Chris,
Can you tell us what the Sox Prospects staff's plans are for Spring Training? When are you guys getting down there and are there specific players that you guys consider it a priority to get a look at more than others?

Spring Training is the only time of year I can tolerate living in Florida. Several stadiums are within driving range for me, so this is my Christmas!
As far as the Sox go, I'm excited to see how the back end of the rotation shakes out, as well as how Panda looks once he gets some in game action.

Early bets on BSOHL All-Stars? With so many young guys, and elite vets (like Price and Sale) it's a little harder.
We already have svelte Panda sightings, as well as comments on how "big" Benny is.
I'm venturing a guess that Joe Kelly will get some buzz.

Chris, Can you tell us what the Sox Prospects staff's plans are for Spring Training? When are you guys getting down there and are there specific players that you guys consider it a priority to get a look at more than others? Well, since you asked so nicely... I get in Wednesday night, 3/15, and I'm there through Sunday. Ian's itinerary is similar, as is, I think, Chaz's. Others trickle in the next couple days (not to imply they're any less important, by any means, just those are the ones I've been coordinating with). As for who we're looking at, nothing secret there. Top guys and new guys, and whoever else catches our eyes. We're generally less worried about guys who are heading to Portland or Pawtucket for obvious reasons, as the lower guys are harder to see during the year.

It beats the hell out of football season.

In the off-season thread, Chris said:
The likely opening day bullpen, even assuming health, includes Abad. He'd have to completely forget how to pitch in order to get cut. The marginal upgrade if he's pitching poorly from Abad to the likes of Robby Scott - and that's even assuming it's an upgrade for the sake of argument) - wouldn't be worth depleting depth.
Unless someone's hurt, you're looking at Kimbrel, Thornburg, Kelly, Ross, Barnes, Abad, Hembree.
If nobody is hurt (including Wright), that would assume either 13 pitchers (with Sale, Price, Pomeranz, Wright, Porcello, Rodriguez) or ERod starts the year in Pawtucket.
My guess, Kelly gets stretched and if he looks good, is a Pawtucket starter, if he doesn't look good as a starter, Barnes goes to Pawtucket because he has options.
The question is moot if Wright starts the season on the DL. I agree though that ABad is unlikely to be released, traded maybe, released no.

It beats the hell out of football season. Well....not this past football season. I'll take the Patriots season and Super Bowl victory any day. But normally I'd agree as I'm a Red Sox and baseball fan first and a Patriots/football fan second.

If all six starters are healthy, they're not going to need to stretch Kelly out. At the same time, they're not going to compromise depth early in the year either, so if they're all healthy, Rodriguez is probably the odd man out unless he looks 10x better than one of the other two in camp. The Sox aren't going to want to put themselves in the position of relying on starts from Owens or Johnson early in the year. Moving a starter to the bullpen would essentially remove that player from the SP depth. If it's not working out after a month or two with someone like Wright or Pomeranz and everyone's healthy, fine, move one of them to the bullpen. But of course, we're assuming health, and how often does that actually happen?

I would be quite surprised if Pomeranz, Rodriguez, and Wright all were both healthy and/or looked at least somewhat effective this spring. I have major concerns about Wright in particular. But if they all do look good to go, I would think Rodriguez would head to Pawtucket for what would likely be a pretty brief stint. Pretty confident at this point about Kelly being viewed as one of the top setup men in the bullpen.

I think I'd be most likely to keep Wright in the bullpen and either option Barnes or DFA Hembree in the unlikely event of all 13 arms being healthy. I have no problem with a four-lefty rotation and I'm also not worried about Wright in the bullpen, because both catchers are willing to handle him and he will stretch out the easiest. I think I've made my feelings on Kelly as a starter pretty clear over the last three years.

To think, you just took away a rant from you that I was looking forward to laughing at. He was giving you a layup to bash Kelly as a starter again. :-)

Yeah keeping Eduardo down for a few weeks or a month will help keep his innings down in AAA hopefully and would be a good idea anyways.
A uneffictive Stephen Wright is kind of scary to think about (not in a good way). Wright has to have everything perfect for him to pitch well it seems like to this point in his career (between the weather elements like rain and humidity taking away his effectiveness or his health).

Speaking more for myself, and as a football fan of sorts.....following a football season is like watching a good movie, whereas as following a baseball season is like reading a great book.

Only took a day but baseball has taken it's first arm of the year. Alex Reyes is getting TJ surgery. Don't like the Cardinals but it always sucks to lose talent like that

Also, folks should feel free to start other threads on discussion-worthy topics (e.g., back of the rotation). This one should just be for miscellany that's not really a "discussion" piece.

Jackie Bradley Jr. @jackiebradleyjr 1h1 hour ago
Something to ponder! Just saying...RT @haradwyer228: @jared_Carrabis Will @jackiebradleyjr be batting right handed?
The tweet is accompanied by either a pic of JBJ batting RH in a cage or a mirror. It should be noted that he bats left, throws right so, RH is the natural side.

Well that would be an interesting thing to see. To say the least. I assume it's nothing more than just having some fun, but has he ever been a switch hitter? Edit: Expanding on that last question, has there ever been an MLB player who started switch hitting after they already had success in the big leagues?
