I'll be at the Saturday and Sunday games.
They have lost every game I've ever been to at Detroit (6 total). I'm sorry guys, but Boston is losing the last two games because of me. I just cannot help myself.

Updated projected final SOS-adjusted standings. This projects the remaining games using 90% underlying stats (BaseRuns) to date, and 10% actual performance, including Win Efficiency ("karma"), where we rank 3rd worst at -6.4 wins.
101.1 ChC 95.3 Was 94.8 Bos 94.7 Tor 94.5 Cle 93.0 Tex 91.9 Bal 89.8 LAD 87.8 Sea 87.5 Det 86.9 SF 86.2 StL
We were in 3rd before the June swoon; this is the first time we've been back there. Our SOS-adjusted BaseRuns Win% is up to .630, second to the Cubs .645; the Nats are .617 and the Indians are .586.
Yes, 7 of the 10 best clubs in MLB are in the AL. The overall projected AL edge is 3.5 wins -- it's been as high as 8 in the recent past but in those years, the NL didn't have the two best teams.
Division strength:
.541 AL East .511 AL central .496 AL West .495 NL Central .480 NL West .477 NL East

3B Aaron Hill (R) SS Xander Bogaerts (R) RF Mookie Betts (R) 1B Hanley Ramirez (R) CF Jackie Bradley (L) DH Sandy Leon (S) C Bryan Holaday (R) 2B Deven Marrero (R) LF A. Benintendi (L)
Clay Buchholz (R) (4-9, 5.66)
---
Starting to get Papi's replacement familiar with the DH role...
That's a pretty brutal 7-8 combo before Beni. Marrero's OPS in AAA this year is below .500 against both RHP and LHP's. What a horror show at the plate it's been for him.

I promise I won't complain if there are sacrifice bunts in this game, if it's Holaday or Marrero doing it. I wonder why they optioned Hernandez instead of Marrero.

If I just came out of a coma and saw this lineup if assume they were 12 games out, Papi was under the mango tree already and Petey was in traction, but I'd be happy Dumbo hadn't moved any future assets for lame starters obviously with Buck and his 5+era still getting starts.

It takes a village my brother's. When I saw the last name of Boyd,,,i,it conjured up images of days of the Can.....we should've won in '86. Let's keep it rolling....all hands on deck.

This lineup plus Buchholz pitching. We should totally win this game.

Today is not the day to bat Benintendi last.

Today is not the day to bat Benintendi last. Batting behind Marrero must be as painful as position players hitting ninth behind the pitcher in the NL.

Now that's a line up you don't see every day. Suspending my impressions - willing to see how it all plays out. The bright side - lots of options for pinch hitting!

Oh well, I've got meetings most of the afternoon, so I can't watch anyway. That's probably why Farrell did this, knew it was a good day for me to avert my eyes. Totally unrelated note: if you try too hard to bring down the reverse jinx, do you defeat the purpose?

Good idea to give Pedey and Papi days off for an afternoon game following a late night game (thanks Buck and Avila). Good roster management.

What a lineup. I'm sure it follows some weird Farrellian logic but to me it is indistinguishable from the results of a random number generator.

Boyd is terrible vs LHB, maybe Benny gets his first bomb today.

Sorry I know I am supposed to keep this to myself on these threads, and for the last week I have. They have won in spite of him, especially when Mookie bailed him out in first game in Balt, but looking at his lineup today. I am sorry. He is the WORST!
If this teams wins anything they do it with their manager tying one hand behind their back. That is how good this roster is, and just wonder how good it could be if properly managed.

As much as I love talking about how Farrell has no clue what he's doing, I dont think today's lineup is really that big of a deal. He's resting the vets with this weird hitch in the schedule. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here and assume he doesn't have a ton to work with. Was surprised to see Marco sent down with Deven staying up, and moreso with him getting a start today.

This lineup is 90% schedule and 10% Farrell. I'd hold off on the hyperbole for when he brings Abad in with the bases loaded and gives up a grand slam to a RHB to tie the game.

Why was Marrero kept over Hernandez when Ramirez was activated?

And yet none of you said anything about the first of many games of the Sandynator as the Red Sox DH. What a future it's going to be.

I think the idea is, as sibby suggested, to give them a break. They can't play everyone everyday. The players, even the younger ones, will wear down. After he suffered an injury to his toe, Bradley was obviously feeling it so they gave him a day off. That seems to have helped. The older players should get even more time off, I think. This is not an easy road trip, and they need to take some care with these guys. The lineup is nothing to write home about, but it may help keep the roster fresh going forward.

Another way to look at it - this game is 0.6 percent of the season - gives Buccholz a chance to get on track, Marrero a chance to play, and should be entertaining just for it's uniqueness. I am looking most closely on Xander's swings - would love to see him come around again (which I am sure he will, but this is a rather ugly stretch)

I'm actually really excited about this game because I'm going in with zero expectations, so I really can't be disappointed either way. That will happen when you're riding a 6 game winning streak during the toughest part of your schedule. Onward!
