Josh Tobias, a 2015 college senior 10th round pick? Potential utility guy? Hardly the high (any?) ceiling low minors kind of kid I was hoping for. Boy, Dombrowski really does hate prospects.

Josh Tobias? 24-year old high-A 2b?
I hope Phils took on full contract.
I am a DD defender, but this one confuses me.

Give up Buchholz as a salary dump, yet trade Anderson freakin Espinoza for Drew Pomeranz. Seems to make sense.

I know our main incentive to trade Buchholz was to get under the cap. Still, I thought we could do better than this.

The Red Sox have traded Clay Buchholz for 2nd baseman from the Phillies Josh Tobias.

If this was Clay's trade value, I totally don't get why we bothered to pick up his option.

Looks like an org guy for a straight salary dump. Anyone know different about Tobias? If that's the true return I would've rather dealt Pomeranz for something real to re-stock the farm a bit.
Does this mean Dombrowski moves on Encarnacion now? (I only half kid here, I could actually see that happening).

If this is all we got for Buchholz wasn't worth counting towards the luxury tax if it indeed was counted towards the luxury tax?
I don't see any value in trading for this guy. Unless we really needed that depth at Salem. ;-)

With most DD trades thus far you could argue that he overpaid or something like that, but you could always see why he made that move. It made some sense. This one is the first where I'm legit confused and it feels like they mailed it in to get it over with.

Congrats to DD for finally acquiring his first non-major league player in a trade while with the Red Sox.

Congrats to DD for finally acquiring his first non-major league player in a trade while with the Red Sox. And he appears to have gone out of his way to ensure that player will never make the majors.

I hope the Sox see or know something I'm not seeing. Definitely a Funke trade. There must be something beneath the surface that only an analyst could see.

If this was Clay's trade value, I totally don't get why we bothered to pick up his option. Tobias is not much, but he's something, and they clearly thought (and probably rightfully so) that they might be able to pry a better prospect for Buchholz. That said, if this was the best they could get for him at this point in time, I'd have waited a little longer and seen if a contender got a little more desperate. This return is not much more than a pure salary dump, and even if that's the market for Buchholz, I think they could have waited until closer to Spring Training to give up on their hopes of getting anything of value back for him.

Allows them to fit Ortiz in at mid season.

Looks like a Salary dump, Pure and simple. With the Sale trade the need for clay and his 13,000,000 salary evaporated. I guess, if he were a free agent, do you think he would actually get a one year 13 million dollar contract?

The only potential problem there is teams get their budgets in place and 13.5m is a lot of dough to fit in. If it turns out he's strictly a salary dump what's the real upside in waiting? You risk not being able to dump that salary vs maybe getting a marginal prospect. You dump the salary when you have the chance to dump it if the market value is low and you are determined to rod yourself of said player.

I know I'm in the minority, but I will miss Clay, he has always been one of my favorites.

Should have just waited for ST injuries and teams to go into panic mode. How often does this actually happen? It's nice in theory but it's not that real of an occurrence.
