The thought has been that the primary way to shred payroll for in season moves is to trade a starting pitcher. What about trading Chris Young? There is generally a sentiment that you will need at least 7 starting pitchers to get through the year. The $6.5 million shaved by trading Young could get that flexibility as well. You could find an outfielder to plug in for less.

Chris Young fills an important role, though-- fourth outfielder and RH part of a DH platoon. If you traded him, you'd need to fill that spot, and there's no one in the system who can really do so. Calling up Rusney Castillo would add too much money to the luxury tax calculations, and Bryce Brentz is no better than replacement level. You'll have a hard time finding a free agent who will be as good as Young for as cheap as Young, and even if you do, you're saving, what, a million or two max?

The only case for trading Chris Young is if someone needs a starter and will pay in prospects accordingly. He's a steal at $6.5 million.

The guy is obviously a fit in Fenway, and a lefty-masher with few peers. He was so effective against them last year that he posted the best OPS+ he's ever had. He and Moreland should be very effective if used properly. They're both on reasonable contracts and free agents next year. That provides a bit of flexibility for the Sox when it comes to Sam Travis - as others have pointed out.

Agree with the above. The hope is that Young forms a pretty strict platoon with Moreland, and when JBJ or Benintendi require an offday, Young's the guy you want filling in there (in LF) against a lefty. If anything, you'd ideally have an additional competent bench option for lefties (Rutledge and Brentz aren't that, with the latter being pretty unlikely to even make the roster), so Young is pretty important. Not to mention, if one of our outfielders goes down with an injury, he probably snags the lions share of the playing time (with some Holt mixed in) -- there's not much serviceable depth in the organization after him.

If you look at splits for the Red Sox projected roster, it is fairly easy to see that the Sox really need another hitter or three like Young, not to trade him away. Bradley, Moreland, Sandoval, and Benintendi each have their issues vs LHP (Benintendi admittedly in a SSS), Young can only take the spot of one of them in the lineup when the Sox face a left handed starter. I have no problem with Bradley and Benintendi getting lots of reps against LHP, but Moreland and Sandoval shouldn’t be, the Sox need to add at least 1 more guy who can hit lefties.

Josh Rutledge, BTW, has a career neutral split. If he's on the roster, it remains to be seen whether you'd even platoon him with Sandoval, the questions being whether Sandoval bounces back from the right side and how much, if any, of Rutledge's 2016 was for real. It was reported that the Sox thought so from a scouting perspective, but you can't see anything in either his batted ball or plate discipline numbers.

Hopefully Sam Travis becomes part of the solution for the Sox against LHP, he has excelled against lefties in his minor league career, and hopefully he will be MLB ready sooner rather than later in 2017. A lineup of Pedroia, Bogaerts, Betts, Hanley, Young, Leon, Travis, Sandoval, (Benintendi or Bradley) vs lefties looks pretty good. Sandoval, Benintendi and Bradley all struggle to some extent vs LHP, but Benintendi hit lefties in the minors, and didn’t really get a whole lot of opportunity against them in Boston last year, so I think he will be fine long term vs lefties. I think Travis will need some time in AAA to knock the rust off, and gain confidence in the knee, but hopefully, again, he'll MLB be ready sooner rather than later.

They're better off with Hanley at 1B and Young at DH against LHP. I don't want Young in the field much. And it'll be hard to bring Travis up unless there is a DL stint for Hanley or Young.
