If Chavis keeps this up, and Devers does as well, someone has to change position. The OF is full. I think it has to be 1B. Both appear to be much better hitters than Travis. I think he is the trade chip, not either Chavis or Devers. No decisions have to be made anytime soon. Until then, we should keep the depth.

Statistically, there are enough warning signs there to be cautious. As far as 1B goes, it's highly unlikely. Devers is the significantly better third baseman and Chavis is too short for 1B.

Chavis is supposedly most comfortable as a middle infielder, so he might fit best as Pedroia's eventual replacement. He could also serve as injury depth there too in another year or so...hopefully.

I wonder if Chavis, Groome, Ockimey, and Mata would be enough...better get on that, Dave.

I hope this doesn't come too quickly, as my hope is for Pedroia to play with the Sox for quite a while longer. There is no reason that his quality defense (while certain to slightly deteriorate), combined with his solid bat handling, can not hang for another 4-5 years. As such, I'm hoping Chavis can become a jack-of-all-trades type who can play some 2B, 3B, 1B, and LF. A Ben Zobrist type, if you will.

Michael Chavis is approaching that Keith Couch levels of legend in my heart. This isn't anything new, I've been a true believer since I read his MLB ceiling was David Wright and Wright is awesome, but it's nice seeing my faith being rewarded big time.

As often as I see his name in the trade discussions thread, I'm bumping Chavis.
He's hitting well in AA at just 21. If he finishes the year strong in AA he might very well start out in AAA next year at 22, and he'll probably get a call-up at some point later in the year. That's pretty age-advanced. Yeah, he's got no real position right now, but there are indications his bat will play in MLB. He hit a bunch of HR in a HR graveyard, and with 52 XBH in under 400 PA this year, including 24 HR and 26 2b, you've gotta like the results from his plus bat speed. He's OPSing .872 in AA after a relatively slow start. The XB power remains. He's not striking out too much, and his isoD has remained fairly stable.
I know people are a little wary of his past couple years, but I'm a believer after his success in AA. I don't want to trade him. He's got serious RH power that the MLB team has lacked. He's looking like a great Fenway HR threat. Maybe he's a DH/4thOF/3b/2b jack of all trades, but I like his bat and work ethic a lot. He'd have been drafted out of college as a jr this year...and he's more than holding his own in AA. That should say something.

A brief writeup from Longenhagen over at Fangraphs: Also I hesitate to analyze errors as a proxy for defensive value....but I think its worth noting the difference since he has moved up to AA and played defense more regularly. In High-A this season: 27 games started at 3B, 229.0 innings, 17 putouts, 47 assists, 11 errors, 7 double plays In Double-A this season: 19 games started at 3B, 155.0 innings, 17 putouts, 45 assists, 3 errors, 9 double plays I get that he's unlikely to ever be an above-average defender at 3B, the instincts just don't appear to be there at a position that is very instinctual......but so as long as he's not a complete liability, the bat is starting to track quite nicely. A question for me becomes whether it is worth it to increase his versatility by playing him in LF (or 2B?) at the potential cost of further 3B developmental time.

If Dombrowski deemed Moncada expendable over Devers in the deal for Moncada I would suppose it would be because Moncada wasn't much of a 3b, would be blocked at 2b, and they didn't see him in the outfield anytime soon.
I think Chavis is in a similar position, and I do think he winds up getting dealt at some point whether it's by 7/31 or sometime this winter or even next season.
However, I think the timing and the position possibilities could still work out for Chavis to be useful to the Red Sox.
I think 2019 is a realistic season in which Chavis is ready for the majors.
By then Pedroia could be injured or declining, which would open him to some time at 2b, where I remember reading he could be something along the lines of a Dan Uggla.
Or Devers might wind up needing to move to 1b/dh if his defense doesn't pan out so Chavis could be needed at 3b. I honestly don't think this will happen and of course Chavis can hardly be rated as better than Devers at 3b.
Another possibility is that if they're fortunate to see Price go and they have Porcello and Sale as free agents, the Sox could use JBJ as a chip for a pitcher if not Chavis, with the idea of Betts moving to CF, Benintendi to RF, with Chavis being a LF.
Or more simply, perhaps by 2019, and injury to Hanley means that his 2019 option doesn't kick in and the Sox can save $22 million on a DH slot without losing any power or production with Chavis ready to DH or be able to move around allowing others like Pedroia or Devers or one of the OF to have an occasional DH breather day.
There can be uses for him and I like his power bat. I think Chavis could be a 25 home run guy in the majors and even though his OBP hasn't been great I'm not convinced he won't be at least average in that category in the majors.
He had that 1st round pedigree and struggled when he got injured. He's healthy now, mashing, and improving. I think he's a keeper, but I don't think Dombrowski regards him that way.

This team needs power now and in the future. Chavis is a 21 yr old with 24 HRs so far. Power he has....something not to squander. I could see him as a sometimes 1B or DH. Hanley will not be around forever.

