Doubtful Cherrington would do this unless Napoli's hip is hanging by a piece of fraying gristle. It would mean giving up a draft pick for a second tier free agent.

No, it's not. Especially for Laroche. This is posturing/leverage if anything.

If the Sox could somehow get Laroche at two years I think it would be crazy not to say goodbye to Napoli and sign Laroche. He is older, but the guy is coming off a gold glove year at 1st base compared to Napoli who hasn't played the position and stands to be somewhat of a liability defensively. If the Sox truly plan to use Napoli at catcher it would change my opinion, but I don't think that is the case.
Offensively, I don't see a big difference between the two. If the numbers favor any player, it would be Laroche. I think in the end it probably comes down to the draft pick, but is it worth taking the lesser player to save a 2nd round pick?

Your not just saving the 2nd round pick. You're saving the slot money that is associated with it. I think many of us would rather have that so they can get the best player at #7, knowing they have a big chunk of cash to "borrow from" at ~#44 to make sure it gets done.

I completely agree with the comments above
1) negotiating with LaRoche creates leverage in dealing with Napoli. He is seen as damaged goods now and will receive the best contract from us.
2) #7 is a great place to sit on draft day and it is all about staying under the cap. The 2nd round pick helps us get better players in the draft. Everything they've done in overpaying Ross, Victorino, Drew, Dempster and Napoli has been about keeping the draft pick and having short term contracts.
They can make a trade if they end up needing a first baseman.
Gomez/Salty/Lavarnway are possible internal options, which do seem to be few, especially after dealing Sands. Right now, Mitch Maier is the staring first baseman in Pawtucket and he's had very few games at first in his ten year career.

He is a worse offensive player than Napoli offensively (and a far worse base runner, can't ignore that).

Sidenote: Napoli will have bad range at 1B, but the skills necessary to be even a terrible catcher-- soft hands, tracking errant throws, digging balls out of the dirt, having a wide receiving radius, having a strong and accurate arm, etc.-- will serve him very well at 1B.

If Napoli does indeed fall through, then I would start the season with a Salty (LH) / Gomez (RH) Platoon.
If and when Laroche signs with Washington, then make a play for Morse. I don't see the sox sacrificing the pick when they've spent all winter overpaying to protect it. Plus Laroche was here for a split second back in his "Prime." He wasn't anything special then , one good year doesn't change a player that much.
