There has been talk on what Mauro Gomez will contribute to the team next year.
Gomez is a home run hitting minor-league-journeyman. minor-league-journeyman rarely pan out to be productive in the big leagues. the only examples that i can think of is michael morse and raul ibanez, but i'm sure there is more. you could say bryan lahair, but he quicky lost production after a fast start and is now playing in japan.
is gomez an exception to not panning out? what production is he capable of? what will he contribute to the team in 2013 and beyond?

Depends on how many ab's you could get him. He'd be fortunate --bad stuff will have to happen--to win a backup 1b/platoon DH job coming out of ST so while I don't think he'd embarrass himself he'd have to show a lot of patience to be productive in a limited capacity.

1B in Rhode Island all year, hopefully.
If he truly is the late bloomer some see him as, he should be playing every day somewhere. If he's getting meaningful ABs in Boston, bad for the team. If he's the backup in Boston, bad for him.

Maura posted a .275/.324/.422 in hs rookie, albeit 27 yr. old, ML season. So at least for 37 games, he showed he can hit ml pitching.
He's been labeled as "good hit, no field" for his career thusfar. But can he be any worse at First base than the guy with the bad hip BC is trying to sign?

He can also be worse on defense. I remember reports in Spring Training from Mellen and/or Meoli that Gomez was a butcher at 1B.

I agree with Buff that if Gomez is getting more than 150 abs for the Red Sox then they are likely headed for another lost season. Even if they can work out a deal with Napoli, I don't see the Red Sox winning more than 80 to 85 games in 2013.

He is an excellent depth player to have in case of injury. That is his role... with health concerns for Napoli... this is a critical piece.
