We have to win one this weekend and maintain at least a tie. It would be great to get a 'W' tonight in the opener. AL East is getting tighter with the Yankees playing well as of late. Must be nice to have an elite manager like Girardi.

Am I the only one that thinks EROD is our third best starter at this point?

Am I the only one that thinks EROD is our third best starter at this point? Depends how often the guy from 2 starts ago shows up. If that was only because of him coming off of the DL, then maybe. Pomeranz is pretty darn good himself.

Am I the only one that thinks EROD is our third best starter at this point? I think ERod's A-game is better than Pomeranz's A-game, but we haven't seen enough of "A-game" Erod this season for the Red Sox to make him the #3 starter in a playoff series. At this point, given age/experience level/etc, I assume the Red Sox playoff rotation would be Price, Porcello, Pomeranz (i.e., "The Killer P's") for the first three games, then ERod for a Game 4 (should they reach the Divisional round of the postseason, of course).

Monday, September 15, 2008.
Last time we started a September series against a team we were fighting for the divisional title where the teams were separated by 2 games or less in the standings. We went into Tampa trailing by a game.
No wonder why this is so exciting.
The previous time had been a week previously, where we hosted them trailing by 1.5. We lost both series 2 games to 1, and that cost us the division.
Going back further in time, there's the final weekend series in 2005 where we needed to sweep the Yankees to win the division, but won just 2 of 3 and finished a game back.
When was the last September series when we were protecting a slim lead over a rival? I have to eat lunch first!

Well, I'm not that hungry.
Friday, 9/28/90, we were tied with the Blue Jays and hosted them in a Fenway series. That was the game we went into the 9th trailing 6-5 and won on Jeff Stone's bases-loaded single to the right-center gap. We won 2 out of 3 and eventually the division.
We were tied with the Yankees on 9/9/74 when we hosted them for two games at Fenway. Lost them both and continued the collapse.
There were a bunch of potential series in the epic 1972 race. Let's see ...
Bingo. Thursday, Sept. 21, 1972, we hosted the Tigers in Fenway for a 4-game set, up 1 game. We split the series. And of course we went into Detroit for the final series of the season up 0.5 games and lost the first two games.

Sounds like we need a win tonight boys. ...and girls, right? He's had eruptions like this in the past. When he's hot he's quite capable of carrying a team, so it's nice to see that he located that mojo again.

Wow, I'd noticed "a" difference, but didn't realize it was that huge, or that easily identifiable. That would be huge if he kept it up. Suddenly, he becomes a viable Ortiz replacement, meaning no offseason signing required, provided Benintendi comes back to fill the LF hole. Overall, their offense could reasonably be expected to be just as good next year, if this were a new Hanley baseline (or revival, since his .300/.370/.500 on signing was pretty damn good).

The thing is, do you want to move off Hanley from 1B where he seems comfortable and involved to DH? I'd prefer to stick with what we have and avoid signing a DH but I don't want to fix what ain't broke by moving Hanley to DH.

I'd prefer to stick with what we have and avoid signing a DH but I don't want to fix what ain't broke by moving Hanley to DH. Let me repeat an amazing fact: Hanley has had just 110 PA as a DH over the last three seasons, and he has been 0.9 WAR better than he would have been if he had hit as he does when he has not been the DH. Not 0.9 wins per 150 games, which would be an impressive boost in value, but almost an entire win of value in a bit more than one-sixth of a season. I think he'll be comfortable as Papi's successor. Plus, he'd likely play 1B fairly often vs. LHP. Finally, in this streak Hanley has been a 93 at net table-setting, that is, 7% below average at providing RBI opportunities for the teammates up after him. But that's because he's 130 at knocking them in; compare that to Ortiz and Betts, 134 and 131 on the season. He can be very useful in the lineup next year.

Estrada had 1st inning problems in the first 3 games of his 5 game skid -- 1, 1, and 2 R allowed. Two starts ago he had a good game by results but was so-so via FIP and xFIP. Last start he was great through 4, game up some harder contact in the 5th and got shelled in the 6th.

Dustin Pedroia being not only healthy, but on fire, has been absolutely critical (yet seemingly overlooked) this season. What a table-setter he has been the past few months.
Oh, and Mookie wants that MVP. Yes!

Such a big game and the Jays starting Navarro who might be the worst pitch framer in the league.

Safe to say there's been an edict to be aggressive on the basepaths.

Estrada's season, with his last 5 starts separated. I compiled this several days ago! No comment till late tonight ... GS 19 5 IP/GS 6.5 5.2 BA .180 .308 OBP .253 .375 SA .335 .542 ERA- 68 153 FIP- 89 147 xFIP- 104 123 SIERA 4.21 4.81 BABIP .208 .329 HR/FB .091 .189 LOB% .776 .710 LD% .182 .238 GB% .345 .321 PU% .089 .048 Hard% .326 .326 Pull% .408 .454 OK, I lied ... the more I look at Hard% the more I suspect that BIS has put the separator between Medium and Hard too low. Estrada's ReallyHard% must have skyrocketed, right? Tonight's topic: how predictive is this? Oh, damn, I meant to say: yes, it is.
