He looked good through 3 innings. He left with a lead. We have 2+ years left. He's on cheap arbitration money. I'm remaining real positive. Generally agree. Had the wheels come off in the fourth there, but I saw enough to believe that was an aberration - his first three innings were somewhat inefficient in terms of pitch count, but otherwise very effective. Wanted his first outing to go better than that, but there are positives to take from this as well.

No worries. The first three innings, the curve and the cutter showed how unhittable he is, when he has control. Typically, he gets better as the game goes on. Aberration, yes. Lot of pressure, new city, lots of adjustments.

How can dombrowski sleep at night after watching this game. Espinoza will be missed. I bet he's sleeping just fine

Great win. Love taking both from the best team in baseball. It was great to take both, but the Red Sox really lucked out with the opposing starters this series.

Great win! Exciting and terrifying game. I thought for sure they were going to lose. I peaked at the game in the 6th and saw the Giants with the bases loaded and no outs down just one run. When I came back to the game I saw it was the bottom of the sixth and still an 8-7 game. What a job by Matt Barnes. This may be blasphemy, but maybe he's a better pitcher than has been given credit for. Yeah, he gives up too many HRs, but he's pitched pretty well this season and seems to be getting better. At this point I trust him more than Koji, who also has gopheritis.
And how about Hanley?! What a huge game for him. He has been a joy to watch this season and his defense was great tonight.
And Sandy Leon? I hope his deal with the devil doesn't expire until at least after this season ends. He's not hitting a lucky or soft .430-something. He's been crushing the ball. And suddenly the catching position has some major offense going on after a season of practically no offense (Thanks Vazquez and Hanigan)

This might be the most unpopular post ever, but real solid job by Farrell tonight. He didn't panic when his new starter lost it in the 4th and Pomeranz kind of regained it a bit and would have made it out of there if not for 2 unlucky bouncers. It happens, but a weaker manager would have removed his possibly valuable piece of the rotation earlier. I saw Farrell do it earlier this year with Price and Tito used to do it and I just love it. Trust your guys man, don't panic and if you gotta lose, do it together. Guys play hard for the unfazed manager.
Not only that, but he saw nobody had anything tonight except Matt Barnes and just left him in there to go the full Clint Eastwood circa Man with No Name. That's how you do macho, not throwing at guys elbows because they swung too hard. Used The Ziegler to finish it off as if to say to the Giants "not this even year, you're not facing sorry franchises like Texas or Detroit, try again 2 years later". I'm a big believer in mind games and we minded the game out of the Giants. Big game, great win, fantastic job by Farrell.

Terrific showing for Barnes. Bailed the team out on a night when nobody else could get outs. Ross got five straight outs, walked a batter, then was removed. Thought that's what I remembered so I went to the play-by-play to confirm. He was the one who came in to steady the ship in the 4th after Pomeranz lost it. There were a few good performances, along with Hembree's (small) meltdown. But that's relief pitching.

Something we the fans never know is who's really available and who isn't and for how long. Some pitchers could feel great and go even if they've been worked a lot lately and some others could feel like crap or be nursing like a minor blister. That's why I lean towards trusting the manager's decision making with the bullpen. He obviously has access to this info and we don't.

Some incredible clutch performances tonight but none better than Barnes. This has to have been his best night in the majors. I'm not slighting Hanley - who had a historic performance - but without Barnes this game could have been blown.
Look at the box score and the OPS. Have you ever seen a team with such OPS? I haven't.
The Sox are taking the AL East.

Barnes' performance was huge in this game. But can't forget about Robbie Ross who came and put out the fire. Huge performance from him. And Hanley, wow. Pomeranz owes Hanley a dinner.

Pomeranz owes Hanley a dinner. Hanley makes about 16 times what Pomeranz does, so a firm handshake might be more appropriate.

Hanley almost doubled his fWAR last night. .6 to 1.1 (bWAR is 1.4 for anyone wondering).

Why Farrell will burn him out come September.

Stranded both runners. Ross should get some love as well. Is Layne DFA'd yet?

To get... William Cuevas up? Kimbrel, Uehara, and Tazawa (not to mention Carson Smith) are all on the disabled list. Designating anyone who isn't outstanding when you need replacement-level competence would be foolish. In fact, the current state of the bullpen validates the decision to hoard depth and hold only Layne all those times that people demanded he be cut to make room for Heath Hembree. Layne has a 3.19 ERA and 3.59 FIP in 93 innings with Boston since they called him up in 2014. This numbers this year are almost the same (3.42, 3.41). He's clearly good enough to be on a team that needs arms. EDIT: Cutting Layne would almost inevitably lead to Ross being used sub-optimally. Ross is a guy who can go multiple innings while Layne is more of a strict LOOGY. They complement each other very well.
