Pedro Pavano pitching for Down East. Now, that's a trade I fondly remember:)

Interesting Portland first game of year 2-2 ball game they go to Buttrey not ysla, Callahan, Jerez, Cosart for set up. Maddox looked good closing. Stanky battled. He was hit hard but kept his composure. Tavarez is a special player - should be in AAA.

Last night Salem gives up 6 runs in the 9th and lost by a run. Tonight, they score 6 runs in the 9th for a walk off win. That's awesome minor league baseball.

Held his own in ST, with a nice OBP and a passel of steals. My guess is, he's not long for Portland.

They're on a schedule and more or less rotate. Buttrey coming in when he did is indicative that it was his turn to pitch and nothing more.

I hear ya, and I would normally agree, but this was Portland's first game and all the pitchers had at least 7 days off. All were rested and available. Additionally, I guess that they are trying to position each pitcher / role, i.e., set up, closer, long relief moving forward. Buttrey / Maddox had great spring training...., but maybe you are right, they Portland didn't really care if they won their home opener and just threw who was available? Could be!

Buttrey / Maddox had great spring training...., but maybe you are right, they Portland didn't really care if they won their home opener and just threw who was available? Could be! This would be the first time in the decade-plus I've worked for this site that the club cared about such things as winning the home opener or setting traditional bullpen roles in the minor leagues (exception being that sometimes there is a "closer," but 9 of 10 times that's a bad thing and the guy is a journeyman too old for the league or something). They don't really operate that way. Just go back year by year on our stats page and note how low player save totals always are. It's really never about "just throwing who was available." Before a game, there are usually a couple relievers who are scheduled to pitch, particularly in the low minors. In the first game of the season especially, there is no question they knew exactly who the first reliever coming in was going to be before the game started. The exception might be a playoff push, in which case the club might manage a little differently (but not as much as you'd think) in the name of making the playoffs. You'll note that in three games, all close, the Sea Dogs have used seven relievers once each. Tonight, I bet you we'll see Josh Smith and Buttrey regardless of the score because they're up in the rotation of bullpen arms. I'm not saying this was a good or bad thing for Buttrey or anyone else. It's a completely neutral thing.
