Does anyone here have any idea what the "makeup" concerns are? Is he just an immature kid or something worse?

As long as it is not public, I don't think we want to be breaking this kind of news (or speculating about it) on a public message board. It was significant enough to drop him to 12 but not significant enough to drop him past 12. He'll come in with a clean sheet, although it will be interesting to see if there is a recoupment clause in his pro contract, if and when he signs.

From what I've read about his family, it's not exactly a Jonny Manziel situation where they bought him out of every bit of trouble he was ever in.

Groome did an interview with a local site right after the pick here are some highlights... "It’s a crazy feeling hearing name called, especially by Red Sox,” Groome said. “My family had no idea it was coming when it did. It’s just a dream come true.” Groome watched the draft with family and friend’s at a relative’s house and said he had no inclination that the Red Sox were about to select him. “I had no clue,” Groome said. “They said my name, I was texting a friend back at my cousin’s house and all of a sudden I hear my name. It was such an awesome experience.” “(Draft day) came so quick,” Groome said. “I couldn’t fall asleep. I probably fell asleep at four in the morning, I was so pumped. I can’t wait to get started.” Groome is still 17 years-old and will not turn 18 until late August. Groome will have until mid-August to sign a contract with the Red Sox and if he does not come to an agreement, he will be eligible to attend Chipola and re-enter the 2017 Draft. “I’m going to get together with my adviser and that’s what we’re going to discuss,” Groome said. “Money doesn’t matter to me. I’m just excited for the next chapter in my life and I can’t wait to get started. I have a chance to play for my favorite team. I can’t ask for anything more than that.” Read More: Baseball – Red Sox Take Jason Groome No. 12 Overall in MLB Draft | shoresportsnetwork.com/baseball-red-sox-take-jason-groome-no-12-overall-in-mlb-draft/?trackback=tsmclip

Some better quotes from another local source, kid sounds pumped... "It’s a crazy feeling,” Groome said, “hearing my name get called, especially by the Red Sox. My family went crazy. It’s a dream come true.” The slot signing bonus for the12th pick this year is $3,192,800. Groome said he couldn’t go to sleep Wednesday night, finally falling asleep at 4 a.m. Thursday morning. “I was so pumped for it,” Groome said. “I couldn’t wait to have my name called. When it finally came, I took a deep breath and said, ‘You did it.’ This is the next chapter of my life, and I can’t wait to start, especially in Fenway MLB Network experts said during the telecast that one reason Groome was dropping was questions about his maturity. Groome laughed those reports off while eating ribs. “It didn’t make me feel bad,” Groome said. “Everything happens for a reason. I always said I wanted to end up somewhere where I was comfortable and felt protected. There’s no better spot to do that than Boston.” Groome grew up admiring former Red Sox stars Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez. Groome used to wear his Red Sox gear to Yankee Stadium to watch Boston play. Groome’s favorite player now is Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. “I always liked Fenway Park,” Groome said. “Everyone in my family is a Yankees fan. I always liked the Red Sox a little better. Ending up in Boston is so awesome. I’m so comfortable because they’re my favorite team.” That quote alone is enough to make him a Boston fan favorite. The negotiations between Groome’s advisor Jeff Randazzo and the Red Sox will be interesting. Boston has until July 15 to sign Groome. “That’s something me and my advisor are going to discuss,” Groome said when asked about future contract talks. “Money doesn’t mean that (much) to me. I’m happy I’m able to start the next chapter of my life, and that’s playing professional baseball.” Contract negotiations are for another day anyway. Thursday was time for Groome to celebrate. “I worked my tail off to get where I am,” Groome said. “and couldn’t be any happier about where I got picked.” m.pressofatlanticcity.com/sports/local/highschool/barnegat-s-jason-groome-it-s-a-dream-come-true/article_d6c73fee-2e8b-11e6-b3fc-b7848dae3427.html?mode=jqm

If he signs for anywhere near slot, that's a positive
If it was another team that took him in the early teens, I'd say there was a pretty good chance he goes back to school and tries to get into next year's top 5. But with the Sox, I think he signs, though they probably drag it out a while
I expect them to go on a run of college seniors to scrounge up an extra $500-$750k and lock down Groome. Hopefully a college arm or two that might be viable in the pen within 18 months

Hmmmmm. This goes back to my feeling that Chatham's offer is contingent on Groome signing first.

Jason Groome pick by Boston very interesting. There is no deal in place. Groome wants top 5 money. Sox's pool is only $7M. Game of chicken.

I'm less worried about Groome signing then I am about the remaining figure. It'll have to be a creative draft. That's the price you pay for a top 3 talent at 12.

This is awesome. The kid sounds ecstatic to be a part of the Sox organization. The Sox aren't a small market team that needs to nickel and dime. They can take care of him ala Xander with an extra 100K here and there, in a way an Oakland might not. With that, hopefully they can sign him closer to #6-8 slot rather than #2-4 money, and get potential top of the draft potential in the mid-first round.

This is a fun argument to have:
Who has the better curveball- Groome or Espinoza?
Could Groome be possibly better than "the one?"
Sure Neo can dodge bullets and jump off mountains and land on his two feet unfazed but it sounds like Groome can rip buildings from their foundations and throw them a square mile.
Classic matchup between King Kong and Godzilla here.

You need to go back and do Baseball Economics 101 again. Who has the better curveball- Groome or Espinoza? The only relevant question is: who has the most obedient curveball?

What's to stop the Sox, or any team for that matter, to sign him @ 7 slot money & just send him a "bag of cash" to make up for the #3 slot money difference? I mean, John Henry must have that kind of money in his wallet right now.

I am thinking we'll know our chances of signing him by who the team takes in rounds 3-6 today. The "tell" will be if it is a bunch of below cap picks. I would assume the team thinks they will sign him if they go that route. The staff here went over this in last night's podcast, complete with a meowing cat.

Probably not a good time to do that while the international operation is under scrutiny for skirting the intent of the law (though not necessarily letter).

Read that Groome says he wants top 5 money. 5th pick slot is $4.382MM. 12th slot is $3.193MM. Difference is only $1.189MM. With RS total pool of over 7MM and the non penalized overage allowed not really sure why this would even be an issue to sign him? Assuming he is true to his word of top 5 and not really saying he wants the full 7MM to sign?
If he signs for somewhere around 4 - 4.5MM this was a fantastic roll of the dice by the RS. Even if he ends up a bust, I applaud them going for it here. IMO the amount of high end talent 26 and under on the ML club and on the farm is among the very best in baseball. So taking a chance on adding another is a really good strategy IMO.
RS have had real trouble developing pitchers who do not command 2 pitches well coming into the system. Espinoza came in with a good feel for that as a young kid. According to the scouts so does Groome. So, I am just really hoping he is not a jackwad like Denny or some of the others. Hoping he is a good teammate and his character is one that is a positive for the organization. If it is then the RS maybe got the very best player in this draft. Maybe.
