Patriots shut out and the the Red Sox are getting No Hit! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? July 20, 1958. First game of a doubleheader. I was in the park, sitting in the right field bleachers with my father and Uncle Bob that day -- the last time the Sox were no-hit in Fenwway Park. I was only 10 years old, but I can remember lots of details from that game. Jim Bunning almost gave up a HR to Gene Stephens as the leadoff batter in the first inning, but Al Kaline reached into the stands to pull in his fly ball near the Pesky Pole. Ted was the last batter in the 9th, and hit a long fly to right. The crowd initially roared, thinking Ted had hit one to break up the no-hitter, but Ted slammed his bat down, and the crowd went quiet while the ball was still in the air. Ted knew he hadn't gotten enough of it. Kaine caught the ball 5 feet in front of the fence to end the game. I love this story, and how it relates to the history of Fenway Park and all the games and fans that have watched. Sorry you saw them get no-hit, but thanks for sharing this story and your time with your family at the park.

This weeks games have meant nothing. You can argue that it doesn't bode well for the playoffs, but you have no way of proving that. They took care of business early. Personally, I would rather have that then sweat out the last games fighting for a wild card spot. It'll be a new season come next week. Hope the boys can play to their talent level, if they do, everything will be taken care of.

I swear to God, as Hanley came up I said to my casual-fan roommate, "It's actually not unusual for a no-hitter to be broken up by a home run. I would bet that it happens more often ..." I was interrupted by Hanley.

Kind of amazing that this is the first red sox team with 3 30 homerun hitters

KC has a runner on 1st with one out in the bottom of the 9th. CLE leads by one.
EDIT: Runner caught stealing, two outs.
EDIT #2: CLE wins.
If BOS wins, CLE plays tomorrow. If not, see ya Thursday in Cleveland.

Kind of amazing that this is the first red sox team with 3 30 homerun hitters Hmm ..... didn't know that (I assume you've done the necessary research). But thinking about it -- RF is tough for lefties; lot of room out there unless you hit it right down the line. And the LF wall takes away as much or more than it gives, HR wise.

Good by homefield.
Screw this bullpen.

To be honest, the fans were excited for Bunning, because it wasn't as if he was hurting the chances of a contending team. Sox won the 2nd game of the doubleheader that day, 10-5. Winning pitcher: Ike DeLock.

Pretty encouraging to see Pomeranz out of the pen gunning in the heat at 95.

We can't let HF advantage come down to Mookie annihilating a ball right at Tulo and Martin getting a a 2-out swinging bunt.
I have to look up our BABIP on line drives starting with the Yankees series. It's low, I bet.

Wow. 95, 95, 95. Here's a thought: DPom instead of Kimbrel?
I know: 1 batter. But I'm still a big fan of his stuff, even if he's had some rough outings.

I was just going by what Dave O'Brien said on the broadcast after Hanley's HR. Shoddy work by the NESN research dept. Edit: My bad. I guess the stat is first Sox team with 3 30HR/100RBI. Boomer missed the century mark that year.

Pom as the 2nd or 3rd lefty out of the pen wouldn't be a bad option. Showed some good stuff today. Bullpen will be interesting to see who's selected

Texas and Cleveland did what they needed the last couple of series to get into better playoff positioning. Too bad the Red Sox couldn't. They just really looked deflated the last few games. No energy. No urgency. So to Cleveland we go, stumbling on the way there.
Hopefully this team can wake up. The team I've watched the last six games doesn't have a prayer against any playoff opponent.

Went from a juggernaut team to a team limping into the postseason. At least Cleveland's SP is beaten up.

The past page on this thread is just flat out sad. I understand that the gameday threads are for overreactions, but man, come on you guys. I hope someone pulls up this thread during the playoffs and eviscerates those people who posted in the last 12 hours. Embarrassing. (Written before the game but not posted!) He has gone from 70th percentile for Zone% (with the Braves 2012-14) to 20th. That's massive. They're reacting to an extreme example of a very serious season-long problem.

From the end of the long winning streak, pretty uninspired play. Just good enough to be close in most of the games, not good enough to pull out most of the close games.
Yes, maybe they can turn it on again - but this has been a very, very odd season of streaks.

Forget what Cleveland does. Going into the postseason losing 5 of 6....is so god damn typical of this team. rofl, yeah. Another typical post from you. If they win the World Series, are you going to complain about how they won?

I'm not all that worried about their play the last 2 series. Some of you guys make it sound like they're entering the postseason sleepwalking. They played fine today and put up a good fight. I also loved seeing the look on Pedroia's face as TOR celebrated. Even though there were still things to play for this last week, you cant compare their motivation now and a week from now. Would have been nice to force CLE to play another game and maybe get HFA, as well as forcing TOR to go to BAL for the WC game, but, oh well. Time for playoff baseball.
