I always here a lack of plane as a knock on shorter pitchers fastballs. I was almost exactly his height and frame. When I threw a fastball it was a 4-seam fastball. It isn't smart to try to throw the pitch down low. I threw a 4-seamer higher up and it had a lot of movement. Why can't Lakins throw a 4-seamer and get movement on it? To me movement at 90mph plays higher than 94-97mph with no movement.
I'm going to guess his problems in AA is control and command though.

Travis Lakins started the 2017 season in Salem . After his first 7 starts he was 5-0 with a 2.61era 38IP 32 hits 13BB 43K's 1.18whip. On May 11th he was promomoted to the Portland Sea Dogs where he pitched in 8games had a 0-4 record with a 6.23era 30.1IP 34hits 21BB 19K's 1.81whip. He was placed on the DL ON July 4th with a right forearm issue. Lakins if healthy could be a big contributor in 2018.

Lakins has been basically unhittable since his conversion to a one inning reliever. How much has his stuff ticked up in the shorter stints? Is he going to be good enough to be used as a high leverage late inning guy?

Fastball has ticked up a couple, apparently - he's 94-97 where he was 92-95 in the three-inning hybrid role to start the year. The curveball has always been good. In my opinion there is indeed high-leverage upside there. He's Rule 5 eligible after this year, so I can easily see him as either a September callup or a main piece in a trade, like Jamie Callahan last year.
EDIT: And just in case Lakins' recent run has flown under the radar, Addam603's use of "unhittable" isn't a much of an exaggeration here. As I noted in this morning's Cup of Coffee, he's now made nine appearances since transitioning to a one-inning relief role on 5/31, and he's given up exactly one hit in that time.

Is there a chance we see a promotion soon with Lankins real soon?
Out of all the prospects the Sox have, Lankins could be the one that helps the Sox in the second half the most along with Poyner imo.

More general bullpen and Buttrey discussion moved to its own thread.

I found a 2080 scouting report on Travis Lakins with looks from late July. Its a fairly promising take on Lakins and certainly not inconsistent with anything thats been reported here: Follow the link for detailed descriptions of his arsenal shown on the scout dates.
