After dispatching Salem, Wilmington went on to take the Mills Cup in five games against Fayetteville. Couldn't be happier for Tyler Hill, who seemed to enjoy the postseason.

The two throw-ins in the Jake Peavy trade, Frankie Montas and J.B. Wendelken, have now hit 2.8 bWAR for the 2019 A's. That exceeds the 2.6 bWAR that Peavy amassed on his active deal at the time of the trade (the last 2.0 of which we traded for 2.0, so far, of Hembree). Of course, we also dealt away 7.2 WAR of Jose Iglesias (before he hit free agency).
Montas is on his way to a 4.0 / 30 GS bWAR season. It's hard to develop starting pitching, especially when you trade guys like that away.

Robbie Ross for Ranaudo brought us 1.0 WAR compared to -.8 WAR for the Rangers. Webster, De La Rosa, Flores for Miley was a net 2.7 WAR gain.
It's a two way street. How much gain do you figure we'll end up with on getting ERod for Miller ?
ADD:
So far, Eovaldi gave us 2.1 WAR. Beeks gave the Rays .3 WAR so far.

Yeah, and I was neutral, liked, and adored those trades, respectively, and I really disliked the Peavy trade because 6 years of Iglesias for two of Peavy was clearly at the very least fair, and if anything, we should have been getting the lottery tickers, not giving them up.
Same thing with Travis Shaw for Tyler Thornburg, where we were trading 5 years of a guy coming off two straight 2.5 WAR / 500 PA seasons (and who furthermore had upside that I correctly called at the time) for 3 years of a reliever, the riskiest position you can trade for, coming off a single 2.5 WAR season. It's already terrible, so why are we adding three players, including Dubon, instead of getting a couple back?
Both Cherington and DDo did this with some consistency. There was widespread agreement that the Kimbrel trade looked just fine without tossing in Logan Allen, too. Excluding Asauje's negative WAR for a bad team, that trade is now at 6.7 to 6.5, and that includes -0.1 for Javy Guerra, who made the show after 21.1 pro career IP and, after getting bombed his first outing, had two good ones against the Cubs.

We also picked up a World Series MVP for what looks like 0 career WAR.
Some trades work out, some don't. Nobody has a monopoly on good or bad trades.

Worked with the guy who is director of baseball operations at Wichita state while he was a coach for the Kettleers, he’s an unbelievably good guy so I’m sure that made the decision a little bit easier.

He was also a star there - finished second to Ben McDonald for National Player of the Year. Wedge is one of those guys who you wonder if he'd had a career if teams in the 1990s figured out how important OBP was. He wasn't ever going to be a batting average guy, but he hit .255/.358/.473 in almost 2000 Triple-A plate appearances. In 1994 he hit .286/.406/.565 for the PawSox while the MLB catchers were at .235/.295/.403.

Thanks for this great trip down memory lane with highlights. I didn't know Pedro lost his big fastball from this game.

Thanks for this great trip down memory lane with highlights. I didn't know Pedro lost his big fastball from this game. Wow, hadn't realized it's been 20 years tonight. I remember that game so well. That game was so much fun. It had great drama, great offense, and the great Pedro. What else could you want? That Indians lineup scored over 1000 runs. They were so loaded on offense. They had 3 table setters in Lofton, Vizquel, and Alomar, two absolute bombers in Manny and Thome, and a lot of productive hitters with Sandy Alomar, Richie Sexson, Harold Baines, David Justice, Travis Fryman, and Wil Cordero, and they even had a young Dave Roberts, and would trade away a highly touted Sean Casey. For an injured Pedro to come in and stop that lineup....that game truly was the beginning of a new era, one where the Red Sox could win crucial post-season games. Before that comeback which started in Game 3 with Ramon Martinez getting the win, the Sox had lost 18 of their previous 19 post-season games!

Former Lowell strikeout machine, Shaq Thompson, is having a monster breakout season for the Carolina Panthers. They line him up everywhere, outside LB, inside LB, corner, safety. Hell of a versatile football player.

Before that comeback which started in Game 3 with Ramon Martinez getting the win, the Sox had lost 18 of their previous 19 post-season games! I had forgotten how huge Troy O'Leary was in that game. What was funny about that game is that the Indians got stuck facing Nomar in the 1st and he homers (again), so now it's the 3rd inning and the Indians are tired of Nomar beating up on them, so they walk him intentionally to load the bases for O'Leary - and O'Leary hits a first pitch grand slam. Then in the 7th the score is tied 8-8 and Valentin is on 2nd with one out and Nomar is up - so they walk him again, and again on the first pitch O'Leary hits a HR, this one to put the Sox up 11-8. Then in the 9th, Nomar comes up to the plate with a runner on 2nd and 1b is open. The players in the dugout scream out "Walk him again!!!". Hargrove is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, so he elects to face Nomar, and Nomar whacks a double to score another run to make it 12-8 and 1b is open and so Troy O'Leary receives the intentional walk. Tim McCarver got off a great line when he said, "Mrs. O'Leary's cow didn't do THIS much damage!" Just a fun forgotten fact from Pedro's huge heroic night.
