Girlfriend surprised me with tickets to tomorrow nights game, so while I hate to admit it I was rooting for the Yankees to win tonight. Hopefully the Sox can win and clinch the division tomorrow night

Kluber 60 pitches, 4IP. We're working Porcello hard, Cleveland is resting Kluber? I may yet join the fire F bandwagon. Baseball Tonight @bbtn 20m20 minutes ago #Indians starter Corey Kluber has left tonight's start after four innings with right groin tightness. Damn...I almost feel bad for them. Just brutal what their staff has gone through. At least there are only 29 or so Indians fans out there to be disappointed.

CLE wins, TEX down 8-3, end 8th.
Assuming TEX loses:
BOS ---
TEX -0.5 (TEX wins the tiebreaker, either based on division record (if BOS wins less than five of its final six games) or intraleague record (if BOS wins five of six))
CLE -1.0 (BOS wins the tiebreaker based on head-to-head)
TUES: CLE@DET (Clevinger), MIL@TEX (Griffin), BOS@MFY (Price) WED: CLE@DET (McAllister), MIL@TEX (Hamels), BOS@MFY (Buchholz) THURS: CLE@DET (Merritt), TEX off, BOS@MFY (Owens) FRI: CLE@KC (Tomlin/Plutko), TB@TEX (Darvish), TOR@BOS (Porcello) SAT: CLE@KC (Bauer), TB@TEX (Lewis), TOR@BOS (Rodriguez) SUN: CLE@KC (Plutko/Tomlin), TB@TEX (Perez), TOR@BOS (Price)
ALDS begins the following Thursday, with Porcello and Price pitching games 1 and 2.
Edit: Substituted Owens for Pomeranz and revised CLE rotation in light of Kluber injury

You're upset Farrell is trying to win home field advantage for the playoffs? I am willing to trade home field for an appropriately rested price and Porcello. No high pitch count outings. Ok, home field would be nice. Last game is Sun, Oct 2. First game for Sox would be Thurs., Oct 6. If Sox clinch in NY, starters will be on modified spring training innings or complete rest. How much rest does he need?

How fantastic! The magic number is down to 1 as the Red Sox control their destiny having the opportunity to spill at champagne at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 2004 (Ok, technically that was a different Yankee Stadium).
The irony is that the Red Sox have been winning all these close games the past 11 games, the games they couldn't win before but haven't really had anything in the way of total blowout/laughers. Kind of funny how this all switched up suddenly. Hope the Red Sox keep winning these well pitched low scoring games.
So now the Red Sox have the #1 seed in the AL? Is that a good thing necessarily? At this point, given Cleveland's pitching injuries, I think I'd rather see the Red Sox play the Indians, although I worry that Andrew Miller could be a big factor for Cleveland if the Sox do play Tito's team.
Amazing - when Hanley took Betances deep, that ignited the fuse. And it's still going...hope it takes them thru the post-season.

I never root for the Yankees...it doesn't matter what the matter is!!! If it's to the benefit of the Red Sox, I'll hold my nose and root for the Skankees. Besides, it was nice to see Tommy Layne contribute to the Red Sox' cause this season.

People talk about resting players, but if Baltimore takes it to Toronto and it's a dogfight for both wildcard spots the last weekend, protocol says the Sox need to make a good-faith effort against Toronto. No totally AAA lineups.

Red Sox have three days off between the end of the regular season and Game 1 of ALDS. I'm not too concerned about rest. When you have a chance to lock up home field throughout the playoffs, you go for it. That, to me, is more important than getting everyone one day of rest.

People talk about resting players, but if Baltimore takes it to Toronto and it's a dogfight for both wildcard spots the last weekend, protocol says the Sox need to make a good-faith effort against Toronto. No totally AAA lineups. It may not just be protocol. First, you're probably still playing for first seed. And you want the Jays to have to use Sanchez on the last day of the season, forcing them to use Liriano (or Stroman) in a W/C game versus Tillman. They're clearly the second best team in the league and an early exit from the playoffs would both expose the cruelty of the current system and be really good for us. Toronto will have the tiebreaker unless they get swept by Baltimore ... so some scenarios: O's sweep Toronto. They're up 2 games going into the final weekend and have the tiebreaker. We beat the Jays Friday or Saturday, it renders Sunday moot for them unless the Tigers are breathing down their tail. Very long odds that Sunday matters. O's take 2 of 3. This is what we should root for; they go into their final series tied. Unless Toronto gains a game on Baltimore (in NYC) on Friday and Saturday, they have to use Sanchez on Sunday. Best case scenario is that they have to use him and finish 1 game back of the O's anyway. Jays take 2 of 3. Now they're up 2 with the tiebreaker. Sunday is moot unless they lose both Friday and Saturday while the O's win. Long odds, but real motivation for us on Saturday if the Sox and O's both win on Friday. Meanwhile, the Tigers will be rooting for a Blue Jays sweep, but if the O's win tomorrow, for whoever wins Wednesday to win Thursday.

Guys. Tommy Layne got a save against the Blue Jays heart of the order. For those not looking at the game log, he entered a 7-3 game after a Betances meltdown (walk, error by Betances, wild pitch, walk) with the bases full and nobody out, got Donaldson to fly to short right, walked Encarnacion, then gave up an RBI single to Navarro. He then got Martin 1-2, and Tulo to foul to left. Jays Win Probability went from 91.1% (up 3-2 with 1 out and no one on in the top of the 9th, before Teixeira took Grilli deep) to 1.5% to 32.9% when they made it 7-5, to zero. Delicious loss.

So, if the Orioles win tonight, and the Sox beat the Yankees, Sox clinch division and eliminate the Yankees from the post season.

Agree with that. Donaldson clearly wasn't hit intentionally and the Jay's retaliated by intentionally hitting Headley. Even though only Yanks were thrown out, this was clearly the doings of the Jays. The umpire should have put an end to it by throwing Happ out after hit Headley. The first pitch was behind Headley and Happ finally hit him with the second pitch. When it's that intentional, you don't need to issue warnings. If he would have thrown Happ out, the MFYs probably don't hit Smoak. Unbelievable that the Blue Jays would get caught up in this crap in the midst of fighting for a wild card spot.

I'd prefer the 2 seed, I'd rather play Cleveland than Toronto, but it's not like home field and playing a team that burned their best starter is bad.

Amazing - when Hanley took Betances deep, that ignited the fuse. And it's still going...hope it takes them thru the post-season. Sorry, but that pattern can hardly be said to exist. Given the random nature of one-run games (see this year's edition of the Rangers as an example) the BP Game-Results graphic looks like a bunch of coin-tosses. That link is very nicely visual with pop-ups that show the differential as you move your mouse across. I really don't see much imbalance through the season. There's a lot of stuff that floats around in all of our heads that may not accurately reflect reality. I try to cross-check those thoughts against data when I get them.

Pomerantz not starting Thurs due to forearm soreness. Owens will get the start.
Tim Britton @timbritton 2m2 minutes ago Pomeranz will not start Thursday because of forearm soreness. If he pitches again this season, it will be out of the bullpen.
