And as we all expected, when Pomeranz throws his cutter (more often) he gets results
Jen McCaffrey @jcmccaffrey 54m54 minutes ago Re: Pomeranz increased cutter usage, tossed 13 tonight. Last start Baseball Savant logged 12 but PitchFx wasn't working early so likely more
Jen McCaffrey @jcmccaffrey 54m54 minutes ago Replying to @jcmccaffrey Either way, it's apparent the increased cutter usage is helping him out in terms of diversifying his pitch mix
Tom CaronVerified account @tomcaron 41m41 minutes ago More Pomeranz threw 14 cutters-13% of his pitches. On season he has thrown cutters 4.1% of the year. 3rd pitch makes him a more complete pitcher
and his last two starts
Tim Britton @timbritton 32m32 minutes ago Pomeranz's Performance: 7IP, 7H, 1ER, 0BB, 8K, WP, 108-72-16. He's in line for the win. Last two starts: 19K, 1BB, 34 swinging strikes.

I've gotta believe his infrequent use early in the year was related to his arm troubles. He used it less after the trade last year and early this year, and it clearly makes him a much better pitcher, from a 5 to a 2 or even 1a. Let's hope his arm holds up and he keeps his cutter usage in the teens%.

I was so anti-Pomeranz, but if he is healthy and throwing that cutter with the results he's shown the last couple starts, that trade could turn into a real win.

It seems to me that Pomeranz without his cutter isn't much more than a reliever. Apparently he held back from throwing the cutter because of his injuries. Hopefully he can continue to use it in his arsenal without creating injury issues. If so, he can be an effective pitcher.
I hope this is something like the Pomeranz we see for the next 1.75 years. While I'm still firmly against the deal which brought him here, getting a productive 1.75 years out of him would be a major silver lining.
It could be one of those cases where you don't like the trade, but you do like the player you received in the deal. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

It's amazing what one pitch can do for a starter, when added to his arsenal. He's all-star Drew Pomeranz now.

Considering the fact that the Padres #1 prospect has yet to throw a pitch this year, it's got to be a trade win for Dombrowski. Three years from now, well, it could be a different story.
