JetBlue is only a 45 minute drive for me. I'll probably go watch him Monday and Saturday. Very excited to see him pitch in person

Ryan Hannable @ryanhannable Red Sox first-rounder Jason Groome will indeed make pro debut Mon. in GCL, per sources. He'll start & be limited to 1-2 innings, 35 pitches.

Lowell is in contention for a playoff spot. Wouldn't be surprised to see him make two GCL starts and then - if all goes well - see him start 9/2 at Connecticut. That would line him up to pitch a potential playoff game as well. Currently Lowell is tied for first with Connecticut, and 1.5 games out of the wild card.

Then you're not out there very often, I've seen Jason on ball duty several times in the past month that he's been down here. Just because he's a bonus baby doesn't mean he's getting treated differently by that ***hat of a pitching coach Dick Such and Tom Kotchman. This is completely inappropriate and won't be tolerated. This is your warning. Completely agree. ***hat should have been plural

Yes, the Red Sox play the majority of their GCL home games inside JetBlue, a couple of times they will play on the backfields. Groome is slated to throw only a couple of innings on Monday and will get a longer leash on Saturday, per Jason Groome himself. Thanks for the info.

Would really appreciate it to cease the insults on Kotch, who have known since his days of managing the old Winter haven Red Sox back in the early 80's to some extent and he's a very knowledgeable baseball man and friendly.
My wife and I will both greet him and say goodbye to both him, as well as Dave Strom each and every trip during the summer, it's not as if either of those 2 are some kind of "stiff's" or anything. Have seen Strom especially in action nearly every trip and know he's a motivator and Kotch wouldn't have kept a job managing for well over 30y continuously if he wasn't a fine manager in his own right.
Believe the GCL club has a fine coaching staff overall and is in good hands.

Only two innings? He's obviously never going deep in games. Maybe the Padres will take him for Ross.

I love the size and the fact that he is lh. It augers well especially given his age.
Not to be a damper but I recall when drafted his velo was reported as high as 98. Subsequent reports lowered that to a high of 95. The latter was confirmed today.
Both Owens and Johnson were reported to have a FB at 92-94.
Last year at this time we were so excited by a 6.0' Espinoza. I saw him at 17 throw 99 in the GCL. This year he has a combined ERA of 4.89 with more than a hit/inning in low A.
All of which is to say that some tempering is in order. It is way early.
Like all I love to fantasize about our future players. Hope springs eternal. I am a charter member of that club. But let's wait before a coronation.

That's a very low effort delivery. Love how many strikes he threw. The catcher barely moved his glove after setting up. The only critique is that he looks like he can have bases stolen on him.

Some random thoughts:
- it's his first start and our shiny new toy so have at the over reactions and analysis of video. But let's remember soon that while positive results are nice we often don't really know much about a prospect until we see what they do when they reach AA. AA is the true first make or break point. Over the years I've learned to temper expectations until a player performs at this level. Not that AA performance is the end all and be all but it's the first true test.
- just because a guy is nice and/or in baseball for 30 years doesn't make him good at his job. If it does, then people here need to cease all criticism of guys in this position: from Farrell to Bobby V to Harold Reynolds and Nick Cafardo... Js
- not that I care but how will the guys in Lowell feel about Groome not being with them all year then popping in for a playoff start?

- not that I care but how will the guys in Lowell feel about Groome not being with them all year then popping in for a playoff start? If someone can't handle getting passed over for more talented players with maturity, then minor league baseball isn't for him. Last year at this time we were so excited by a 6.0' Espinoza. I saw him at 17 throw 99 in the GCL. This year he has a combined ERA of 4.89 with more than a hit/inning in low A. This line - which I keep seeing over and over - is incredibly frustrating to me. He's the youngest pitcher in his league. Would it be better for him to be dominating hitters his age, or holding his own against significantly stronger competition? Minor league FIP isn't a be-all, end-all, but his was 3.00 at the time of the trade and 3.52 since. He's yet to face a batter younger than him, yet his strikeouts, walks, and home runs allowed (and fly ball rate as an underlying measure) have all been excellent. His problem is that he's allowing singles in front of crummy A-ball defenses. Tempering expectations is good, but that also includes being realistic about what a player is doing well.

James I understand your frustrations and reasons therefor.
At the same time I have, over a lifetime, so often been burned by buying into the hype generated by this or that prospect that I have become a bit jaundiced.
Espinoza was a 99 mph phenom a year ago. He is young and may well be Clemens 2.0. But he is very far away. His results this year, youth notwithstanding, are not the stuff of legends.
So let's temper on Espinoza and Groome while holding hope for the best.

If it was advice, it was to myself. A main reason we are here is because we love to see who is coming and fantasize having them in Boston. More times than not I have been disappointed so I try to stay on an even keel. As James gets frustrated by people ignoring Espinoza's age in assessing performance (understandable), it's also frustrating to hear calls ( before the trade) for Espinoza to be in Boston by Sept. or described as the next Pedro. The same thing will happen with Groome and Kopech..(did with Owens and Johnson et al). But that is human nature applied to baseball fans.

I will add that Owens and Johnson never had nor had the potential to have the "stuff" Kopech and Groome have. However, your point remains valid.

Yeah, De La Rosa and Webster are much better candidates for the "All-Hype First Team" than Owens or Johnson.

Only talking pitchers. It is hard not to get excited about the high ceiling and potential of both kopech and groome. How many of the other organizations have 2 of this caliber. Deepjohn in the kopech thread showed info on the high rate of injuries with young power pitchers. We all want both up with the sox pitching like a young david price, now. I hope dave and john and brian do it in a slow methodical way and have them pitching the price way in 2 or 3 years and stay with the sox for 10. I certainly do not want them to be 6 month flash in the pan with injuries that limit or retire them early. IMHO Hard not to get excited about both!!!
