Jared_Carrabis: Source: Jason Varitek has signed a new 2-year contract to remain with the Red Sox. More hands on with players, less of a front office role.

A Brian Bannister + Jason Varitek future is something I could really dig.

I doubt that he's anywhere close to being the same beautifully insane guy as Bannister, but Varitek had such a great baseball mind as a player that I really doubt having him in the team isn't helpful in some way.

Hopefully Varitek is still young enough to not be so set in his ways that he won't listen to anyone on how the game is evolving. If he's open to it, he'll be a great manager.

That was my thought also. He evolved a lot as a player and, unless he's changed a bit, that should be useful in this new role.

Bannister isn't "beautifully insane", he's just a guy who understands contemporary pitching analysis.

It's good news to me. Especially they have to be careful with the three catchers they have.

There are a handful of prior catchers that are some of the best managers in the league. Matheny, Maddon, Bochy, Yost, Girardi & maybe to a lesser extent, Ausmus, Scioscia & Kevin Cash. I can easily see Tek & David Ross becoming good managers (if they wanted to). I believe Farrell is the only former pitcher that is currently a manager. A Bannister/Tek may be a perfect analytical/feel combination.

I really hope one of Varitek/Cora is the next manager of the Sox. I mean sure, they could be bad and not follow some simple obvious guidelines (JF...), but I think both would be more than capable. Cora seems to be closer/pushing for it more, and I'm not sure if Varitek has expressed the desire to do the gig full time, though this apparent involvement leads me to think he's moving in that direction
