What's to stop the Sox, or any team for that matter, to sign him @ 7 slot money & just send him a "bag of cash" to make up for the #3 slot money difference? I mean, John Henry must have that kind of money in his wallet right now. You're thinking of college football and basketball.

Groome pitched fewer than 60 innings as a junior and 35 innings in his senior season. During his year at IMG, he worked on mechanics, strength training and conditioning. That is a big plus considering the wear and tear that many of these kids have before being drafted. Even if he signs late, it will not impact the number of innings that he would pitch this summer considering the caution that the Sox use.

I forgot no unauthorized money is exchanged in college/pro sports.

The last time I heard that being from a cold-weather state is actually an advantage rather than a disadvantage: when we drafted Trey Ball...

The name Trey Ball is going to be my MLB Draft drinking game from now on...Doubt I'll last beyond the Comp Round picks.

I'm no scout but I don't know how you can't love this pick. Gotta laugh at the beating around the bush of supposed off the field issues. If there were a real issue, wouldn't we have some public outing of it? I've read phrases like he likes to have too much fun, he's a party boy, etc. OK, sign me up. Get me forty party boys who like to have too much fun every draft.

Keith Law chat:
mike: can you explain the reason what the catch-all term “character concerns” is so often used (e.g. Groome) and what those concerns are are not actually reported by anyone? Is it respect for kid’s privacy or something else
Klaw: Because lawyers. I know what’s up with Groome – I did some background work of my own to check on some of the rumors (nearly all of which turned out to be false … for example, he was not kicked out of IMG). But I can’t say exactly what I know because ESPN has editorial standards for reporting and I abide by those.

More Keith Law chat:
Joe: Knowing what you know would you have taken Groome with a top 3 pick?
Klaw: Yes, I would have. I might have handled him differently post-draft than other prospects, but so what? If you find a talented kid with a drinking problem, but no history of violence, abuse, destructive behavior, etc., you might still draft and sign him, but have EA people in place with him, avoid certain environments, etc. That’s the cost of developing players to me.

Been hearing through reports that the "bad makeup" issues with Groome is that he was a "partier."
Color me shocked. A 17 year old likes to drink and the media are making a stink about it.
That's what we all did at the age of 17. Then what happened? We grew up and took the next step on life. This kid is about to turn into a professional, I have no doubt he'll be able to do it without a second thought.

Anyone not have maturity issues and drink socially at 17? Go ahead and pat yourselves on the back.

I also wouldn't be surprised if his parents are strict and he just went a little nuts after leaving home for the first time. Or maybe I'm talking about myself.

I don't trust anyone who wasn't a little immature and partied at 17.

We are really just speculating. It could be anything or nothing. He might just be a big guy who looks like a man but acts like a boy still. Maturity issues can sometimes just be "not as mature as others the same age" as in maybe not sophisticated or urbane or whatever. Maybe he's just a good kid who still listens to his mom and dad and is not a full fledged adult yet. From what I've seen I'm not concerned about major problems at all. He looks and acts fine. So far, he seems to be saying the right things.
I'm welcoming this big lug with open arms. I have a son who looks and acts just like him. The Redsox seem confident and we should be too.
Now he should just focus on being the best player he can be and realize that he has been given a gift. It's up to him what to do with it. He's not responsible for taking care of his entire family but if he works hard and makes the most of his talent their lives will be changed forever and no one will be more proud of him than his parents. Look at his dad in the video. What a picture any of us can relate to. So joyous he broke down. I was like that when one son got admitted to MIT. It was like the heavens opened up and gave us such happiness it was unimaginable. His dad has had a hell of a life working so hard and being away from home so much. Imagine not being able to see your son play ball a lot when he was as good as this young man. They sent him for Florida to get the professional training he needed and have sacrificed and now they get to see their son maybe become a major leaguer. It must be unimaginable happiness for them. His dad could die and go to heaven right now and he'd willingly do it for the chance to see what his son just did.
I love the passion of this game. The humanity of it. I'm sure we all are extremely happy for this young man and his family.

ASF: was there a drinking age law when you were 17? It was 18 in my day, but no big deal, a fake id, not that anyone bothered to check in those days.

My experience with a lot of the people who didn't drink in HS because their parents were super strict or whatever, was that once they got to College they went overboard and quite a few of them ended up getting alcohol poisoning.

I would be a lot less worried* if he got caught smoking weed rather than drinking. Drinking has far more self destructive upside than Sweet Leaf does...
*Having drank, smoked, popped, dropped and snorted my way through that age in life during the mid to late 70's while surviving an accidental od along the way as my AV and sig could imply.
