this is such a tragic loss of life. What this young man has been through already in his short life is unimaginable. fleeing Cuba and saving his mom after she fell overboard and going through Tommy John. He was dealt a cruel hand and now this. I want to offer my deepest condolences to his mom and grandmom who must be totally devastated by this. Rest in peace Jose. really going to miss seeing you pitch.

He was everything you could have wanted in a young star in a sport in need of a spark. To think his kid is going to be born in 9 months without a father...brutal, just absolutely brutal. He was the definition of a generational talent- it's going to be awhile before we see anybody quite like him. RIP Jose

They will make a movie about the life of Fernandez, guaranteed. Hollywood movie. Still doesn't help matters though.

I know this goes to the What If's. But, IF he was traded this past offseason which I assume there was talk of it, this would of not happened. Being from South Florida (and my ex-wife being Cuban), this guy was like a god to them. Although not exactly the same, reminds me a bit of Tony C.

RIP
I was going to share the Tulo catch, that's my favorite Fernandez moment. I still remember thinking how ridiculously early he was called up and thinking about how it was a mistake. He sure did prove me wrong there.

The news didn't really hit me until today. I was numb/in shock yesterday. This is just a brutal, brutal loss.

Great video posted there by fenwaythehardway. Sad to see this young man go, who by all accounts and from everything ive read and seen was a really good dude in addition to being an absolute stud on the mound. RIP!

That homer couldn't have been more beautiful - the crying, pure joy in the dugout, the roaring from the seats. MLB, please capture all this emotion and turn our sport into something José would be proud of. He fought for fun and emotion in the game. Make it so.

There's a lot of tragedy in the world, always has been since it's a big world. Same is true now, and we know a lot more about it in real-time these days. It's still very difficult to accept the idea that such a talented 24 year-old is gone. Only recourse is to remember him in all his glory, and that's a bit. For the Marlins' fans, who've had to put up with a lot, this seems horribly unfair. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

The Marlins should retire his number tomorrow and MLB should put him in the HOF. RIP Jose Fernandez. Got half my wish come true with the Marlins retiring his number...Now put him in the HOF MLB...he was getting there anyways if he was still alive...make this your one exception and make it true.

I went to see Snowden this afternoon and I got a whole five minutes into it before something in it reminded me about Fernandez. Fortunately, after a minute or two the movie had me sucked in again, but I think I'll be reminded of it at random for a while longer.

Figured I'd post this here. Just watching some highlights of his final start, and saw his post game interview which I hadn't seen. It's pretty incredible. He waits for all his teammates to high five before he talks, and when he does talk, he credits all his teammates, says how thankful he is to be healthy and how thankful he is for his teammates. Obviously, we didn't know him. But judging by reactions and from what I've seen out of him these past few years, every person should strive to be like the person he was. Every young baseball player should be like him. Enjoy the game, have a blast, and be an incredible teammate, as he clearly was. m.marlins.mlb.com/mia/video/?query=Fernandez+on+his+dominant+outing+vs.+Nats

Good discussion on Fernandez and the HOF in the latest Effectively Wild podcast: www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=30459Gotta say I wasn't in favor of putting him in but Ben and Sam might have turned me around.

i know he wasn't young like Fernandez, but it reminds me of when i was a kid (46 now). I grew up a Phillies fan and I remember crying when I heard that Therman Munson had died in a plane crash.
watching Gordon take a pitch from the right side wearing Jose's helmet, then switching equipment and hitting his first HR of the year was beyond words.

I don't think he was driving the boat. It's still a tragedy whether he did drugs and alcohol or not.

Unless they knew he was driving the boat (which they don't), I was a bit surprised they released this info. While I'm not judging or condoning this, I'm sure a lot of entertainers/athletes we all love and respect use this drug (cocaine).

I don't understand the need to release this information unless it was clear that Fernandez was driving. Bad form.

Speculating, but Fernandez probably best knew how to drive the boat at night because he was familiar with the area. The drinking and drugs prevented him from driving it. They just had no business being out there in that situation. The autopsy report was released because of a lawsuit by some Miami newspaper.

If so, what is the protocol for a positive test? I'm probably mistaken but I think I read recently that MLB doesn't test for "recreational" drugs unless there's a reasonable concern that a player had used it. Obviously MiLB tests for this stuff Regularly, but for some reason I think MLB doesn't. Again, I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I've heard this before Edit: just to say -- no mater what these 3 young men did that night, it doesn't take away from the tragedy of them losing their lives. Tragic? Absolutely. But we'll never know exactly what happened on the boat that night. Wether he/they were intoxicated doesn't matter at this point. They lost their lives and I can only mourn for their friends and families.
