Why do I get the queasy feeling that we may need all of this lead?

Another 8 run inning coming? This one might be.

Is there any one in that bullpen that can throw a shut down inning?

This is moronic. Buchholz finally figures it out and now they're messing him up by putting him back in the pen.

Wow. That may have been a gift strike to get them out of the inning.

I believe it is our illustrious manager who keeps saying these guys respond best to defined roles. Besides which if Buchholz is pitching like he has been his last few starts it is a complete waste to put him in the pen. Wright has never gone this deep in the season and Rodriguez has been a rollercoaster this year. I would've gotten one more start out of him over the weekend and simultaneously retro DL'd Tazawa to his last appearance (i.e before last night), brought up and arm and waited for roster expansion. Then I would've made a decision - whether to have some sort of adaptive 6 man rotation or to put someone else in the pen.

Hey, a relatively carefree inning!!! And it took Abad pitcher to do it.

Hanley hit the ball well tonight, especially on his outs. I think I'm okay with him being DH and the Sox passing on signing a free agent this coming year. I like the idea of him spending 100% of his time focusing on his hitting instead of learning new positions. Apparently he likes the DH role, too.

Sometimes you just step back and look at the overall season stat line, and you see that Rick Porcello has 152 strikeouts and 28 walks. He is a monster.

Another strong start by Porcello. This guy eats innings. The offense seems to perk up when he pitches, too, for no particular reason. Ortiz and Betts make for one powerful middle of the order. I thought Betts might clear 20 homers this season but I didn't see 30 and he's probably got another 6 homers or so in him this season.

Believe I saw that six of Porcello's last seven wins or something like that have come after a Sox loss
It was something along the lines of winning a game after the Sox lose, which when paired with his terrific #'s this season, makes it that much more impressive.
Fangraphs had him as the 8th best pitcher by WAR in the AL going into tonight, with Price 6th. BaseballReference has him just outside the top 8, with Price much further down.
I feel like he hasn't gotten anywhere near national credit for being a legit ace this year, not that it really matters. Maybe it helps? I'm just thrilled because when they extended him I really thought he could be a legit #1 especially when paired with a higher paid guy and the expectations would be lower.
Also....Betts.....

Unsung hero for this game - Sandy Leon - of course he's cooled off a bit - yet with 173 ABs, .353-7-28, WAR of 2.3 - pretty amazing.
Then there is Papi with 42 doubles - most on MLB. And he can't run.

Agreed. .270 20-90 is above average for an MLB DH, we've all just been spoiled by Ortiz. There's no need for the Sox to pay for a DH because to get the equivalent or better of Hanley's numbers we would have to pony up a lot more money. Beltran's season has earned him 2 at 20 mil per year plus, and I can't see him being better than Hanley at his age. Bautista is hitting .229, I'm all set. Encarnacion is the only proven option to actually improve and he'll demand 30 mil a year. I wouldn't pay that.

He's had short stretches of missing a lot of bats in the majors too though. I think he profiles well for the role and that they should try it given the need and his results, but I understand the skepticism totally. 2BB/23K isn't something he did at any point in the majors if I had to guess. I wonder what his pitch mix is like now. Well, he had a 3-game stretch of 4BB/20K near the beginning of last season... ...the game immediately after was 7BB/3K.

Porcello has just been a machine this year. It's not just his overall numbers, but his consistency has been terrific. Even when you can see he's struggling a little, he still puts together a solid game. Kudos to Cherington for getting him and signing him long-term.

Butterfield with a baffling send. I think Ramirez went home because he could not have gotten back to third. In fact if he'd tried to go back he would have run right into Longoria for a tag out and a likely DP on the throw to first.

That was about him sending Sandy when the LF had the ball as he touched third base. He had zero chance.

This starting pitching has been great for the last 2 months. Agreed. This team needs to win the division and they came make a real run in the playoffs. I believe they can compete with anyone in the league in a 5-7 game series but would hate for them to play one game win all.

My only fear is that it puts Shaw/Pablo at our CIF. We can't assume Moncada will be ready by opening day & Travis will need till (probably) the AS break to get in his required work in Pawt.

In 27 starts, Rick Porcello has only given up 5 ER once and 4 ER five times. He has gone less than 6 innings only 3 times.
He's easily the most consistent starter we have and is pitching like a number 1.
