Hopefully a token "checking in" type of interest. Given the current composition of the team, better to go with one of the 3 closers already on the roster than deal talent for a 4th, regardless of how talented he may be.

Yah, my BS alert is sounding. BP is the LEAST of our worries, and we would give up a young pitcher?

Given the current composition of the team, better to go with one of the 3 closers already on the roster than deal talent for a 4th, regardless of how talented he may be. Bailey, Melancon, Aceves, if those are the 3 you're referencing, do not suffice in my mind as shut-down closers. Tazawa could end up being the best of the bunch, and that is far from a sure thing. And Bard, well, again he is no certainty to even return to where he was before. Foulke was a critical piece in '04, Papelbon in '07. I realize we are not one pitcher away from a title right now, but having a chapionship caliber guy at the back end would do a lot for the psyche of a team that needs to re-build a winning culture. EDIT: I would be comfortable with it in so much as the package is reasonable, of course. One of Bailey/Melancon/Aceves would go I'm sure, plus some quality 40-man pieces like Stolmy and/or Britton. Count me out if De La Rosa, Webster or Barnes are part of it.

People are funny.
They want talent, good talent, but don't want to give up anything for said talent. Don't want to overpay talent. Certainly don't want older talent. But wouldn't mind older talent if they were really good.
Can't make up their mind. BC is out there, stockpiling talent. I love it.

also. If salty is traded with arms, then this makes a little more sense

I think Aceves along with a relief arm and a decent pitching prospect would be a pretty good package for them.

The Pirates just signed Russell Martin-- would they be interested in Saltalamacchia?
I agree with the above. Cherington's going to trade a "young [starting] pitcher" for a one-year rental of a good but not great right-handed reliever? I just don't buy it. Between Uehara, Tazawa, Bailey, Melancon, Bard, Aceves, etc., right-handed reliever is just about the last thing the Red Sox need.

This particular talent is a closer who'd be here for a year, and honestly, I'd be leery about him - I don't particularly care for closers with high walk rates. I don't like heart attack closers. He also gave up his share of homers last year. I don't always subscribe necessarily to FIP but it does indicate that he was nowhere near as good as his ERA would suggest. And like I said - I really hate ninth inning walks.

I think I agree with 0407. If its for Aceves and maybe a spare part or so I'm fine though. Maybe put Jones in too and I wouldn't be upset losing Britton or Workman. Maybe hanrahan regains his 2011 form and could be attractive come July 31st if we aren't in the WC hunt.

If not Aceves I could see the Pirates wanting Morales - they're looking for a starter, correct (honestly I'd prefer to keep Morales)? And yes, Jones would fit the Sox, too. I would hope the Sox wouldn't deal De La Rosa, Barnes, or Webster. If they do make the deal, I would assume that Bailey would be gone? As bad as Bailey was last year and as injury prone as he is, I'm not sure that Hanrahan would really be an upgrade.

This move really would not make sense to me. The team should be looking at starters not bullpen help.

Cherington and Neal Huntington are tight from their days with the Indians. I highly doubt there was much to this.
Seriously, who HAVEN'T the Red Sox "checked in on" this offseason? They're literally kicking the tires on everyone, as they should be. I'll give this more credence if we hear things actually are progressing.

If we trade Franklin Morales for Hanrahan, I might have to go back to huffing glue.

I agree closer is like 6th on the list.

Rather sign Brian Wilson than give up anything in a trade

Well, son of a B...............Fletch lives!!!!! Do not want to trade Morales. He was arguably our best starting pitcher last year. We need arms like his even tho he is a 5-6 inning guy. Strong-armed LH pitching talent is at a premium.

The Red Sox are said to be competing with the Dodgers for Hanrahan. The Pirates are looking for a starting pitcher, and the Sox would possibly give up Franklin Morales or Alfredo Aceves. The Pirates may be thinking more along the lines of Felix Doubront, which would be a deal-breaker, according to the major league source. - Nick Cafardo

I wouldn't trade Morales , let alone Doubront for Hanrahan. Second division closers coming from the NL to the AL seem to be poor bets to continue high levels of performance.
I'd trade Aceves and a C+, B- minor leaguer. And even pay Aceves freight.

Isn't that correct? I like him but don't love him.
