The Orioles appears to have more or less conceded the division. Which is to say, they're clearly playing for the WC.
Here's what their rotation looked like last Thursday:
Off Day Gausman vs. Det Miley vs. Det Jimenez vs Det [Gallardo] vs Bos Bundy vs Bos Gausman vs Bos
However, their best pitcher, Chris Tillman, was coming off the DL, and they (correctly, I believe) decided that Gallardo was the guy who should be sent to the pen rather than Miley (who has been unlucky with them, rather than bad). If they were playing for the division, they could have simply brought back Tillman tonight and had their three best pitchers throw against us.
But they also had the off day to give them flexibility as to when Tillman should return. Here's what they did:
Off Day Gausman vs. Det
Miley vs. Det Jimenez on regular rest instead of the extra day
Jimenez vs Det Tillman
Gallardo vs Bos Miley on 7 days rest Bundy vs Bos Gausman vs Bos
That's right, they re-jiggered their rotation so that their ace would face the Tigers and their 5th starter would face us, rather than vice versa.

What looks like another fantastic and intense series on paper.
Price has to set the tone and beat Miley tonight. Price losing to Miley would be a terrible missed opportunity.

Looks like another nice series, our starting pitching has been unreal since the break.

I have to be honest ... I had no idea Wade Miley was on the Orioles now until I saw the probables for this series, completely missed that trade while I was traveling.

Tonight's game is like yesterdays game only reversed. Toronto had to be saying this about their number 1A against our number 5.

Nice road trip (6-3). I did notice that all six Red Sox wins were by three or more runs, and all three losses were by one run. That seems to be a microcosm of the entire season: they need to win games with offense, because they can't win the close, low-scoring games that come down to the bullpens. That's a concern of mine should the Red Sox make the playoffs.
At any rate, a 6-3 road trip is a 6-3 road trip. They need to keep their foot on the gas, though. The schedule doesn't let up at all from here. The pitching advantage would seem to favor the Red Sox in this series, at least for tonight and Wednesday. Two out of three would be perfectly satisfying for me.

Yeap I agree with Nomar, have to win tonight with Price in the matchup that favors the Sox to a tee. The only thing stopping this logic is if Price lays a egg and comes out looking bad too.
Either way win today and split one of the next two games and come out in better shape than you did before the series.

Put the pedal down and stomp on the throat of all the AL East teams. Let's get it.

The schedule doesn't let up at all from here. The pitching advantage would seem to favor the Red Sox in this series, at least for tonight and Wednesday. Two out of three would be perfectly satisfying for me. The three road losses weren't really bullpen related, though. They lost the E-Rod game largely because Hanley's 3-run bomb got blown back into the park and Holt smoked one right at the SS with the bases full. The bullpen pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in the other two losses. They lost all three games because the offense went famine versus feast against the opposing starter. That has not actually been a pattern throughout the season, though, so I think that they just had real good games pitched against them. Winning a low-scoring game when both starters are dealing comes down to "clutch" hitting (including luck) as much or more so than it does relief pitching. We may well have a better set of arms out there now than at any earlier point in the season, and offensive clutch tends to re-set itself in the post-season completely, if it was ever for real. So I think the entire "can't win close low-scoring games" thing has zero predictive power for the post-season. The '04 and '07 teams were both relatively a bit worse Late and Close than otherwise, and the '13 team was nearly as bad as this one.

And the bullpen is looking qualitatively different now than at any time since Koji went down in July and possible even before that (since it now has Ziegler). And, if J Kelly's early run of success proves durable (and I'm very optimistic), they could have an actually good bullpen going into the playoffs. You don't need that many good relief pitchers in the playoffs. The '03 team had three guys in the playoffs who were lights out (Timlin, Embree, Williamson), which made Grady's Decision all the more inexplicable.

The Mongols would decapitate their opponents, clean and guild their skulls, and use them as mugs and bowls.
I expect no less from the Red Sox in this series.

9 pitches, 3 outs. Very nice. Meanwhile, 4 pitches, and 3 baserunners for the Red Sox. Great start. I love meaningful September baseball at Fenway.
