At least he's got his gloves up and on his toes. The hand speed is...well at least he has his hands up. He's certainly no match for you just yet.

Only negative thing about that photo is that it looks like he still might have his heart set on playing in the WBC.

I think you might be confused with them not giving him permission to play winter ball. They haven't told him he can't play in the WBC, as far as I know, although I'm sure they'd prefer he not play. As for me, I get why he wants to. On the other hand, that's not necessarily the best decision for a guy who technically has to win the 3B job, and I'm sure the Sox would prefer to get their eyes on him in camp during that time.

Why would playing in the WBC and getting ABs against live pitching be bad? I see a pitcher not going for obvious reasons but if Pablo is ready to be swinging the bat etc then I'm all for him getting the looks versus live pitching.

it will be very interesting to see what the sox will do IF panda does not get off to a good start. They still have lots of money invested, but the money did not stop them last year, or with craig or Castillo. I know by reading up above and posts last summer that there are a lot of people who would get rid of him in a minute. In great shape but being out of the game for a long time and getting older, he may be going up against the incoming tide.

You are probably right on part one and I agree on part 2. I also don't believe the Sox have given him permission yet, that would have to depend on their medical opinion, specifically if he's ready for a full fast ramp up. I was also surprised to see in one write-up that Sandy Leon has decided not to play. At one point he was listed on the VZ roster.

Holt is only useful because of his versatility. As an everyday third baseman, he's just a bad baseball player.

Can't really tell if he kept the weight off with the loose shirt he has on. I'd say he most likely he kept if off but he gains weight almost as fast as he loses it.
The best part of that was seeing him swing with his shoulder injury last year.

From the right side, no less. Smooth swing, crisp sound off the bat. He would make such a difference in 2017 that we can only hope he and the team hold it all together.

Can someone explain to me this right handed bat obsession? All our right handed bats are back. We lost the monster from the left side.

It would be nice if we had a 3B who can hit LHP better than a pitcher. Yes it would. But it's a specific flaw on the team that's sort of systematic of an around-the-league weakness at the position. Are there a lot of backup third basemen out there who hit lefties significantly better than Josh Rutledge does? The Sandoval/Rutledge is a good bet to hit lefties better than Shaw/Hill did last season on a 93-win team. I think the bigger question will be whether the improvement on offense is more than it will give back defensively. It's a marginal improvement at a position that needed exactly that.

I agree it's not a huge concern. It would just be nice if Pablo can be better vs. LHP because we know Farrell will play him too much even if he can't. That's all I really meant. He was pretty brutal in 2015. I hope his shoulder had something to do with it.

Never a problem having too many good players, hoping for the best here. But there's a real chance we have no good player at 3B between Sandoval, Holt, and the minor leaguers.
