Final day of the first half for Greenville and Salem. Division winners of first half make playoffs.
Greenville is 1/2 game behind Columbia. Salem is a 1/2 game ahead of Lynchburg and have a DH today. Great afternoon to follow these teams.

It would be impossible to feel as down about a former first round pick who has a 3.70 ERA and 9.93 K/9 rate as a 24-year old in Pawtucket as I feel about Henry Owens. A few days ago we were talking about Sean O'Sullivan, who has basically put together a long career of being good enough to pitch in Triple-A. I hope I'm wrong and there's still an adjustment or step forward to be made, but that's what I feel about Owens right now. He's good at doing the sorts of things that keep Triple-A hitters from being major league hitters, which makes him good at being a Triple-A pitcher.

Over/Under Henry walks: 6. Seem fair?
I'm feeling like an optimist today so I'm taking the Under.

Charleston has Nick Green going against Columbia, which is a nice little favor from our evil empire friends.

Owens with a 25-pick first inning, le sigh.
On the bright side, Nick Longhi with a two-run homer in the first. SLG by month: .288, .376, .558.

-Castillo went 2 for 3 in game 1 - now on a 15-game hitting streak.
-Charleston heping out, up 4-1 against Columbia in the 8th.
-Frederick is blowing out Lynchburg, so unless there is a major change in that game, Salem is in with a win in the nightcap.

Greenville wins the division. Salem does not. Salem can reasonably expect to lose some talent soon from the lineup, and they have already gotten most anyone they'll get from Greenville and unlikely any impact players from draft... may be a tough go at the playoffs. Greenville should have enough help from the draft/Groome etc to continue their run. /handicapping games that don't matter and clubs dont care about winning

Chavis 0/6 in the double header loss. Not clutch and lacks winners mentality, we need to trade him before other GMs notice.

Bobby Poyner has been money this season with an insane 8 K/BB this season in 33.1 innings. Someone to keep an eye on for sure. He has definitely progressed quickly through the system.

What does everyone think of Bobby Poyner? A solid bodied LHP with a relief profile putting up good numbers at A+ and AA so far this year. Already 24 years old and college teammates with Anderson and Johnson at Florida. 2015 14th round pick. Not in the current Top 60 here.

Can you imagine if the best player on the major league team closed out the season 0 for 17 and they missed the playoffs by one game? The takes would have incinerated the earth.

He snuck in there last season when he was dealing in Greenville, then Salem proved an apt test for him. Like you said, he's old. Early returns in Portland have been very good though. Could sneak into the back of the top 60 on 7/1.
