Matt Chapman Recalled by A's to play 3B-Plouffe may be available Who would U offer Brentz or Jerez ? If that's all it took the A's could have them both. Plouffe should fetch more than a guy who's a AAAA outfielder and a lefty reliever who might not make it out of AAA. If I were Billy Beane, I'd look at Taylor, Buttrey, or Callahan. I'd probably zero in on Callahan.

I would trade Callahan for Plouffe.

I would trade Callahan for Plouffe. Plouffe is about to be dfaed why give up anything of value?

I would trade Callahan for Plouffe. Plouffe is about to be dfaed why give up anything of value? Because you don't think he'll clear waivers. Remember DFA is the step before waivers. It's not waivers itself.

I like Callahan and Buttrey. I would hope the Sox hang onto them. The rest, Maddox, Shepherd, Taylor, Martin, and even Workman are expendable at this point - I'd trade any one of those for Plouffe. They can help out Oakland's pen.

I would rather give up a Callahan or Buttrey if that's what it took for Plouffe, then have DD trade a bunch of better prospects for a better player at 3B. Sure I would start low, but I wouldn't let either of those two pitchers stop me from making a deal.

Forget Plouffe now. He was traded to the Rays for cash considerations/player to be named later.
Plouffe has been lousy but I think he would have been worth the roster spot, at least more so than Rutledge.
Honestly I would DFA Sandoval who serves absolutely no purpose on the roster. I would have played Plouffe for the time being and then got a better option like Todd Frazier or hope that Devers is ready. At least Plouffe could be a useful spare part at that point, at least an upgrade from Rutledge.
I don't know how much longer Dombrowski will let 3b without trying to improve it, at least incrementally. Is Peralta on the radar to get ABs until July 31st?
I figure by Aug 1st it's either Frazier or Devers at 3b. Lowrie, Freese, and maybe Moustakas (although I'd be scared of the cost) are other possibilities I suppose.

Sandoval is owed big money through 2019. If you're going to DFA him, you need to be DAMN sure he's going to be useless for the life of that contract.
Plouffe made sense to DFA because he was on a one-year deal.

Plouffe made sense to DFA because he was on a one-year deal. I don't know how this team could afford to keep Pablo for the rest of the season if he doesn't improve pretty quickly. That doesn't mean that he cannot possibly be useful at any point in the next couple years. I imagine it takes quite awhile for most players to come back from missing an entire season. I can't imagine that any team would take more than very minimal financial risk on him. The Red Sox cannot afford for him to take the 25-man roster spot much longer.

What do they need the spot for right now, if it's that pressing? Not trying to make a point, just wondering why you think it's so urgent. It's one thing if they acquire someone, but if he's a bench player and would be replaced by a different bench player, what's the difference, right?

We could really use another bench player before the starters drop dead of exhaustion. Pablo is so useless right now that he may as well be replaced by another relief pitcher. Edit: I just realized they have no one on the roster backing up SS.

Plouffe made sense to DFA because he was on a one-year deal. There's not a lot of evidence that he isn't virtually useless. He cannot field his position and that's not going to get better. He doesn't hit lefties. That hasn't improved one iota and isn't likely to. He was pretty good at making contact, even on pitches that weren't strikes. Now he's got a lot more swing and miss in his game. That doesn't bode well going forward. He's a DH who isn't that much of an asset against righties and he's totally useless against lefties. That's a pretty useless player. Sometimes you just need to cut your losses. This is one of those times. He's a waste of a precious roster spot.

Sandoval has about a month max to prove he can still play. He's been a train wreck. I was dead wrong about him so far.
At this point a good pinch runner, that can field has more value to this team. It's sad that a guy like Marrero has way more value to the team than Sandoval.

Pablo has 2 more yrs after this? Correct? Money against the cap has played a role in the mix for roster spots. Dave sounds like he is in the mode of rebuilding the farm system. What would they use for a trade to get someone? Owens, or another AAA pitcher? Maybe from the stockpile of relief pitchers they have? Where does this leave the sox? Do you try Matt D from AAA? Where does Devin M fit in on short term basis? Meaning just this year. If the person can play good d and hit 230, is that good enough? They did dump craig and Castillo, so the pattern is there to cut Pablo. I do not think devers is ready. Where is holt?

OK, so I hope you don't mind my picking one thing to respond to in this plethora of pinatas questions, but Craig and Castillo could be outrighted after clearing waivers. Sandoval cannot be outrighted because he has too much service time. Otherwise, yes, that would be the obvious move. As for the rest, I have to admit to having no idea what you're getting at.

To fill the 3rd base hole, the sox have some options. One, sign a free agent. Min money, but does it make things any better on the field? Keeps the salary cap goal in line. Two, fill from within. But who? Right now it appears that we are short at ss and 2nd for backup. XB will get worn down as the season goes on. And pedy seems to be hurt a lot. Three, you trade for someone. What do you give up? Dave has implied that he is trying to build the farm back up and seems very committed to keeping under the 189 salary cap number. Who would you include in a trade? How much money would you be willing to accept back in the trade in salary? Four, we rush devers up and take the chance that he is ready and able to handle the bigs. The thread here is covering the hole at third and using a free agent to start with. Then it expends a little . I hope that explains things better.

I guess where I was coming from with Pablo is that you are stuck with his salary for 2 more yrs. Take him off the 40 man roster and tell him to stay home. He is certainly not helping the team. I believe that is what the yanks did with AROD last year. I thought, I guess wrong that craig and Castillo were handled the same way. Take his money off the cap number for the last 2 yrs of the contract.

They're stuck paying Sandoval AND having his contract count against the luxury tax computation figure for the duration of his contract.

EDIT: Christ, The Red Sox third base situation has been so bad this year I'm not even sure whether or not I'm kidding.

Names have popped up on this thread, but are they in shape enough to help and if they were why would the other team have let them go.

At AAA we have Miller and Dominguez. Can either of them help at fenway? Would they be better than Pablo? Somewhere they have to find subs to rest pedy and xb, plus 3rd. Where is holt in this mix? Does Olt play infield anymore?

Does Olt play infield anymore? Miller isn't likely to be anybody who can seriously help. He's a career minor leaguer, and an older one at that. Dominguez is struggling in AAA and Olt is struggling in AA. Neither one are serious options although I had hoped Dominguez could at least field the position, something that Marrero already has covered. Brock Holt has been battling vertigo like symptoms. I wouldn't count on him this year. It's either hope Devers can make the jump in August or more likely Dombrowski has to make a trade (gasp at what he'd be willing to give up, especially considering that Dombrowski likes high end shopping, meaning somebody like a Chavis could go for a Moustakas if he's available.) Frazier will also be a strong possibility. I don't think Dombrowski would try anything under the radar. That's not his style.

Eduardo Nunez; Perfect fit for what is needed on the Red Sox. Add in Hunter Strickland (28yrs, 2017 Salary $555,000, Earliest Arb Eligible 2018, Earliest Free Agent 2022) & SF becomes a 1 stop shopping center for all the Red Sox needs at the trade deadline.
