I like that he's big, pitched in the SEC, throws mid-90s. Does he immediately become the fifth best prospect in the system?

KLaw didn't hate the pick:
"Boston's pick Tanner Houck has two above average pitches now and could probably move to a big league bullpen very quickly, but he's worked as a starter all three years at Mizzou and despite a rough delivery has always posted low walk rates."
Keith Law, ESPN Senior Writer

Anybody they had taken there was gonna have its quirks. Not many sure fire starters left.

Reds take Jeter Downs, brother of Red Sox minor leaguer Jerry Downs.

I suppose that when theoretically you are getting the 24th best player in the draft, if he becomes a productive major leaguer it has to be considered a win.

One elite pitch that he can't control. His fastball control and command are both very good.

I was hoping to call it an early evening after round 1, but looks like that won't be the case. Anyone have predictions or possibilities for round 2 selections?

Does anyone know if we were linked to Houck at all before the draft? I ask because I assume if we were on him then there is some greater likelihood that they've talked about bonus money and perhaps the Sox are in a position to save some money from the slot bonus. I read that the Sox were on him. it might have been Keith Law.

How are Sauer and Carlson still available? It's gotta be the bonus demands.

Hard enough even following the draft!

I saw a lot of folks wanting Canning. Finally seeing his size at 6'1 170 and readings his coach pushed him over 115 pitches in over 50% of his starts over the past two years, that seems like a lot of wear and tear on a young arm. Not an ideal SP workhorse frame. No surprised to see him go in round 2.

Had the Sox cap ready too. (My guess is they had a few, but still, not a bad sign that the Sox cap was one of them.
