Given the low cost of a pick, I could see several teams grabbing a guy just in case. EDIT: Just thought of this, but an extra roster spot also makes it a lot more likely the Red Sox can keep Heath Hembree. I actually think expanding to 26 will make things worse. A lot of clubs, maybe a majority, will use it to go to 13 pitchers rather than add a bench bat, which means more matchup-based pitching changes and less offense. They really need to go to 28 to get some offense back into the game*. All the platoon 1B and LF who can't play the other position, and all the MLB-backup-caliber 2B and 3B who can't play SS -- none of those guys work on a current MLB roster, but they're all good enough to be better than more versatile guys who are currently playing instead. On most clubs 2B and usually 3B is backed up by the backup SS, who provides no offense, and on many clubs RF and usually LF are backed up the backup CF, who is also overqualified with the glove and underqualified with the bat. This was not the case for nearly all of baseball history. Adding a pair of solid bench bats who can pinch hit to every team will reduce pitching changes as well, but the manager will have to decide whether to make the change and face a pinch-hitter, factoring in the benefit of removing the existing player from the lineup. More strategy, more offense, fewer pitching changes. Better game. *And if you look at the size of the talent pool over the years, to match the typical historical level, you'd need to go to 32 teams of 28 players, so 30 teams of 28 is not a dilution of talent from a historical perspective.

From that article I learned that it is 2016 yet Manny Banuelos is still somehow the #18 Dodgers prospect? Without exaggeration, he peaked as a prospect six years ago. Was Andy Marte ranked 25th? ALSO, we're three years into Dellin Betances being a real thing and Banuelos didn't have a relief appearance all season?

Have to think there is going to be more players taken this year with the active roster size possibly increasing to 26.

Rule 5! Rule 5!
Justin Haley to the Angels Aneury Tavarez to the Orioles, of course
Red Sox grabbed Josh Rutledge, which gives them middle infield depth they lost with Dubon.

I swear, the Orioles troll us on the rule 5.

Haley got traded to the Twins, who also love our scraps, after being picked.
Also, is it just me or did half the guys that got picked get traded to the Padres?

Unlike Jason Garcia and Michael Almanzar, I don't think Tavarez would be hurt long-term by the Orioles playing the roster games they do to keep him around. He doesn't profile as more than a backup and he's already close enough.
Haley could stick too. That PawSox rotation is pretty thin if he does. Remember two years ago when there was that glut of Triple-A starters? With Rodriguez, Webster, Barnes, Ranaudo, Owens, Wright, and Johnson? And that didn't even include Rubby De La Rosa, who had graduated and was basically solidified but still had options.
