Oof “@usatodaymlb: Hal Steinbrenner says Yankees fans love Aroldis Chapman despite DV incident. ”Sooner or later we forget, right?“ t.co/iQxwzBSLkkSure, until the next time... Hopefully there won't be one. As for the Cards, the question I want answered is this: How did the information that Correa acquired through outright theft get used, who used it, and did they have any idea at all how it had come into their possession? Has it reached the point where the player evaluation priesthood goes and does whatever it wants and no one questions because no one knows enough to challenge? If so, that's not such a good thing. Piss-poor corporate controls. Magic elixir that everyone drinks down but no one bothers to read the label.

The only way to defend the Cardinals is if Correa did all his hacking at home on a personal computer. If he did it even once on a work computer, the Cardinals should have known about it and turned him in immediately. There is no excuse for ignorance and a lack of security today. It's not like baseball teams are mom and pop shops with no IT budget. If Correa hacked into someone's bank account and stole money on a work computer, that person would have sued the Cardinals and would have won if he could prove they were negligent, which they were.

MLB did find that the Cardinals were negligent, which is why they received the largest fine permitted under the CBA and the first discretionary stripping of draft picks in MLB history. But there's a significant difference in culpability between being negligent and actively aiding and abetting the offense, is the point.

Otani won't be playing in the WBC because of an ankle injury, taking away one of the best reasons to bother watching the tournament.

Completely off-topic but I just realized that Paul Goldschmidt stole 32 bases last year. 32?! Only caught stealing 5 times. Okay, moving on....

Haven't seen this reported yet. Giants signed Hwang a week ago to a minor league deal that becomes 1.5m if he makes the major league roster. He would have been a great depth piece with upside and RHH platoon for Sandoval. www.google.com/amp/www.mercurynews.com

The Pirates are putting Marte in CF for the 2017 season, with Polanco moving to LF and McCutchen moving to RF.
Maybe it's just me but wouldn't it make more sense to put Cutch in LF and let Polanco stay in right? Cutch doesnt have a strong arm and has diminishing speed. Seems like he would be the obvious choice for LF.

Left field at PNC is massive, so you want to put a premium on range and even arm there. If you wanted to be tactical about it, you'd flip him with Polanco at most away parks, but they with a guy like Cutch, they'll want him to get settled on a single new spot before shuffling him around multiple new positions.

Oof “@usatodaymlb: Hal Steinbrenner says Yankees fans love Aroldis Chapman despite DV incident. ”Sooner or later we forget, right?“ t.co/iQxwzBSLkkTo be fair Hal quickly corrected himself to forgive not forget. He misspoke.... normally, I wouldn't even care about this but seems like in today's world people report a story that goes viral and gets attention that's devoid of context or is incorrect ether completely or in part and then those things are what stick and become the majority of people's reality. And even if it's not the complete reality it shapes perceptions. I don't care what side you're on as far as things go; it comes from both of them and it's a huge problem in today's "media". Btw I wasn't saying you were doing this; chances are you didn't see the correction he made because it was barely reported whereas this was tweeted and retweeted like a Wild Fire on a windy day in a dry Forrest.

www.fangraphs.com/blogs/can-more-mlb-hitters-get-off-the-ground/Great article on revolutionizing swing mechanics by Travis Sawchik over at Fangraphs. One of the most telling things about this piece is how completely stubborn a lot of coaches are about accepting and implementing change. You wonder how many guys' careers could've been different if they hadn't been taught the idea of backspin and level swing paths ad nauseam.

It's easier said than done, but yea coaching can have a massive affect on a guy's career. I also hate how pitching coaches and teams won't let guys throw or teach a guy the splitter anymore. Imagine how many guys who never made it could have had careers had they thrown that pitch. Might be the most difficult pitch to hit.

I mean I'm sure he'll hit some clutch home runs, but he'll also likely strike out far more many times in key situations. He's been a sub-1 fWAR player three of the last four years, with little to no improvement, even potentially negative trends in K-rate and BB-rate. But if he's a 1 WAR guy, paying him $3.5 is fine given the current "cost per WAR" and he's easily cut if need be. Not much risk, highly unlikely there's a big reward

Mike Ilitch, the Tigers' owner, has passed away.
I've always liked the Tigers. I wish they could have got him a WS Title during the first half of this decade, when they were perennial ALCS contenders.

So I knew the Brewers got Josh Hader in the Carlos Gomez trade. But I had no idea whatsoever that Hader had originally been with the Orioles and the Astros got him for Bud Freaking Norris. That's probably not going to be a worse trade value-wise than Arrieta for Feldman because Hader is almost definitely not going to be Arrieta, but it is far, far less defensible. Weird as it seems now, thinking Feldman was going to provide value and that Arrieta was just not really that good was a reasonable thing to think in 2013. But "hey, let's sell high on this low-round draft pick lefty starter who added seven mph to his fastball after we signed him because we can't miss out on our chance to get BUD NORRIS" is a thing that GMs get fired for.

This was news to me, Moses Fleetwood Walker, #6 in this 1881 pic, was the first African American MLB player. His brother (#10) also played ML ball. Here's his Wiki story, interesting read.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses_Fleetwood_WalkerI wonder if they called him Mac.

www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/02/yankees-president-dellin-betances-arbitration-filing-had-no-bearings-in-reality.html?fv-home=true&post-id=85774Dellin Betances loses his arbitration hearing, and will earn 3M instead of 5M. Now, Yankees president Randy Levine is trashing Betances over his 5M requested salary. I don't see the sense in this at all. I agree that 5M was probably too much, but what could they possibly have to gain from saying this stuff to the media? “It’s like me saying, I’m not the president of the Yankees, I’m an astronaut. I’m not an astronaut and Dellin Betances is not a closer,” Levine adds. What??? The SSS he had as their closer should mean nothing. He was still 3rd among all relievers in war, 15+ k/9, FIP below 2. If they don't think he's worth 5M, fine. But I don't see how anyone could say he hasn't been one of the best relievers over he last 3 years, and It seems ridiculous to trash a player that valuable to their team.
