He has looked good here in Portland & has been a pleasant surprise (at least to me). Could he get to AAA this year? Will he/should he be protected from the rule 5 draft this December? Would he get selected if not protected?

Mars can hit a little bit and has some speed (but with a SB success rate of 72%). He has kept his K rates always below 20% and his walk rates generally sit around 7-8%. His power is limited (career ISO ~ .100), and not expected to ever be a part of his game. All in all, I don't see a real need to protect him and I'd guess its unlikely, but not impossible, that he would be selected. The one thing he has working in his favor in terms of R5 selection, is that he has played all three OF positions: 113 games in RF, 81 in CF, and 41 in LF. Still, I wouldn't be too bent out of shape if we lost him. I do see him at least making the majors though (as an up-down org guy), whether it be with us or someone else.

I've always liked him as a 4th outfielder since I saw him in Lowell a few years ago.
