Groome v Espinoza is an interesting debate. We haven't seen Groome in professional ball yet, so by default it's hard to rank him above Espinoza, but I'll give my guess on the comparison. They both get called out for good command and mechanics for their age, so I'd call that even. Groome has the better body and is left handed, but "makeup" goes to Espinoza. Espinoza probably has a better fastball based on velocity, but Groome would probably have the better curve. Changeup is a wash but gun to my head Espinoza threw it more so I'd give him the nod. And lastly, Espinoza is closer to the majors. Overall seems close to me. Wondering everyone else's thoughts.

The age-advancement gives it to Espinoza, I think. We've seen him dominate the GCL and be at least pretty good in Greenville, and he'll be one solid year ahead of Groome in terms of development track. But it's close.

The dreamy rotation possibilities is almost to much to contemplate with Espinoza, Groome and don't forget Kopech if all 3 worked out. Something like the Verlander/Scherzer and Sanchez trio Detroit ran out every 3 days in 2013.

If raudes can continue to outperform expectations, this might come true. With the difference that we should have a way better offense!

I wouldn't get your hopes up on Raudes (I know that's sacrilegious to some). But unless he can add some velocity, he'll have to have good movement with that fastball and be elite with his command & control - in addition to having a plus obediant curve and solid change.
Now he might be decent #4 or more likely #5. But I doubt he turns into a Matz/Harvey type pitcher.

When we drafted him I shot up threw my clicker and cursed f no way! Noooo f way! I still can't believe it. He is the best player in the draft. Over all a real solid draft. If we manage to get one of the exciting names after the 10th rd signed and all the picks before the 10th rd signed I'm a happy guy. Groom is imo the best player in this draft by far.

I think I slapped my hands together and kinda yelled "yes" about 4 times when Groome's name was announced. I'm sure there were some over the top reactions to the pick. If someone has a good one please post.

If someone has a good one please post. Thursday was an event for me, as I brought 4 members of the weekly movie group I host with me to the weekly-ish movie group I attend, to co-present them Gattaca. My home gang are sci-fi buffs, the road group are cinephiles who know very little about sci-fi, so it was very gratifying that they really dug it. So far so good. I arrived home at midnight, knowing I had to get up early to drive 14 1/2 hours to NC. So I wrote down the names of the top 12 guys, and started fast-forwarding on the DVR to each pick, crossing off each name as they were taken. When the White Sox took Collins, I realized that we'd have 3 of Groome, Rutherford, Dunn, and Lewis to choose from. I was so excited that I had to restrain myself from telling my ex-wife about it, a good idea considering that a) she was still busy packing for her temporary move to NC to tend to her sick brother*, and b) although she will listen to baseball stories now in small doses, it remains true that my paying too much attention to it was a factor in the breakup of our marriage. When we drafted Groome ... I went into the kitchen, where something like the following conversation nevertheless took place: EV: [Grinning] I can't believe this ... X: I'm busy. EV: This is just one sentence [something I often say and then violate], the Red Sox just drafted the best player in the draft with the #12 pick. X: [Quizzical look, which is an unexpected win for me] EV: He wanted a lot of money. I go back to the living room, then restrain myself from going back to the kitchen to add "And he's a huge Red Sox fan!" Now, here's the rest of the story. On Tuesday afternoon we had been hit by a freak stray lightning bolt that had fried one of my TV's two HDMI inputs. We were now using the other one. But the next evening, while I was enroute to NC, it started failing, too, and by Sunday it was entirely dead. No reason it couldn't have failed a day earlier ... I would have been so pissed. *She's driving an hour each day to where he's hospitalized. Is this actually true in America, that you can live an hour from the nearest good hospital? They have way too much empty space in those states down there.

They have way too much empty space in those states down there. Or not enough, for people like me... I can relate to obsessions breaking up a marriage. Luckily the right one for me is a big Red Sox fan, though she draws the line at anything past watching every game together. I tried to explain wRC+ to her the other day and that was pretty funny.

Eric nice that your group enjoys Scifi. It's so ironic to me that because of the lattitude for creative writing this genre has the potential to be the most gratifying, yet most often breaks down into nonstop chase scenes and battles which don't capture the wonder of discovery as in the 1960 Time Machine. I remember, as many, loving Contact, and Minority Report as well, but not much for quite a while. Gattaca was enjoyable and Her and Source Code as well, and it seems there is a bit more hope lately. Do you suppose the others simply capitulate to the formula they think will make money by pleasing teen boys?

