Sale to BOS for Moncada, Kopech, Basabe, Diaz

So we get to keep Benintendi, who is still technically a rookie and could easily be considered the best prospect in baseball. Devers, who was great from June through the end of the season. Groome, who probably should have been the #1 pick in the draft. Plus we still have guys like Travis, Dalbec and Swihart. I don't see how anyone could hate this deal.

Good trade! Kopech hurts. But i have very little faith in Moncada

This just makes me like the Pomeranz trade even less now. Yes. And now Pomeranz's value diminished - esp with Pads deception.

Well, on the bright side, once we get past the trade deadline next year and he deals Groome and Devers for somebody (I think those two are "blocked", right?), DD will not really have anything left to deal away.

This is also a good way of ensuring that Chavis remains a top 10 organizational prospect.

The trade is fair, but the system also stinks right now. There's no other way around it. With all due respect since they're both talented dudes, Josh Ockimey and Michael Chavis are not top 10 prosepcts in a good system.

I would assume Buchholz gets dealt now for a 1B or DH

We need our first rounder.

Agreed. Fair enough deal. At least until Derelict Dave signs Sale to an 8 year, 248 million dollar extension.

Devers will be a top 10 prospect and Groome top 50. Those 2 alone and the fact that they are still at least 1-2 years away mean that the system is still very talented. I still think the Sox have an average farm.

Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick 1m1 minute ago While several reports say Sale to #Redsox trade is done, one source says the sides are "still working'' through some final details.
Duh Duh Duh
Still time for Devers and Groome to be tossed in just to make all of you angrier

Who else thinks that Henry, et al., are trying to win (or at least get to) the world series before selling the team?

I'd like to remind everyone you don't win anything by having a top farm system. I'd also like to remind everyone that the point of prospects is to bring value to the major league team. I'd also like to remind people this is CHRIS SALE. You realize how good he is? Seriously... guy is a beast. Put him in a 7 game playoff series and your favored to win 3 games almost automatically.

Haven't been following baseball much recently. First reaction is it's not a bad trade (probably a good one even though I'd like to see these players develop), but I'm generally against the team building philosophy that DD has employed since joining the team. He's able to make these trades because BC hoarded the assets for him. He won't have that luxury in the future.

So the rotation now has:
1) Porcello (2016 Cy young) 2) Sale (2016 all star game starter, five time all star) 3) Price (five time all star, 2012 cy young winner) 4) Stephen Wright (2016 all star) 5) Pomeranz (2016 all star)
So the guy who had the worst 2015 is David Price?

Fun fact: four starters have been all-stars - Price, Buchholz, Sale and Wright. Porcello has never been a all-star but he won the CYA last year.

I still think the Sox have an average farm. More importantly: does it matter for the moment? Obviously it is better to have good system than not, but if you consider that they have young catchers, Peddy at 2B for years more, X at SS, Benny, JBJ, Betts in OF -- fact is, part of the reason the system is weak is that it has already paid of for this generation. Imagine a top-5 prospects of Betts Bogaerts Benintendi Devers Groome Hard to complain. So now the issue shifts to locking in at least those top 2 guys to extensions. If Devers can pay off in 2 years, Sox are young and strong. And in the 4-5 years when those guys are locked up and the heart of the team, you try to rebuild for the next wave.

Always thought that Rafa is better than Moncada so I'm fine with this...'till Dumbrowski makes another trade.

Lots to process today.
I'm a prospect watcher, and that side of me is saddened by this move, just as it was saddened by the Espinoza and Margot departures. There is little in sports that I enjoy more than watching a kid turn raw tools into stardom. So there's a part of me that is bitter about the fact that we may see these kids ascend in a different uniform.
At the same time, it's clear that Dombrowski is going for it now, and I acknowledge the balls and focus it takes to put this together. This rotation looks great. This offense, assuming that we plug the hole we have at 3B, looks great. This bullpen looks great. On paper, this looks like a complete team, with the depth necessary to perform at an elite level even through the inevitable injuries that happen throughout the course of a season. We have almost all of the pieces to win it all, and most of those pieces aren't going anywhere for a while.

Do you suppose his stint in the majors where after pitchers adjusted to Moncada, he looked completely over matched, made them think he would never be what had been projected? BTW i really hate the interest in Mitch Mooreland, not a fan.

We are still missing a big power bat in the middle of the line-up. Seriously, there is not much of a substitute available if the Sox want to keep under the luxury tax.
