I need him to pull this off. Getting over the yips is hard to do, I would love to see it happen.
I developed the yips coming back from tendinitis about a decade ago. Last start I ever made in high school was I believe 9 walks in 3 innings. It’s embarrassing. That’s the main emotion you feel. Frustration too. You’ve put all that time into playing baseball for years and years and then all of a sudden you can’t hit the ocean throwing from the boat. I became scared to throw BP.
So for him to be able to overcome this and get a look at the highest level is incredible. If he pulls this off he may be the first of his kind- has anybody who suffered from the yips ever made it back to the show? I know ankiel did as an OF

Did look back at Joe Cowley’s career. Two effective season, then 4 starts for the Phillies and... done. Incredible.

I'd say Mark Wohlers counts. He wasn't great after (and I'm not really sure he was beforehand) but he made it back.

Didn't Bard's "yips" turn out to be thoracic outlet syndrome? He was definitely a TOS guy, maybe I have the timeline confused though.
Also I'm pretty sure Jon Lester got over his yips, but his problem was throwing to first base only, truly one of the strangest things ever to happen in baseball.

First he lowered his release point (apparently unintentionally) in late 2011, which messed with his control. Then things spiraled down and then he never found his mechanics again, even after surgery. The list of comebacks from TOS isn't very long either. Would be great to see him buck the trend, he was always a very thoughtful pitcher.

I had a game in slow pitch softball a couple years ago when I was catching and I just stopped being able to throw back to the pitcher. I asked to be moved after the inning and now I’m afraid to ever catch again, which is fine because I play the outfield anyway. Sure, I was like 6 beers deep, but there was no excuse. Once I let it in my head it was game over. So weird, but it made me understand Lester’s plight. I’ll also never live it down; rightfully so.

My 2nd grader just got out of a pitching clinic with a Justin Haley. It was so freaking cool, he was awesome with the kids.

This is the guy in the Sale trade that hurt me the most. Get a 2018 championship beer stein to drown your sorrows in. So sorry. Not a boozer. Loved 2018 team, but idea was to build around the core and be contenders for years to come. That fell apart in a hurry and their is no one like Kopech on the horizon down on the farm.

That fell apart in a hurry and their is no one like Kopech on the horizon down on the farm. Still wouldn't give up the 2018 title (and by the way, without Sale the Sox don't win the 2017 division title either - and they could have gotten further although we'll never know for sure given that Sale got rocked most likely because the Astros blatantly cheated). I'm a big fan of Moncada and am believing more and more that Kopech winds up a top notch starter rather than a closer, but still, when the division was really there for the taking and the Sox really had their window to compete, they wouldn't have accomplished what they did without Sale. And I was hesitant about the deal. I didn't exactly jump up and down about the deal when it was made because I worried that it could backfire down the road. But say the Red Sox still have Kopech and Moncada, who knows if the Sox would be better than NY or TB? I probably wouldn't have made the trade if I were the GM, but I can't argue with the results. World Championships are rare and the 2018 Red Sox were the greatest Red Sox team we'll ever see and validated with a championship, but even though the Sox have four this century I well remember what it was like to wish they could even have one, so at the end of the day the goal is to win that Championship and Sale more than did his part. It's certainly better than what the Dodgers and Yankees have gone through this past decade, which was to win everything but the one thing that truly matters - a World Championship.

I'm pretty much just not remotely buying your general philosophy.

Kopech if he harnesses his control enough could be an ace, a Cy Young candidate, and certainly a candidate to lead the league in strikeouts. Thad Ward might be a mid-rotation starter if a lot breaks right. His stuff certainly isn't comparable to Kopech. Not many people can compare. I have a feeling I probably missed something here with the Ward reference. I remember we used to have a poster - can't remember who he was, but I think he's long gone, who used to insist that Kopech was going to be an ace as opposed to a closer. I thought he had a semi-reasonable chance to be and still do - of becoming an ace. It's better than the odds were back then when he couldn't throw enough strikes, but he still has a long way to go to get there. I just wouldn't be shocked at this point if he did get there even with the odds against it. He's got one helluva arm. Doesn't look like the surgery slowed it down much.

He didn't just insist Kopech was going to be an ace: he insisted that he was already an ace and that the Red Sox were foolish to have him in the minor leagues. And that, most incredibly, his high walk rates were caused not by an control issues but by minor league umpires not being able to see his pitches, and minor league hitters being scared to swing because they were too fast.
I think I'm comfortable saying given the distance and time to consider: that was the only time I've had to pump the breaks so hard on over-hyping a prospect that it actually colored my view of that prospect. Good times.

My mind kept coming up with "Red John" but that was the killer on the show "The Mentalist" about a decade back or so, so I knew it couldn't be that. It was "Deep John", but it probably should have been "Off the Deep End John". lol

Wasn’t serious about Ward Figured I missed something. All our hopes now go onto Luis Perales. Remember the day the Sox had all three of them in their system? Kopech, Espinoza, and Groome? Well technically they had just drafted Groome the night before (I was so excited about that! Still think he's their best shot at a top notch starter), but then the next day they dealt away Espinoza for Pomeranz and there went my dreams of Kopech, Espinoza, and Groome leading the Red Sox staff in the early 20s. I guess that fizzled faster than Paul Wilson, Jason Isringhausen, and Bill Pulsipher on the mid-90s Mets.
