I wonder what JBJ would do hitting 2-3 in the lineup now.

Rutledge is killing them. Lots of LOB, not even close to decent contact.

This game is just one of the weird ones....Vazquez at third. Why not?!

Farell is in a bit of a pickle.

Nice to see another good young bullpen arm - Maddox looked good. Too bad Boyer couldn't get it done (JBJ's badly considered dive didn't help).
Can the top of the order catch fire? Mookie had a very un-Mookie like night.

Oh well - there is an echo in here (crickets too). Some games are just not meant to be won. Lots of hard contact...a few good things to take away. Let's do it again tomorrow....back to second place we go.

This offense continues to underperform.

This offense continues to underperform. I think it's less underperform and more that the offense just isn't that good. Mookie and Hanley are underperforming. Mookie will heat up sooner or later. Hanley isn't quite right this year and likely won't duplicate last year. Moreland, JBJ, Xander, Benintendi, and Pedroia are performing as expected. Vazquez isn't much of a hitter, but he's done fairly well to date. 3b is a black hole. And Chris Young represents the only hope off of the bench. What you see with this offense is what you get. 3b is the obvious spot in need of an upgrade. And the bench could use some upgrading, too. They obviously miss having that monster in the middle of the lineup in Ortiz and they got as good as seasons as they could have expected from Pedroia and Hanley.

I don't understand this, why did Farrell pulled Velazquez? I was with Remy on this. I would have pulled Velaz too. We brought in a lefty to face lefties. And we got decent innings from a bottom-tier starter.

It has to be Devers time. He's scorching hot, and Panda is hardly playing. Not even an option against LHP pitching anymore. I know, it seems rushed, but I almost feel like it's needed.

Pete Abraham tweeted late last night about roster moves being made. After being pulled for a catcher to take over at third, you have to think that Pablo is done. If that's true, then I'm honestly sad to see him go. I had a lot of hope for him this year. The work he put in over the offseason made me think that maybe he could turn this deal around.

If they don't feel that he's ready they won't rush him. We're still in contention without him and his proper development is much bigger than an extra win or two over the next couple of months.

Interesting stat of the day: Mitchy Two Bags (Moreland) is 11th in baseball in hard hit percentage of his balls in play: 44.1%.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that HanRam is underperforming, I think that things could be a lot worse. He's got a .750 OPS right now which is good for 8th among DH's. Even if you throw him in with a combined DH and 1B grouping, that OPS is 28th. Not great by any measure, especially when compared to Hanley in his prime, but still serviceable enough.

There are two legit black holes in the lineup, 3B and catcher. And when Pedroia is out 2B gets added to that list. I understand biding time (the team has played well), but soon enough you have to change the 3B situation.
Also Hanley is hurt, and now Moreland has a fractured toe. Why not 10 day DL one of them and call up Travis to make sure they get healthy?

Red Sox catchers are hitting .260/.302/.376 (74 wRC+) this year. That's not great, but it's still good enough for 21st in the majors, and they're getting good defense out of Vazquez and Leon. It's certainly nowhere near the black hole that 3B has been.

I wish this were definitively slow, but the jump from AAA to MLB is reported to be one of the most difficult in all of sports. We see this demonstrated when hitters who are raking in AAA are brought up and struggle. We can only imagine the exponential factor of difficulty going from AA to MLB. Doing so and being successful is so extremely rare as to be aberrant.

I think it's easier for college pitchers with advanced stuff to make the jump, and much harder for position players, even more so if they have only a few months at AA. Devers has already had to make adjustments, and he's making them. But as others have pointed out, that becomes a day-to-day and even at bat-to-at bat process as you move up. We only need to look back at Moncada for an idea of how big a step it is.

...We only need to look back at Moncada for an idea of how big a step it is. Moncada in AA: K% 30.9 with a .254 IsoP Devers in AA K% 18.9 with a .272 IsoP Rafa is much better equiped to succeed in the majors than Moncada was. Not that I'm advocating for an MLB promotion (DD is on record for saying that the Sox want him to be tested at AAA before) just stressing that the similarities between those two are very small.

Moncada wasn't really ready for the majors though. And he was basically promoted because the minor league season was over - it's not like having him in the majors was costing him at-bats against a more appropriate level of competition.
That said, Devers sure does seem ready for Triple-A.

The Devers-Chavis chain promotion almost feels more likely than not to happen this week after the Car. Lg. ASG, doesn't it?
(Note: zero inside info or anything on that)