I just record every game and watch them in my alone time. Occasionally we watch an inning together where we discuss how mamy points the teams have and how cute Betts and Bogie are and where iare Daniel Nava and Salty? To be fair, her brothers are Dodger fans and she has been to many games since being a kid, enjoys minor league games and ST for reasons of her own, was a great baseball mom for two decades, enjoys buying me Red Sox stuff, and is looking forward to our scheduled Sox games at Petco, Big A and Chavez Ravine. Live games are fun TV games not so much. Stats are irrelevant to enjoying life. She is a dedicated pink hat who loves when the Sox win, which is a beautiful thing.

My wife of over 30y doesn't really care for BB, tho goes to games and we both go to Fort Myers during the GCL season 1-2 times for several day stay every year. She will go to Rays games, only when her company rents one of the luxury suites 3-4 times per season as they do, being one of the main sponsors (Brighthouse) and will tag along. It's all give and take. Just stay that way and marriages will last forever.

My first was a disaster from the beginning as we had nothing in common and she wanted to change everything about me. I even tried for 11 years, but was miserable. I got married too young. The woman I'm with now is who I should have always been with. But oh well, I'm happy now! Her first birthday gift for me was a trip to Fenway, where I hadn't been in 25 years. She's a keepah! Oh yeah, Jason Groome...

Great stories!
The day of the draft my wife was out doing one of her two favorite pastimes - shopping. She was supposed to be home around 6:30 and we would soon eat dinner afterward. Instead she came home closer to 7:45 and was very apologetic, which for this one time, I didn't mind, because that gave me leverage to bargain pushing off dinner to beyond 8:30 because I wanted to see who the Sox drafted 12th.
My 3 year old was watching Disney Jr (instead of posting on Soxprospects.com thankfully!) downstairs and I'd run up every 5 minutes to see who was drafted, and I calculated that the Sox would pick around 8:20. Instead of going on this site to find out who the Sox would draft just before it was announced I wanted to hear it live not knowing, and I was over the moon when I heard Jason Groome's name get called!
I was excited last year, too when the Sox drafted Benintendi, but wasn't too thrilled with the Ball selection and was neutral on the Chavis selection in 2014.
My wife is definitely NOT a baseball fan. She doesn't understand why I devote so much time caring about millionaires playing a game whom I'll never meet. It's not easy for her dealing with my addiction, but we've been married for nearly 13 years so it's all good, and it worked out great during this draft - although she thought the Sox drafting a kid with a drinking or drug problem wasn't the greatest idea in the world.

Do we have a definitive pronunciation of Groome. I listened to Effectively Wild Podcast episode 902: The Names to Know for Draft Day One the other day. Chris Crawford was on with Ben and Sam and he mentioned Jason Groome around the 9:20 mark, the 10:08 mark and again at the 12:30, 13:18 and 13:50 mark ( with the last being more definitively mentioned). It distinctly appears his name is pronounced "Grome" rhyming with the city in Italy (guessing more German origination) and not like Groom. www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=29489

The short version is that we're in a golden age of sci-fi films, but almost entirely because of mid- and low-budget films, and the latter have not crossed most people's radar.

“@weei: ESPN’s Keith Law: Teams believe Jason Groome was ‘upset’ to be drafted by Red Sox t.co/iannbBysguThe Red Sox made one of the most interesting selections in the 2016 MLB draft as they selected high school left-hander Jason Groome No. 12 overall. Groome was once thought as a No. 1 overall pick, but slid all the way down to No. 12. Being the No. 12 overall pick, the slot value for that pick is $3,192,800 and many believe he’s seeking top five draft pick money, which may have scared some teams away. Appearing on Buster Olney’s podcast, ESPN’s Keith Law said teams believe Groome was upset to be selected by the Red Sox as he had a deal with another team picking after the Red Sox for more money. He did add he believes eventually Groome will sign for around $4 million.

He did add he believes eventually Groome will sign for around $4 million. Let's see if I understand this properly. He (or his agent) was upset that a team picking after the Sox was going to sign him for money than he'd get from the Sox. Would that team picking behind the Sox have a lower slot value and less money to play with than the Sox would? If that's so, then that team would be in a situation where they have to allocate just about all their money (to pay top 5 money or thereabouts) to Groome and sign a bunch of college seniors for 10K or something like that? I don't know. If a kid who is 17, supposedly grew up a Red Sox fan, claims he doesn't care too much about money, gets picked by his team and is offered 3.8 to 4 million, why is he so upset? I really hope this is the agent talking, and not the kid.

Despite having the 12th pick, Boston had the 19th highest pool (due to comp picks).
As an example, the Dodgers picked 20th but had over 2Mn more in pool money to spend.

This is probably the agent doing damage control, since Groome went out and was a dumb kid and said things like "its not about the money".

The kid says he doesn't care about money, so we should sign him for 10k.
Come on. I'm not going to bash the kid for whatever he signs for, because he earned whatever the market pays him. Good for Jay and good for Boston.
