If any one has reasonable confidence in when Groome pitches next, please let us know, Friday in the NYPL

I think this has been the stated plan pretty much from the get-go. They were saying they hoped to get him a start or two in Lowell the day he signed.

When a guy is ranked as the top overall talent in the draft, he better be in full-season ball in his first full season.

He just turned 18 though. Just graduated HS. I look @ Espinoza'a year as an 18 Year old in low A & he hasn't performed that well. Maybe a year in Lowell, then @ 19 start in G'ville/Salem next year.

Look, I know the kid (AE) has top shelf stuff. I'm just tired of hearing "he's the youngest guy in the league, so he gets a pass" thing. Due to your status/tenure here, and probably more direct knowledge of these prospects, if your telling me he had a good year, then I'll accept it.

He has 100 strikeouts, only 35 walks, and has allowed only three home runs in 108 1/3 innings. His problem, if there is one, is that he's allowed a lot of singles. There's probably some of that which is attributable to being young and not fully understanding pitch sequencing, but most of it is just bad defense. Look at the BABIP for the Greenville pitching staff: www.soxprospects.com/stats/pitching.php?split=0&page=1&sortby=BABIP&team=428&year=2016&type=3&min=0He had a 3.00 FIP with Greenville and has a 3.18 one with Fort Wayne. He's been outstanding. Groome is arguably a better prospect than Espinoza was at the same time last year, is more physically developed, and would also be seven months older in April than Espinoza was at the start of this season (18y,8mo vs. 18,1).

I think people automatically look at the ERA over 4 and K/9 of under 9 and think he's struggled. The Greenville defense killed him, as he has pitched to a ton of (often weak) grounder contact. It also explains his relatively high H/9. The FIP tells a much more accurate story.

I expect Groome to be solid in Greenville next year. Hopefully he can keep the walks down. Looking forward to seeing the progression of Groome.
As Benintendi and Moncada graduate from prospect status, Groome will be the few prospects to follow.

Wow. He might as well tell the guy he is throwing a curve! I can see that thing coming from a mile away.

Groome's curve "back in the day" we'd call it a "high school curve." Comes right at you from the 3/4 slot and breaks across for a strike. In the video and when I saw him live, the curve works in these scenarios:
1) AA or lower level hitters 2) First pitch 'get me over curve" that most hitters will let go 3) Lefties who can't hit lefties 4) Or if he places it low and outside (like in this video) it will get the job done.
Love the mechanics

Not to nitpick but we may as well start calling him "Jay". It's what others call him. I will have to get used to it as well. Kind of like Mitch Trubisky (for all you football fans) asking that people start calling him Mitchell. Also, I didn't see this posted in this thread. It's from the beginning of spring training: www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2017/03/jason_groome_boston_red_sox_to.html

FWIW, I confirmed the "Jay" thing with Greenville's media guy. Affirmatively wants to be called Jay now, which is why we made the change here at the site when the season started.
Kind of reminds me of when we all used to talk about "Jon Papelbon" on here.

Kind of reminds me of when we all used to talk about "Jon Papelbon" on here. That and proud mama called "noblepap". I don't blame her for leaving the site as Pap moved up to Boston. Can't believe it's been that long already.
