Outstanding article from Matt Huegel about the early season successes and then the 2nd half struggles of Josh Ockimey last year. news.soxprospects.com/2017/03/ockimey-making-adjustments-after-second.html Now the 10th ranked prospect, a solid full year from him could help bolster the strength of the system. He's been in the system a few years now and seems to be making adjustments has he faces struggles. From his statements, it's sounds like he's reflecting on what went wrong and what and what he can do to improve. Also looks like he's doing things to take care of his body as well. Sounds like a likeable kid with good work ethic. Any staff see him this spring? Anything to update as far as scouting goes? I think he's got the work ethic to be a successful major leaguer. I hope his tools develop so he can achieve that dream. One of the few power prospects in the Sox system. Discuss your thoughts on Doc Ock here. Are you a believer? Will he breakout with a full year of success? Or do think his 2nd half was more like who he will be?

Read through that. The kid's a thinker, sees it as a chess game what with the shifts they started using against him and he's looking to adjust. Good stuff.

I love the way he talks about baseball. He's clearly a bright guy with a lot of personal insight. That's pretty rare at that age (or, really, any age). He's got a good approach to struggles, and an even better one to keeping in shape. Yoga and Pilates are underrated as strengthening exercises; they're also great for balance and flexibility. I think he takes another leap forward this year in Salem. The power may dip, but I like his chances to post a nice OPS on a much higher BA/OBP.

I have never got to watch him play but since he is a top 5 prospect now what's the ceiling on him? He seems to have good stats. Only 21 drafted in the 5th round and recently named a Carolina league All-Star. I was just wondering everyone's opinion on him. Does he have power? Should he be in Portland by the end of the season?

The consensus seems to be that he's a good hitter with plus raw power but his 1B-only profile makes it so that he'll need to continue to be a great hitter and turn that raw power into more game power in order to be a first division regular. Especially considering that he's not so great defensively at 1B either. The knock with him seems to be more with his player type than any specific issue with him and many 1B prospects dominate low minors and fizzle out in the high minors. Now you could have gotten that from the podcasts or scouting reports, so I suppose my take is that I think he's a fun prospect to follow. I'll of course dream on him reaching what I see as his ceiling of a starting first baseman with average defense. Given his second half struggles last year I would prefer to keep him in Salem for the full season. This would allow him to get a full year of success under his belt before making one of the biggest jumps in talent level from A+ to AA.

I see Ockimey as a guy who has a shot at being a three true outcomes DH in the majors if things work out. We'll see how he does in Portland toward the end of this season or next season.

For the past week or so, he has been having some pretty poor at bats. Either Out front or terribly late on most swings.
Might be thinking too much at he plate.

I just feel like we probably have better prospects then him if that's the case. Chavis should be 3rd or 4th the season he's having and being drafted 1st round. I guess the list always changes but Devers, Groome, Travis, Chavis are our top 4 prospects imo. Tell me how him and Chavis are both 21, same amount of at bats and Chavis has a better batting avg and 10 more homers yet Ockimey is rated higher.

I actually wouldn't mind him being promoted later this season. Salem is a tough environment for a lefty, and he's still hit well and has even cut his K% down fairly significantly (even if it is still pretty high). Him getting a month or so in Portland could actually be good for him going into next year IMO.
And even more impressively, this kid has brought his LD% from 18.2 to 30.6%, and his IFFB% is only 2.1%. Those are huge developments which will help his hit tool tremendously.

Keep in mind we update the rankings monthly, and while both players are in slumps entering the break, Ockimey's has been far worse - Chavis is at least still hitting for power. Chavis also has significant defensive questions. That said, he's my #4 right now. Ockimey has controlled the strike zone a bit better this season though, which contributed to his ranking higher on the 6/1 list. Also note that their season hit totals are essentially the same (Chavis has 7 more hits in 2 more at-bats), while Ockimey has walked way more (23 more walks). But yeah, Chavis's power is kind of forcing the issue. Also, you shouldn't consider Chavis being a first-round pick and then ignore that he wasn't good in 2015 and had his injury-riddled year last year. The farther away you get from a draft, the less pedigree matters.

