Good thing that Moreland wasn't dumped in the 6th inning

Frustrating. Nice effort by the guys to fight back. Sometimes it is just baseball. That's all the explanation needed.

Can't get away with walking the entire Tigers roster in one inning.
Onto the next one.

Tough loss but I think this will be a common theme in their losses this year.

I'm not a praying man, but if I were, I'd pray for a healthy return from Thornburg.

You're arguing based on outcomes, not the quality of the decision. and you have proof, of course, it would have worked. I wish i was you guys and could just blame Farrell, but the players were set up to do their jobs. They deserve the blame. Well, no, you're still missing the point. Whether it would have worked is unknowable - the point is that it was the wrong decision.

Seems like Dombro can't win if that is the case.

I hope Kelly gets non tendered after the season and gets sent to the minors when Thornburg comes back. Guy just isn't a good major league pitcher in any role. Starting, relieving. Doesn't matter. Too inconsistent to be anything worthwhile.

Well, no, you're still missing the point. Whether it would have worked is unknowable - the point is that it was the wrong decision. You have proof positive, during this game, that the move could backfire. I understand the point, and wanted Kimbrel. i also think it is a 162 game season and everyone had to play a role, and there are situations where decisions can be interchangeable. 1-25, is what it takes to win a division, pennant, championship.

I do think Farrell was trying to protect Kimbrel early in the season by not pitching him too much early in the season.
Joe Kelly, Hembree, and even Scott needs to be better. Or the Sox should just dump Kelly when they rightfully get the chance when Thornburg comes back.
Also, not having Matt Barnes in this game hurts. I think Farrell goes to him instead of Kelly if Barnes was around.

Yeah, it's tough for me to get behind "if only Matt Barnes was available!" as my post-mortem. He might be better than Kelly, but I don't know that he's any more likely to hold in that situation.

This is a time where managing to the save is just insanity. There's a huge gap between Kimbrel and their next best reliever, and Cabrera and Martinez were due up in the inning. It's hard for me to blame Farrell because every single manager in baseball would use the same orthodox bullpen alignment, but it's just nuts. If Miguel Cabrera is the tying run in the 8th inning of a one-run game, you need to have your best pitcher on him.

Is there ever a time that managing to the save isn't insane?

I understand not wanting to burn your closer out, but a loss is a loss is a loss.
1 - Who's to say the Sox will have a lead in any of the upcoming games vs Detroit? 2 - The bullpen is shorthanded. 3 - The bullpen should be getting pretty good reinforcements this season. 4 - Sandoval was set up to have the game winning HR.
Kimbrel should of gone for the 4 out save.
