The goal is obviously to reset the luxury tax so eating his contract wasn't possible. 1) This. It's really clear that the point was to get the money off the books. You could argue that the mistake was picking up the option in the first place, as it looks like they may have misjudged his trade value. But look at it this way - if Sale were in the fold before the deadline to pick up Buchholz's option, what're the odds they decide to just not pick it up? Probably pretty good right? In that case, getting literally anything in return for the other team taking the contract is better than what you'd have gotten in declining the option. 2) Straily's not a good comp for Buchholz at all. He's not even arb eligible until next offseason. They almost certainly overpaid, but he's got lots of team control left and costs nothing this year in terms of cash. The problem was timing. They didn't know what the CBA was going to be in the end and they didn't have Sale yet. The CBA was probably more harmful to the Red Sox than they might have thought it was going to be since the punishment is not only financial anymore.

That new Blue Jays red alternate jersey looks like what would happen if I took their regular jersey and then messed around with my monitor settings.
Seriously, why is the blue jay itself red? That doesn't make any sense at all.

One last thing on Luis Castillo - let's not confuse his being the Marins' top prospect with his being A top prospect. He's a nice prospect but he's probably not even a top 100 guy - he was just the best of an awful Marlins system. He's 24 and just reached AA last season. He struck out <7 per nine in the pitcher-friendly FSL. Yeah, it's a much better return than Tobias, but it's not like this is the second coming of the Shelby Miller deal.
MLBPipeline slipped him in at #8 in the not-yet-updated Reds list.

I'm pretty sure he's going to be top 100. I don't remember exact details but there were several positive BA comments on him.

That doesn't make any sense at all. You haven't seen the new mutant red bluejays flying around southern Canada and the northern US? The call is the same, that's how you can tell they are, in fact, bluejays, just red.

For all I know that's not even a joke. The line between satire and life seems thin. I have trouble telling, sometimes.

Jabari Blash is better than at least three players the Red Sox have on the 40-man. I would claim him in a heartbeat.

Klaw: Love it for the Reds. Top 100 guy in Castillo, decent RHR in Brice, lottery ticket in White (probably doesn’t work out, but a guy worth having in the system to try to develop). Makes no sense for the Marlins.

He should have all three remaining. Was picked in last year's Rule 5 (so wasn't on 40-man prior) and was DFA'ed then outrighted to AAA last May before being recalled later in the year, so I don't believe he's ever used an option.
For that reason alone, even if you think he's a little worse than Brentz, you might rather have Blash with options. Given the lack of OF depth in the minors (admittedly not quite a big deal, given the four OFs in Boston plus Holt), you'd think the Red Sox would have interest.

I would trade for Blash or claim him immediately then. The Sox fifth or sixth outfielder at the moment is Junior Lake (depending whether you view Holt as a outfielder or not). The Sox can't call up Castillo for luxury tax purposes. Brentz isn't even good depth. He should be the AAA DH at this point if he goes unclaimed.

A's signed De Aza to a minor league deal. Wish we had done that.

The cops couldn't even recognize the car he was driving anymore when they were on scene of the accident. Don't drink and drive.
