I think that they should hang in there with Owens in terms of continued development - he's got the stuff (not quite orthodox for someone of his size) - Pomeranz-ish - but perhaps because he is home-grown, I'd be inclined to root for him making good...and packaging off Pomeranz or returning him to the pen (can you tell I am not particularly a fan of the Pom?). He just needs to be able to find the plate more consistently. Aside from the walk, looking fine tonight. I definitely agree on Owens, I believe at some point he figures it out. His changeup can be pretty awesome. Sadly if owens ever blossoms into a valuable major league starter I don't think it will be with the sox. I just hope if/when they trade him he brings back some value.

Well, it's baseball. And it's the Red Sox Yankees. But... Thank goodness for multitasking! Game 159 will not be one of those that we look back on for deeper meaning!

Nice start by Owens and nice by Farrell taking him out before Sanchez had another crack at him. No need to risk anything there.

Just read this on ESPN (via Scott Lauber)
"Yoan Moncada left the Red Sox today and flew to Fort Myers to prepare for the Arizona Fall League, the team announced. He's expected to play third base in Arizona. In eight big-league games, the 21-year-old top prospect went 4-for-19 with one walk and 12 strikeouts, including nine in a row."

I know this is a nothing game but I hate getting swept in NY, esp after losing two games that should've been Ws.

I get resting guys, and I get seeing who can help in the postseason. But this is brutal. Painful to watch. The kind of game that makes one wish for forfeits.

Rough outing for Scott....too bad. Let's see what Taz has (or hasn't). Even O'Brien and Remy are having issues making this interesting.

Is meaningless baseball typically so joyless? Boring? Sox hitters seem uninterested. Sox pitchers emulating last night's Kimbrel's lost plate act. Yuck.

Nothing says entering the playoffs quite like getting swept by the Yankees.

This version of the Red Sox certainly does things their own particular way...part delight, part confounding. Tonight was simply uninspired.

I know we don't EVER want to be swept by the MFY, but right now i'm not concerned about it. Also, i'm not concerned what seed they are.

A few thoughts on borderline playoff roster pitchers...Scott looked a bit flustered. Hembree wasn't very sharp. Tazawa actually did pretty well. Interesting that A-BAD didn't get a shot.
...and with that - my rookie status is gone - not easy to do on a night with little of interest to comment on!

Nothing says entering the playoffs quite like getting swept by the Yankees. The 1986 Red Sox got swept in a four game series with the Yankees to end the season. On the one hand, if you were tell me today that the 2016 Red Sox would lose the seventh game of the World Series, I'd actually be a pretty happy camper. On the other hand, if it were anything like 1986 . . .

On the other hand, tonite's team was stacked w. LHB against a good lefty. Hembree faced consecutive LHB, Scott faced consecutive RhB and got hung out to dry. Not smart.

After yesterday's Kimbrel meltdown I'm not even bothered by the sweep.

I am very bothered by the sweep and the lack of intensity on the field.
Keeping your foot on the gas pedal is easier than taking it off and then putting it back on again.

I am very bothered by the sweep and the lack of intensity on the field. Keeping your foot on the gas pedal is easier than taking it off and then putting it back on again. I'm willing to bet that there's so little historical justification for this claim that it's laughable. In fact, I don't even see how you could come to that conclusion via anecdote. Quick, what's the famous team that played poorly in the first ten innings after clinching the pennant, and then was surprisingly poor in the post-season? You just seem to be projecting a personal psychological quirk onto an entire profession. Personally, I might make the precise opposite assertion about sustained intensity. (And that it's easier to step on and off the gas is true of actual driving. At least at my age -- I get shin splints holding it down!) Meanwhile, home field advantage over the Indians is still at stake. Sox lead by 1/2 game plus the tiebreaker with 3 left, with the Indians going home from KC to play the Tigers on Monday only if it matters to the W/C. if it matters to seeding or the WC (never believe just once Internet source!) If they gain a game on us this weekend and lead us by 1/2 game, we have to hope that the Tigers (playing in Atlanta) pick up one or two games on either the Blue Jays or Orioles, making the Monday game necessary -- and that the Indians then lose it.
Coin flip odds if there's a Monday game:65.6% gain advantage w/o Cleveland game 162 11.7% gain via Cleveland loss Monday 11.7% lose advantage via Cleveland win Monday 10.9% lose w/o Cleveland game 162 If there's no Monday game, then it's just 65.6% versus 34.4%.Most of our 65.6 to 77.3% is from the tiebreaker rather than the 1/2 game lead.

The odds are high but I just have trouble seeing it... This team looks content with the 3 seed. Do you see Price, ERod or Porcello going deep into any of these games? I also think they're going for rest vs home field.

Reset for Friday (to be moved to TOR series thread, when formed):
BOS has clinched the AL East and, with it, a top three seed. TEX has tiebreakers over BOS/CLE, BOS has tiebreaker over CLE. TEX's magic number to clinch #1 seed is 1. BOS's magic number to clinch #2 seed is 3.
TOR(@ BOS) and BAL(@ MFY) are tied for the wild card spots, with DET(@ ATL) 1.5 games back and SEA(vs. OAK) 2 games back. (BTW, TOR has tiebreakers over BAL/DET, SEA has tiebreakers over TOR/BAL, BAL has tiebreaker over DET, DET has tiebreaker over SEA)
FRI: CLE@KC (Merritt), TB@TEX (Darvish), TOR@BOS (Porcello) SAT: CLE@KC (Bauer), TB@TEX (Lewis), TOR@BOS (Rodriguez) SUN: CLE@KC (Tomlin), TB@TEX (Perez), TOR@BOS (Price) MON: CLE@DET (TBD, only if affects playoff spot or seeding)
WC game is Tuesday (currently BAL@TOR), and ALDS begins Thursday, with Porcello and Price pitching games 1 and 2 vs. CLE, most likely.

Those of you complaining about last night's game seriously need perspective. Getting young players some reps, veterans some rest, and even Hembree a few looks at LHB is far more important than getting a win. Getting the top seed would be nice, but not worth overextending for.
The 2000 Yankees clinched early. They went 3-15 in their last 18 games, and lost their last seven straight. That included consecutive sweeps by Tampa Bay (a 69-82 that year) and Baltimore (74-88).
