Probably a slightly small attempt to keep Eduardo's innings down this year by switching him with Wright. I don't mind this thinking throughout the year with Eduardo. Got to protect this young asset in every way they can.

Got to protect this young asset in every way they can. I think it was more they ultimately want Wright pitching behind Sale, because of the extreme different looks.

Yeah you might be right but people here have told me that different looks from pitchers game to game doesn't matter, so I don't know what to think anymore. Maybe it was a little of my thinking and your thinking.

The starting pitching for the Tigers seems pretty stout.

The starting pitching for the Tigers seems pretty stout. Yeah the Tigers have a really fair shot of exceeding the Indians or making a wildacrd. They are a really good team. At least the Sox should miss JD Martinez this series.

Purely speculation, but its possible Wright traveled ahead of the rest of the team since he was tabbed for a day game to start the series, and that's why they skipped Eddy. They actually could have pushed him to the 9th after the rainout, but it looks like they are giving Porcello an extra day instead. The rainout also lets them push the Pomeranz debut back to Tuesday.

Switching E-Rod and Wright may serve several purposes: 1- break up the two lefties to E-Rod's advantage (future starts, not this one) 2- give any advantage of following a knuckleballer to the kid

Hanley is also out with the flu which gives us this monstrosity:
Red Sox at DET: Holt DH, Pedroia 2B, Benintendi LF, Moreland 1B, Young RF, Bradley Jr. CF, Leon C, Sandoval 3B, Hernandez SS, Wright RHP

Yeah, that theory makes a lot of sense. Good call.

But I wouldn't bat him cleanup for Portland. He's still the 8th-best hitter even in that broken lineup.

Who would have thought the replacement for Big Papi was the Brock Star all along?

Brock Holt for Mark Melancon turned into the fairest trade in baseball history.

Young has much better numbers in the last two years in right field than in left or center. That might be sample size noise (he played only 20 innings there last year, nearly 300 in '15) but I'd put him out there over Holt at 70%.

I dont blame Hanley for skipping this game. I would too if I saw this lineup card when I got to the ball park!

I think it was more they ultimately want Wright pitching behind Sale, because of the extreme different looks. Yeah you might be right but people here have told me that different looks from pitchers game to game doesn't matter, so I don't know what to think anymore. Maybe it was a little of my thinking and your thinking. You're probably both right. The data for knuckleball pitchers apparently shows no "hangover," and from what I've seen there isn't any good evidence that pitching style sequencing has an effect. But there's no *negative* effect that I've seen, and in that sort of case, I could see CW ruling the decision-making process. Sale and Rodriguez do have the same FB/SL/CH repertoires from the left, and similar velocity. So they're probably breaking them up to "play it safe."

This is shaping up to be nice tv viewing....Sox on MLBN and the Masters. Guys are getting chewed up out there at Augusta. Must be impossible to play. I used to be about a 10 handicap, if I was playing a lot. But if you stuck me out on that course, on those tees, in those conditions, I wouldn't break 120.