Given his development, and assuming he keeps raking in AA/Price's antics keep up, is it possible they package him/Groome + whoever else for say Sonny Gray this offseason? I have a feeling that Price is on his way out this offseason, and Gray would be a nice 2/3 type behind Sale. He's still under control for another 3 years after this season, and Devers has the 3rd base spot locked up. Figured I would get the conversation started

I am starting to get more and more excited about Chavis. That power is hard to ignore. I just hope he hits enough (.260 or so would be fine with me). A .260 average with 25-30 home runs would be good enough for DH, right? If the glove doesn't come around, of course.
But then, maybe now is the perfect sell high opportunity. Should be interesting.

Figured I would get the conversation started That would be an exceptionally risky deal for the Sox. Gray is a 2/3 coming off of a terrible year. He's the kind of pitcher who benefits a great deal from Oakland's foul territory/big park, even if he's GB-heavy. He's WAY more likely to be Pomeranz's RH equivalent than a 1a/2. Then you're talking about losing him in a few years and having no high-end talent left at all in the system. That means losing players in the Sale/JBJ/Betts/Bradley category as salaries escalate. I actually like Gray as a pitcher, but I don't like this deal.

I have been on record as saying that chavis is overrated on the prospects chart. Glad to say that I was a little harsh on my assessment. Still not sure he is a 4, but he is certainly much better right now than I projected. Glad to see that. It is possible that Dave uses him in a trade, but I think he is more likely to wait awhile and hang on to him. It is still only one year, but it is also the first time in the organization that he has been healthy. Good luck to Michael. The biggest stumbling block remains where you play him and whether his bat will overcome his shortcomings on the field.

The name of the game is controlling the salary structure on a long term basis. The answer seems to be, the yankees appear to be doing the same thing, is to sprinkle the roster with some high priced salaries surrounded by your farm system. Example, porcello contract is up in 2 years, Houck could be ready then and you have money freed up to sign a winter 2018 free agent.

Should the Red Sox promote Michael Chavis to AAA. I know it would be an extremely aggressive move if they did, but my thinking is that Chavis has made his adjustment to AA extremely quickly, and seems to have taken his game up a notch since the AA All Star Break. In his first 60 AA at bats prior to the All Star break he had a .797 OPS which is more than respectable making perhaps the biggest jump in competition in the minor leagues, however since the All Star break Chavis has been stellar posting a .959 OPS in 67 at bats, he’s hitting, hitting for power, and drawing walks.
Now for the extremely crazy part:
Player A: at Age 21 Salem – 135 ab - .341 / .413 / .563 / .976 Portland – 237 ab - .295 / .357 / .515 / .872
Player B: at Age 21 Salem – 223 ab - .318 / .388 / .641 / 1.029 Portland – 127 ab - .283 / .340 / .543 / .884
Which player is ready for MLB? I’d say Player A, but not necessarily due to the numbers, moreso because of the larger number of at bats coming at AA.
Player A (as most of you probably recognize) is Benintendi before he was called up last season, player B is Chavis right now. I’m not saying Chavis is ready to play in the big leagues this year, but I do think that it is at least possible he’s ready to play in the big leagues this year, he is a RH bat who has hit both LH and RH pitching this year. I’ll readily admit, that Chavis is not ready to play defense in the big leagues yet, but the Sox could use him at DH with Hanley now capble of playing 1B again.
With the success that Devers is having in Boston right now, I’d at least be willing to move Chavis up to AAA and see how he performs there, if he tears it up, why wouldn’t you give him a shot in Boston.

I think you can see from Chavis and benintendi's triple slash lines the difference - benintendi had a super advanced approach at the plate, high walk rates and an all-fields approach, while Chavis seems to still be developing a more mature approach. His walk rate is still relatively low, and by the sound of the recent scouting scratch is also a little pull heavy. Beyond all that, benintendi was always reported as having a plus hit tool and made a ton of contact, while Chavis doesn't fit that profile at all. Seems like he'll play out the year in Portland and, assuming AA pitchers don't figure him out, maybe start next year in Pawtucket. There shouldn't be any rush to get him to Boston - he needs to refine the approach, find a defensive home one way or another and he's actually pretty young to be doing what he's doing in AA right now, besides which id be pretty surprised if he could improve the big league team this year

I wouldn't bet on Chavis being called up this year even with news of him starting to learn first base. However if he keeps hitting and looks ok over there, Maybe he gets a Moncada-style look in September to see if he can produce more then Moreland. Unless Moreland bounces back between now and then

However just thinking about it for a second, this seems like weird timing if true with Ock's promotion. Unless it means learning first base in practice and playing there on Ock's days off

They should not and almost certainly will not promote Chavis. He's essentially been good in Double-A for two weeks. He was at .240/.275/.440 on July 15. There's no need to rush him. There's also the whole defense thing.
He also doesn't need to be added to the 40-man this offseason and it's not a situation like Moncada where he's probably going to be ready by mid next season, so adding him to the 40, starting his service time clock, etc. isn't a huge deal.
Keep in mind that Benintendi, Moncada, Betts, and even Devers were among the top couple of prospects in the game at the times we're comparing to here. Chavis is not, by any stretch. I figure he'll finish out the year in AA, go to the AFL, and then come in next year to compete for a spot in Pawtucket that he's by no means guaranteed. That said, I also wouldn't have thought Ockimey would get promoted to Salem, so who knows?
As for first base, to me that makes more sense as a versatility thing than as hoping he'll come up and take over the starting job in a month. But who knows?
