point in having both Rutledge and Hernandez on the roster? The only thing I can think of is that Holt can now be a full-time outfielder, with Rutledge backing up 2B/3B and Hernandez backing up SS. But that seems a waste of Holt's versatility. I think Castillo would be a better use of Rutledge's roster spot, but I guess they want him playing full-time in AAA.

Thanks. I didn't realize he was on the 40-man. To what extent do you think this is a vote of confidence in Hernandez? He seemed ahead of schedule, I just wasn't expecting to see him up in April.

That's terrible. What a blow to the development of one of your foundational players. Terribly orchestrated by Dombrowski all around.

Well this is disappointing. It is disappointing. But Blake has been really awful behind the plate. If AAA is the best place for him to work on that? So be it. Not specifically calling you out but I do think its worth noting that too often, fans attribute any failure that players encounter to bad development. Some guys flop or don't reach their ceiling and it has nothing to do with the team handling them wrong. They just aren't all superstars. Maybe Blake can't handle catching.

It's an aggressive promotion for Hernandez, but it's unclear how long he's going to stay up or how often he'll play, and I don't know that this roster move tells us all that much about what they think about him.

Only 4 OF now? Get ready for more Young versus righties... You know who'd be a good option right now? David Murphy

Yeah, its definitely Dombrowski's fault that Swihart's defense is currently below average at the MLB level. Interestingly, however, this would seem to go against Dombrowski's recent comments in Speier's newsletter where he said it takes at least a month of games to evaluate the MLB club. Unless they evaluated Vazquez as better the entire time and wanted to give him buffer time for recovery, which is possible. Shouldn't be a big deal in the long-run. Just gives Swihart some time to hone his receiving skills every day, then flip Hanigan for the largest possible return as demand increases closer to the trade deadline. I think this is a fine move.

Christian Vazquez can get Porcello's sinker to drop again, right? Like he'll go out to the mound and stand behind Porcello and guide his delivery like some dude in a romcom teaches a girl how to play pool, right?

Oh CV! I missed your art so much! Finally, we got a real catcher behind the plate.

If CV was behind the plate, those Tazawa's 2 pitchs down in the zone in the Napoli AB in 2-2 count would've been called a strike and we have a different ball game! He's a game changer!

According to Ian Cundall, CV's arm is not back to its previous standard but this is not a concern due to his superior receiving skills right?

Here's what I thought when I saw the Hernandez move: 6th inning, Lefty comes in to face Shaw. Farrell substitutes Young for Shaw, Holt to 3rd. 8th inning, Righty comes in to face Young, Hernandez in, Holt back to LF. 11th inning, Lefty comes in to face Hernandez, Rutledge in. That's about as far as I could understand this, which is to say, hardly at all. Unless someone is hurt and we've not yet been informed.

Then again, Dombrowski fired a manager after 6 games one year.

Regardless of how Marco performs in this stint in Boston, the Red Sox still wins that trade.

I'm just looking forward to watching CV pop up and point his glove at the pitcher, called third strike in the mitt and fire raging in his eyes. The kid oozes leadership.

I'm on board with this. I listened to Bradfords podcast with Alex Cora and he said it's obvious Swihart isn't ready defensively yet. Long term that's still a tough call on which direction to go. With our inability to develop pitchers maybe we need Vazquez back there and package Swihart for a solid 2. One things for certain I'm glad it's not my call and I would hate for them to take him from behind the plate.
