I like that he's found someone he can train with, someone to push him. There have been some holes in his life. This may not fill any of them but it might be good to have a mentor.

Yeah but it’s also not true. Well yes, obviously. The point is that Sale thinks highly of Groome’s stuff. Every time Pedro Martinez is on television he calls that day's pitcher's stuff better than his. Like 2017-edition Jered Weaver will be going and Pedro will be on TV like "man I wish I could have made my changeup do that." Sale's gonna do his thing and pump up Groome's confidence, and it makes for a good quote, but it's not really a thing. I'm more interested in the part how Groome is getting a full offseason worth of professional conditioning.

I would venture to say that some holes will be filled when you have that kind of mentorship going on. I will never forget Schilling admitting that although Clemens was not a mentor he did challenge him to not waste his talent. This relationship could end up being instrumental in Groomes future. Good for Sale for taking on a bigger role than just his start every 5 days. This is a win win.

I was thinking how Groomed Jason Groome is after a winter of training with Chris Sale.

I came here to say exactly that. And I think Sale is the perfect guy for it, not because he’s so good, but because his competitiveness is what drove him to be so good. Groome seems like a kid who’ll really feed off of that. I think this past year was a hurdle, not a roadblock. I’m really looking forward to seeing both him and D Hernandez developing this year.

Is it fair to say this system absolutely needs Groome to have a big year?

Is it fair to say this system absolutely needs Groome to have a big year? Nah. There are several other things that could go right in the system. Chavis and Houck could be Top-50 prospects with big seasons, Mata potentially as well. Groome's got the highest upside of any of them, so obviously the ideal scenario is him putting things together. But there are a lot of paths where Groome stagnates and the system still looks better one year from now than it does today.

I also think that the premise of "the system needing" something is a bit weird to me, outside SP.com brass discussing it in the sense that WE need something to write about, of course . When does your system ever really "need" something? Groome is, to me, by far the highest-upside prospect in the system, so if you're looking for the system to have an elite prospect once again, his having a big year is the easiest way there. Unfortunately, the other easiest way there was Daniel Flores turning into the next elite catching prospect. But you could also get there with Houck showing starter's stuff and command, or maybe Mata's stuff ticking up a bit with another year of physical development (based on his Instagram, he got after it this offseason, btw).

I just read the Speier article in the Globe (http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2018/03/19/sox-prospect-jay-groome-impressive-spring-debut/MlqnXxrEpPE1Ts0BxLev9J/story.html), and already it seems Groome has added a little giddyup and has the CB in draft-time form. I know a few folks were down about his year last year, but he was only 17 at draft time. I put very little stock in one down year, particularly given the manner in which he responded. By most accounts he could’ve shown up in better shape last spring...and this year he didn’t make the same mistake. I’m looking forward to a big year from him. He could move very quickly, and he’s the one guy they have who figures to be a 2/3 but has genuine (legit) 1 upside. I’d love to see him take a leap forward with the CH.

I’m no scout, and it’s not the best possible view, but I had to go back and look at/compare the FB and CB deliveries. I really don’t see much of anything to differentiate them. In fact, his FB velo seems a little deceptive because his mechanics are really pretty fluid for a big guy. He’s definitely getting some drive and the ball comes out really loose with some ride. The CB delivery seems essentially indistinguishable...arm speed’s high and the thing’s coming out straight but it’s got big bite, lots of late bend. Damn, his stuff looks good right now.

I know he had some makeup questions at draft time, but from reading Speier's piece and considering the craziness surrounding his personal life, I am super impressed with his composure and maturity to recognize what he needed to do this offseason. Really hope it all pays off with a massive year for him.
The reports this spring are very encouraging. Mow'em down young man!

I think a lot of his “personal issues” were really his fathers issues. Oh yea and he was a high school kid. I do agree nice to see positive stories about him.

What I got out of this tweet was that his injury was 240 days ago from today... which would place it on March 24th, the day radiohix re-posted the tweets that said that Groome was hitting 96 and missing bats.
