Don't know if it's too early to start a Trade Deadline thread but this today on ESPN. Excerpt: Stark's take: Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski has always been aggressive this time of year when he thinks his team has a chance to win. But he's shopping for a commodity that's virtually not for sale. Speaking of which, the Red Sox are one of the clubs that has asked about White Sox ace Chris Sale but have balked at the mammoth price tag. One source says Dombrowski has always coveted Oakland's Sonny Gray and would still have interest. But you can forget the ace behind door No. 3, because Tampa Bay is highly unlikely to send Chris Archer to Boston. Teams that have talked with the Red Sox say Dombrowski is also prepared to wait for a few days in case a team or two falls out of the race and decides to sell. Seattle, Kansas City and Detroit could all fit that profile, though it's far from certain any of those teams would look to move a top-of-the-rotation starter.

If there's any cheap trades available, I won't be upset. But there's no huge need that will drastically improve the team's ability to win this year that will be worth doing. Just recognize that Ross is about as good or better than Tazawa and the team is improved without making a trade.

I've gone from indifferent about the Cubs to actively routing against them, so that fans won't start thinking that this is smart.

NB: This deal includes the 28th best MLB prospect for a 3 month reliever rental according to Heyman: www.todaysknuckleball.com/knuckleball-news/heyman-yankees-cubs-chapman-deal/The prices are about to get (even more) loopy.

We really need a new 6th inning guy. Anyone not named Papi is available for the right one.

I've gone from indifferent about the Cubs to actively routing against them, so that fans won't start thinking that this is smart. I've gone from actively rooting for them to actively rooting against them. They a) turned a blind eye to what Chapman did, and b) enabled and incentivized the cynical, disgusting "buy-low" move the Yankees made to pick him up. The whole thing is gross.

Woah.. This deal makes the Kimbrel deal look like the best trade ever.. Painful deal for the Cubs. Yanks got Chapman for nothing too..

Woah.. This deal makes the Kimbrel deal look like the best trade ever.. No it doesn't. I would evaluate Torres as better than Devers, maybe equal. Devers is ranked much better than Margot. McKinley is much better than Guerra. They just gave up that for 3 months of Chapman. Clearly the Kimbrel deal was much much better

You should be suspended for an entire year for domestic abuse to begin with, at least. The MLB really dropped the ball here for letting a team capitalize off of a situation that started with a wife beater.

Apparently, the Mets are offering d'Arnaud for Lucroy. Would Swihart be similar value? Would you do that? I don't think I would. Swihart should be more valuable, but I'm pretty happy with Leon right now.

Think about it the Cubs just gave up more than the Red Sox did and that's for 3 months of Chapman. Mind blown Theo would do this

There is only so much MLB can punish him. Hopefully karma gets involved.

Swihart is much more valuable than d'Arnaud at this point. d'Arnaud is already 27. That would be a great deal for the Mets.

I just read that the Royals are interested in Clay, but only if we pick up most of the salary. NO Problem, we'll even send you Brentz or Hernandez. Just send us over Ventura or Hererra.

I saw on CSNNE that the Marlins have been scouting Eduardo Rodriguez. I haven't heard any rumors there, but I wonder who they could be discussing outside of Fernandez?

I don't think his highest of highs are the real him, but I think he's pretty talented and we'd be selling very low on him right now.

That anonymous official then added "Some good risks to take might be on Jeanmar Gomez and Jeremy Hellickson, for example."

And most of all, he's decisive.

All snark aside, I actually like that deal for the Cubs. Which is funny to me, because I haven’t liked the DD deals at all. This is why I'd appreciate this one if I were a Cubs fan:
-The Cubs haven’t won in 100+ years.
-They’ve just gone through a few years that were a real ordeal for their fans. Real painful. The FO kept preaching patience, even as they got close to 90+ losses.
-They’re almost there. They are dominating the National League. Dominating it. If this isn’t a year when you go for it, I don’t know when that is.
-They're a young team already, with a pretty open window.
-They’re not looking at the National League with this, I don’t think. They need a Bullpen that can carve through the monster Boston line-up, the monster Baltimore line-up, or that three-headed monster that is Donaldson-Bautista-Encarnacion (I think the AL WS contender is coming from the AL East). This gets you close to that.
-Oh, value-wise, the deal is terrible. But if there was ever a time to justify a deal like that, I think the Cubs’ situation is precisely it.
-That plus the fact that Epstein has hoarded prospects for a bit, and has actually demonstrated that he truly believes in building through the farm – if he feels he has to do a deal like that, you just gotta to give it to him.
