I cringed a little when they reported Beni might go back to a platoon when Chris Young returns. I know he was signed to mash lefties, but Beni absolutely deserves every day at bats

Benintendi is at 117 games on the season and last year was his highest at 119 games played (college plus minors). If you are an optimist like me and expect the Red Sox to get to the World Series, you don't want Benintendi hitting a wall in late September, early October. Also, he's striking out 42.9% of the time against lefties. With time you would hope that will come down, but for now a platoon situation with a guy who mashes lefties is pretty ideal. Really should win 3 out of 4 here. Can't expect Buchholz to give you anything more that a random person off the street would give you (2 IP, 5 ER), but the other three pitchers should be fine and Boston's offense is more than capable of scoring ten a game against this staff. Take the series and keep the bullpen rested for the next series.

We all know Farrell has the midas touch with rookie/veteran platoon situations. We got this.

If you have a chance to go to the Tropicana field in St. Pete, don't. I was there at the end of June to watch the Sox play. It has got to be the worst field ever built. You don't get the feeling of a Major League park. It's more like a gym. The "grass" is blotchy and looks hideous. (it looks better on TV for some reason) There's talk of a new stadium north of Tampa, which is needed, but who knows if it will be built. In the meantime, just avoid this piece of trash.
PS. I predict that within the next 5 years either Tampa or Miami will field their AAA team in Havana. The Dodgers did that in the 50's.

Benintendi can also backup CF and RF. Thats part of the beauty about him coming up.
There is a good scoop in MLBTR about the Blue Jays. Sanchez is being sent down to keep his innings under control and the team could raise their payroll next year with rising attendance and tv numbers.

When Ortiz could use a day off and we're facing a LHP, you could also DH Young for a game. Plenty of PT is there for Benintendi and Young has been flat out tremendous vs LHP. Have to focus on getting every ounce towards every win possible.

If John is going to sit Benintendi for a game, today would be the right time as Snell is the only scheduled LHP in the four game series.
But Benny had a good game yesterday after a mini slump with several Ks. If Young is activated today he could see action in LF or DH.

I've lived in Massachusetts my whole life except for 3 years in my childhood when my family moved 20 minutes outside of Tampa and I have to agree. It's ugly enough on TV, but being there in person really allows you to see what a monstrosity it is.

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt for him to get a break.

Yeah really, no matter how much you like this kid, it's probably in everyone's best interest to take it a little bit easy on him at this point. He's already so far ahead of schedule, there's really no reason to push him. Put him in a position to succeed this year and set himself up for a full time job starting next spring.

Also, not to blaspheme, but Chris Young is very likely a better hitter against LHP right now.

Hard to believe that Yaz turns 77 today. I'm off work today so I'm actually wearing my Yaz T-shirt in his honor. Hard to believe. I remember him when he was David Ortiz's age. As Ortiz nears his final at-bat I wonder how he'll go out. I remember Yaz taking taking three pitches for balls (I think they might have been strikes, but the ump refused to call it) and then popping up to Jack Perconte at 2b on a really high Dan Spilner fastball that Yaz didn't want to walk on. I'm guessing it'll be different for Ortiz because his last AB of the regular season isn't likely to be his final career AB. Still, it's been a long time since there was a major retirement tour on the Red Sox. Guys like Rice, Evans (who actually wound up in Baltimore), Wakefield, and Varitek didn't ride into the sunset of retirement, so this is the first time since Yaz left. To me there's always kind of a connection with Yaz and Ortiz, as different as they were as players, and I found it kind of neat that when the reclusive Yaz was actually in the broadcast booth on NESN for an inning in May during Boggs' number retirement ceremony, Ortiz blasted a homer. (I remember Yaz saying it was gone before O'Brien could declare it gone).

Noticed no one mentioned the anniv of Tony C's beaning the other day. I guess that's one we don't want to remember. Of course next year is the golden 50, so maybe then someone can raise a glass to what could have been.

I always thought they should have retired his number (25). If you remember his stance, his head kind of hung out over the plate. So, it was not so big a surprise. I think after that incident, they added the flap on the helmet. Anyway, it always saddened me.

Of course next year is the golden 50, so maybe then someone can raise a glass to what could have been. Yeah, it was before a lot of this board (myself included) was born. No telling how many homers Tony C would have hit had the beaning never occurred. I conservatively (I think it was conservative) estimated in the low 500s. He was on a path to a HOF career. He was only 22 when he was beaned. 22! And already well established with a HR title to his credit. I mean Mookie and Xander are 23 and just getting established over the past couple of years.. Tony C had already been established for nearly 4 seasons having come up when he was 19 and succeeding - in a pitchers' era no less.

Is it me or does anyone else feel that the pitching matchups actually favor the Rays?
The rays to me strike me as one of those "bad" teams down the stretch, that no team wants to face. They just got their closer back in Boxburger too.

Red Sox played their last 7 against teams with a combined .549 win percentage. Next 16 games will be against teams at .459. Time to not suck.

Win this and we're back in first! Even with the night off, I have a weird feeling that the Jays will find a way to somehow pick up a game here.
