8/16-8/17 Red Sox @ Orioles Series Thread

Funny how the "Fire Farrell" thread has almost disappeared to fifteen on the list. He didn't have to go to the bullpen yesterday. No decisions to screw up. Day game after a night game today so I expect the thread to resurface in full force.

Just saw this: "Clay Buchholz, Thursday’s starter, was scheduled to fly ahead of the team but his flight was delayed by bad weather and he returned to the ballpark and traveled with the team." Uh-oh. If there was one player I wanted to be well rested for Thursday's matinee in Detroit, it was the starting pitcher. I was wondering why on earth didn't he fly out in the morning? I'm sure they got weather reports in Balt of possible weather in late afternoon & evening (as we did in NC, one county away from VA). We got hammered here with the same system.

Buchholz's 2 seamer has been absolute garbage for 2 years now and he continues to throw it 24% of the time. He should just scrap it and work 4S and cutters only. His cutter has been his best pitch this year and he definitely isn't using it as frequently or effectively as he could.
As for him flying out late, I could really care less. He's pitched poorly the whole year, and lately has gotten some BABIP luck. At this point I'm just hoping for some more. 4 or 5 innings of 2 run ball would be ideal.

Excellent mini-series by the Red Sox over the Orioles. Tonight's game was exactly what they needed - a bullpen rested with Price not being overly taxed. The talent on this team is undeniable. I wonder if we see the L-R (mostly) lineup that we've been looking for: Pedroia/Bogaerts/Ortiz/Betts/Bradley/Ramirez/Shaw/Leon/Benintendi I like the look of that lineup. Big question: will JF slot Hanley in at 6 as you have it? Or will he put him back at 5, JBJ at 6, and restore Betts to 3 and Ortiz to 4? Because the latter is not nearly as good. JBJ is clearly the team's 3rd best hitter, you can't hit him 6th. Honestly, I don't think he would. I think Farrell has an image of Hanley being the Hanley he was from several years ago so he must bat in the middle of the order. I hope he'd bat Bradley 5th and Hanley 6th, but I don't have a ton of faith. OTOH, he did take Betts out of the leadoff spot, put Pedroia and Bogaerts into the correct spots, and actually batted Betts after Ortiz, so maybe..... If this lineup were further in the future, which it couldn't be because Ortiz would be long-gone, Benintendi would probably slot in a lot higher, but at this point, let him bat 9th and give the other guys behind him some RBI opportunities.

FWIW, too, as much as I've had an uneasy feeling about this team repeatedly this year, their talent is undeniable. They've yet to put it all together. If they do, they have the capability to absolutely roll over anyone. If just one of Pomeranz, Kimbrel, or Price reverts to their pre-acquisition form, it would be a huge boost. If all three do so (which really shouldn't be surprising), they have no peer in the AL, and it's really not that close. 100% agree...when you had posted on this or another thread, how this seems to be missing "something", that, as I recall, that you couldn't quite put your finger on, despite them having shown, in stretches, how dynamic their offense could be, and, more recently, how effective their SPs could be, pitching to their talent... ...the imagery that came to mind, at that time, was of kick-starting a just completed restoration of a classic motorcycle, that turned over, but didn't quite fire-up...but you knew when it did, it would really "go"! (I probably watch too much "American Pickers" or "American Restoration"! ) That's a great image.

Furthering that imagery...assuming the mechanic and rider are two different entities (i.e. DD-FO/Farrell)...how to parse out failure to not quite get it "turned over", yet...?... ...the mechanic has clearly worked hard on the rebuild, in a number of areas, down through the last bit of what they felt was necessary fine tuning...and/or should the rider be able to start er up. as she stands?...but for some reason, hasn't yet been able to get her to full throttle, for long stretches... ...when Clay left that game today, and Sox entered the 8th inning w/ a 3-1 lead, I thought perhaps we're in the middle of that run, if they could hold on and push their streak to "7", amidst this challenging stretch of their schedule... ...settling the BP appears to be standing between this Sox team, and a great run on the open Road.
