A lot of Red Sox roots/pedigree amongst the final four teams (save perhaps Toronto). I don't think that's happenstance, but instead says something positive about the organization.

Eh, let's pretend Cherington has already started and had anything to do with this team.

In comes the closer, Clayton Kershaw At which point my Comcast service failed completely, because of an outage in my area. Just as Kershaw was finishing his warmups and Murphy was about to step in. Of course, I discovered that this morning, because I was watching the game on delay, and when it failed, so did my DVR playback ability. My efforts to watch and score every pitch of the post-season (an annual goal that I've never managed) were done in early by a wrong guess as to which station would carry the start of the first Cu bs game if it started before the Giants / Nat game finished. But I would have been just a half-inning short it weren't for other Comcast programming bugs (mostly, their great "Auto Extend" feature didn't work for the games on FS1), which wiped out another 4 innings here and there. But by sheer luck I caught all but one PA of the last two games of the Cubs DS, and I suppose I was lucky that the outage last night didn't happen when the score was still 1-0.

That was an amazing game. If you like baseball, you certainly didn't mind watching four and a half hours of great, great baseball. And it was, I think, the third-best game of the last four! And the fourth best was a 1-run game that was decided on the last at-bat. In 2013 and 2014 I grabbed FG's calculation of the average LI and Win Expectancy for every post-season game, and added the total of the absolute value of WPA for every play to get a measure of the swinginess and drama. Of course, the latter does not include the swings created by great fielding plays. But still, the three mesaures create a good snapshot of a game's quality. I think I'll update that for this year and then add 2015 at some point.

uh...
Bob Ryan @globebobryan And anyone citing the totally bogus nonsense known as WAR is eliminated from any serious baseball discussion.

Lindor is better than Bogaerts. I tried to lie and tell myself all year that Bogey was the best shortstop in the league but he is not.

Great win by Cleveland. Rooting for a Cubs vs Indians World Series. Our former manager vs our former GM. Both teams with long droughts. Good baseball.

Great win by Cleveland. Rooting for a Cubs vs Indians World Series. Our former manager vs our former GM. Both teams with long droughts. Good baseball. That's what I'm hoping for. Meanwhile in the ALCS, we're watching two teams (and none of them were the Red Sox unfortunately) that got to celebrate a victory with champagne at Fenway squaring off against each other. I was hoping for a Washington/Cubs NLCS because Washington hasn't won a pennant since 1933 when they were the original AL Washington Senators - now Twins, while of course everybody knows the Cubs haven't won a pennant since 1945. Now it's the Dodger/Cubs and Indians/Jays meaning somebody will win a pennant and/or World Series for the first time in at least 20 years. Hope it's the Indians and Cubs.

Lindor is better than Bogaerts. I tried to lie and tell myself all year that Bogey was the best shortstop in the league but he is not. I don't disagree, but Frankie is a super streaky hitter like X is. Lindor is by far the better defender but I'd give X the edge at the plate.

Lindor is better than Bogaerts. I tried to lie and tell myself all year that Bogey was the best shortstop in the league but he is not. Neither is Lindor. The following is pretty incredible. This is bWAR per 650 PA for SS age 23 and younger. Name Age Tm PA W/650 G Drafted Top BA Rank Manny Machado 23 BAL 696 6.3 157 1/3 11 Carlos Correa 21 HOU 660 5.8 153 1/1 4 Corey Seager 22 LAD 687 5.8 157 1/18 1 Francis. Lindor 22 CLE 684 5.4 158 1/8 9 Javier Baez 23 CHC 450 4.9 142 1/9 5 Trevor Story 23 COL 415 4.9 97 1/45 96 Addison Russell 22 CHC 598 4.7 151 1/11 3 Tim Anderson 23 CHW 431 4.2 99 1/17 45 Xander Bogaerts 23 BOS 719 3.3 157 3/86* 2 *His bonus translated by slot recommendation. I've included Machado and Baez for obvious reasons. The only reason Machado was never a top 10 prospect is that he made MLB too quickly. Based on the above, it would be hard to argue that Xander is better than Machado, Correa, Seager, or Lindor. But Xander had 3.6 bWAR on June 19 -- an 8.6 pace (which I happened to post about at the time) -- and was 0.1 the rest of the way. That's kind of astounding. He went from being a former #2 prospect in MLB who had become the second best player in baseball for the first 40% of the season, to replacement level for the remaining 60%. To me eyes, it was largely fatigue-driven. A combination of better off-season conditioning and more rest should put him right back into that conversation. I think that's 2 or 3 WAR sitting right there to help offset the Ortiz absence.

Love it, Cubs steal a run. Lester works the walk. He'll never be Babe Ruth but he's learning how to help the team at the plate.

In the past the Cubs would have wilted once Gonzo got that game tying hit. Not these Cubs. Hope I'm not jinxing them, but they are playing the way a winning team does. This team has IT. They're not only good, but when the game gets tight or they're down they battle back. I think the Cubs are going to win the World Series this year. They're playing like they're on a mission.

Time for me to eat some crow folks: I believe the Cubs could win the World Series. I never thought a Joe Maddon managed team could do it, but there you have it. The players look focused, ready and every random bounce has gone their way. Great job he's done.
A Francona vs. Epstein would be a pretty epic WS. I hereby dub that the Beer & Chicken Bowl or Carl Crawford Series.

I still like the Dodgers. The Cubs still have to face the two headed monster of Hill and Kershaw.

Maddon vs. Francona? How about Roberts vs. Francona. That sounds better to moi.

As far as conspiracies go, that's pretty amazing. I'm not even sure what he's implying? That it's a computer simulation?
