I'm guessing that if they claimed Selsky it's because they think he's better than Blash. Both were available at the same time. I can't remember ever having seen Selsky play so I'd only be checking the stat line (which is solid). I'm actually pretty happy with the outfield depth now. Even if Brentz were to get claimed, they have Young and Holt on the bench, Selsky in the minors with options, Castillo in an emergency or if he plays better. Plus their right fielder is a good center fielder and their left fielder could do it in a pinch. Well, for what it's worth, we don't know if Blash had been put on waivers yet. At that point they had 2 more days. SD might be hoping to trade Blash for a C- prospect rather than put him through waivers. I also think saying Benintendi could play CF "in a pinch" doesn't give him enough credit. He wasn't going to be a gold glover, but he can field that position capably. In fact, I almost wonder if something happened to JBJ if he wouldn't be the one to move rather than Betts, who's now comfortable in RF (plus RF's importance at Fenway). But your point stands that you only really need corner OF depth on the bench.

OTOH, in that hypothetical situation I totally expect Farrell to denounce Chris Young replacement CF-er

FWIW, Selsky has posted WRC+ of at least 102 at every level in his professional career, save for a 99 AB sample in his first taste of AA in 2013 (WRC+ 45).

I don't know how old you are but for those who are, remember how people felt about Nomar in his first couple years. Very similar to Mookie. Lots of things can happen.

Nomar was a weird situation though. He ended up breaking his wrist and lost a year of production because of that. He also had a rare disease in his hamstrings that wouldn't let him regenerate muscles in his hamstrings later in his career.
Nomar was really talented, probably the best short career I'll see in my lifetime but there's no doubt that Mookie could end up being the better overall player very soon. I'll still say Mookie is the better overall player because of defense too. Nomar was sporadic defensively but definitely flashy.

Blash was outrighted yesterday, so unless my timeline is off he has to have been on outright waivers at the time they claimed Selsky? Or am I missing a possibility here? (Legitimately asking here - very possibly I'm misunderstanding something in the rules).

Nomar probably took steriods because that's the era he played in but it's unfair to assume that his degenerative disease is linked to steriods without any medical proof. Don't know why this would be thrown out there.

Boston Red Sox Signed: RHP Jorge Hernandez To bolster their system depth, the Red Sox signed 26-year-old Cuban righthander Jorge Hernandez, who has not pitched regularly in his homeland since 2012. He is listed at 6-foot-3 and 249 pounds. Read more at www.baseballamerica.com/minors/minor-league-transactions-jan-21-27/#htRsKz0isxOw2zOe.99(Strikes me as a guy like Watanabe a few years ago who they bring into camp and is probably getting cut, but looking's free.)

Well it's the players right to go to arbitration, so he really isn't setting any precedent here. Abad (and his agent) shouldn't know or care about Henry's good track record of avoiding arbitration hearings. Abad just wants to be paid for his total production over the course of last year. I don't really blame the Sox for not wanting to pay that because Abad struggled mostly the whole time he was in Boston last year after he was traded to Boston.
I don't see Abad having a great case of winning. He should of met in the middle somewhere at 2.2 or 2.3 million (somewhere in there) and the Sox probably would of gave that to him. I don't blame Abad for wanting more money because relievers are so volatile to begin with. They make a whole lot less and they need to fight for each nickel they earn.
It'll be interesting to see who wins the hearing. Each side has their own good reasoning to go to the hearing. It really took a weird case like this one to go to arbitration with the Sox.
I'll also add that from the Sox side, they probably were more willing to go to arbitration for 2 reasons mostly- 1) The Sox are looking to save each dollar against the luxury tax threshold this year. 2) Abad is in his last year of arbitration and the Sox have no interest in extending him any further.
You probably won't ever see this happen to guys like Benintendi, Betts, Xander, or JBJ because they would have interest in extending them and won't fight over a million dollars with these players in arbitration to ruin their relationship in extension talks.

Even given a decent overall year, it's unusual for a player to file for more than a 100% raise. I doubt if he'll win and I don't view that as being reasonable, especially in light of a .3 fWAR. I'm guessing (pure guess) that this is agent driven, I'm not familiar with his agent, Barry Paver (Magnus Media) but there are a lot I'm not familiar with.
Lol, if I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

This happens all the time in the players last year of arbitration when they have overall decent years. It's not like Abad was getting paid all that much in 2016 to begin with, so a 100% increase wasn't all that unreasonable to start.

Do you by any chance know what they had ABad at for projected arbitration salary ?

Do you by any chance know what they had ABad at for projected arbitration salary ? Well I'm not sure where else to look up but MLBtraderumors and their website has Abad making 2 million even in arbitration, so they would probably side with the Sox as having a good shot at winning the arbitration hearing too.

I'll also note one last thing about Abad and this arbitration hearing. I doubt the Sox hold any ill will towards Abad. In fact, I can see Dave Dombrowski walking in and saying good luck to Abad and tell him that they won't hold any grudges toward Abad after the hearing. Dave Dombrowski is a players GM, he tends to relate to all the players he has on his roster.
If the Sox trade Abad, it's because he isn't performing by the end of April or May. Not because of arbitration.

I'll have to admit that because of the Sox record in the past, I haven't looked too closely at what happens. That being said, it seems like a process that either gives a player a standard 20% raise or in the case of a good season, pays the player what he was worth the past year. I know it's a crappy measurement but Fangraphs has him at $2.1m value for his season, far closer to the Sox number.
I really also don't know how the front office will react to the situation. Time will tell but there is a precedent being set here which will be viewed in the future by other players and agents. It's not like Abad came up through the system and played his career here.
ADD: More of a case of good business sense than bad feelings.

I don't want to repeat points but I don't think there's any precedent being set at all. The player is just using his rights to get every dollar possible and the Sox are in one of those rare cases of wanting to save every dollar possible in a year where they need to stay under the CBT and not being able to come to a agreement before a hearing.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox never go to a arbitration hearing ever again in Henry's time in Boston.

The Sox are about $10m under the cap, $700,000 difference is not a major sticking point. I believe it's more a case that they just don't think he's worth $2.7m and aren't in the business of giving away money.
