I clearly indicated why I consider it an outlier. If the teams were above avg in the remaining years, then you can consider 2013 is not an outlier. Since they were below average (last in the division) in other years, it has to be considered an outlier. Let's agree to disagree here, there's absolutely no way I think that 2013 was an outlier. 2013 was a job well done. I am no Farrell supporter and was against them getting him from Toronto to begin with, but as far as records go, 2013 was in fact an outlier when compared with the pre-season projections by Fangraphs (which I think was using ZiPS for this). Not as much as 2012, of course, but we shall not mention he whom we shall not mention. Specifically: Overall Red Sox team performance vs. projections - 2009 projected vs. actual +2 wins over projection. 2010 -4 2011 -4 2012 -22 2013 + 15 2014 -19 2015 -8 As for Farrell specifically in his first year in Toronto the team finished +7 over projections. In 2012, however, the Jays finished -8. So if you're making the case that team performance is in part linked to manager's performance, then Farrell's teams' performances vs. their projections are: 2011 +7 2012 -8 2013 +15 2014 -19 2015* -8 (*Farrell stepped aside as manager on 8-11 for cancer treatment - at the time the Sox were 50-63. After that point they went 28-21). Source: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/team-win-projections-vs-actual-win-totals-2007-present/ I am one of those who believe that a good manager probably won't win you more than a game or so a year (it's really on the players, their health and adjustments), but a bad one will contribute to a team losing several (bullpen management and bad offensive decisions in 0 or 1-run games such as bunting, calling ill-advised hit and runs, not pinch hitting in high leverage situations, etc.). Personally I would've fired Farrell after June of this year for all the reasons I just listed. But realistically, and much more important, if the pitching staff had performed at even an AL average level to this point it would've outweighed and in most cases triumphed over a lot of the bad in-game decisions made by the manager, or created situations where he wasn't even in the position to make them.

A prospect is fun to watch, but trading him for a sure thing in the Majors is never a losing deal.

Been listening to this team and not watching. Kind of afraid to watch at this point. Man do I hate losing streaks.

Lincecum is trash. There is no excuse for this lineup to not light him up.

The Red Sox make opposing pitchers look like their worth 3 or 4 tops prospects.

This home plate umpire needs an immediate vision test.

Just a reminder that Tim Lincecum came into today's game with an ERA over 8. Should be a good one!

Uggh the Sox are giving up hits against bad hitting catchers with 2 outs and RISP. All while making Lincecum look good.

Should've knocked Lincecum around in thr first, if not right out of the game. But a little anxiousness and some help from the umpire and, well, down 2-0.

Sox seem to be hitting into some bad luck recently - squaring up the ball but hitting right at people. I know these things even out...but it really stands out when it happens in bunches.