Going through his numbers month-by-month, and his June slump was really weird. He actually had his best strikeout and walk numbers of the season that month - and, if batted ball numbers are to be believed, his best line drive% of any month as well. But nothing went out of the park and he had only a .286 BABIP (compared to .360 in July and over .400 in April and May).
He has 66 walks, and Mitchell Gunsolus is the only player in the system who has more than 40. So I guess one reason for a promotion would be if some of those walks are coming because he's been too selective or passive, and they want to challenge that approach against Double-A arms who are better at getting secondaries over the plate heading into the offseason.

One report I got was that he was indeed being too passive (and picking the wrong times to be aggressive), so that's an interesting theory.

If that theory is true( walks coming from being passive), could they be promoting him to force him to adjust despite maybe not being ready. I could see the team not wanting him to think being passive will get walks at higher levels. Could be a time where failure might not be a bad thing. However I still hope he can crush it moving up

My other theory (not necessarily mutually exclusive from the first one) is they want him in the AFL and would like him to see some Double-A pitching before getting there.

It's either the batter or the pitchers being too passive once you get to a certain point. The good news is if it's Ockimey who is the one being too passive, the k-rate should go down along with his walk rate.

So Ockimey responds to his promotion with 4 XBH in his first 5 games, including bombs in each of his first two home games. K then.
Of course, also 6 strikeouts, 3 of them on Sunday.

Do we put him in the conversation next year at 1st base with travis chavis, and moreland? I am assuming that hanley stays at DH.

I know there's the one report that they're going to start "teaching him first base," but until I see or read otherwise, I really think it's just a versatility thing and not something they're planning on having him do full-time. He just doesn't fit as a first baseman to me.

Swihart might be in that convo, though I don't think his bat plays at 1st unless you like the James Loney model.

I looked at Ockimey's numbers a few days ago and it looked like he had one of the dozen best seasons of anyone in high-A.
The other interesting item is BP's FRAA rating at 1B the last three years, per 150 G: -10, -4, 0. Reports are that he's working hard on his defense, and it seems to be paying off.

Dozen best seasons of anyone in High A... this year? How do you figure? He's been something like the fifth best hitter to play for Salem this year, never mind across the level. It's just three of them got promoted sooner and the fourth has been hurt.

Josh Tobias has 28 points of wRC+ on him, but that's not worth anywhere close to three yeas of age. Kemp's sample size is below the radar. So I should have said "most impressive" from a hitting prospect perspective. But now that I look again, I see that I was inconsistent with my (very seat-of-pants) age adjustment. Call it 21st. His 130 wRC+ ranked 13th among players 21 or younger, and he's passed one and tied one based on AA performance after promotion. There are five 20 year-olds with 109 to 117, and that's probably more impressive, ditto the three 22 year-olds better than 150. Not the actual order here, but the arguably better seasons at the plate ... Brendan Rodgers Rockies (A+) Michael Chavis Red Sox (A+) Austin Hays Orioles (A+) Kyle Tucker Astros (A+) Eloy Jimenez - - - DJ Peters Dodgers (A+) Victor Robles Nationals (A+) Ryan Mountcastle Orioles (A+) Chase Vallot Royals (A+) Cole Tucker Pirates (A+) Cornelius Randolph Phillies (A+) Josh Naylor Padres (A+) Trent Clark Brewers (A+) Willi Castro Indians (A+) Jodd Carter Indians (A+) Ke'Bryan Hayes Pirates (A+) Austin Riley Braves (A+) Brandon Lowe Rays (A+) Peter Alonso Mets (A+) Nick Solak Yankees (A+) Alex Jackson Braves (A+) (tie)
